    The problem is the keyboard. The keyboard driver is prehistoric and it doesn't help if you have everything double but has only one keyboard. You have to jump through some hoops to get multiple keyboards to work.

    Well, there are waaaaaaaaay more people in non technical jobs, who all loooooove their Windoze simplicity, screensavers and viruses.

    According to IBM Marketing, there are about 30 million Linux desktops in the world, compared to about 600 million Windoze desktops. However, there are about 2 billion Linux embedded devices. Consequently, Linux systems outnumber Windows systems by a very wide margin.

    It all just depends on how you count things.

    Heh, a week ago, I loaded Mandrake Linux with a multiprocessing kernel onto a friend's P4 and the friggen hyperthreading processor promptly burned out - fortunately the machine was still under warranty.

    Shit happens, but Linux is probably more stressful on a processor than Windoze.

    Well, if price is your main concern, how about VIA?

    Their processors are tiny, use almost no power and only costs about $50.

    Those weekly figures don't mean squat. I think AMD has good processors and actually I'm using VIA miniITX machines lately, simply because they are so nice and small, but the main market still belongs to Intel.

    I don't get it. My miniITX VIA Nehemiah 1GHz with Mandrake 10.0 starts OpenOffice Writer in 8 seconds. A VIA 1GHz is about equivalent to a 500MHz Pentium.

    Nothing ever takes 15 seconds to load, unless there is something wrong, in which case it won't start at all.

    I do have 512MB RAM in this little machine, maybe that makes the difference?

    Doesn't make sense.

    On my VIA Nehemia 1GHz (which is about equivalent to a Pentium III at 500MHz) with Mandrake 10.0, MS Word on CxOffice starts up in 7 seconds and OpenOfice.org Writer starts up in 8 seconds.

    So, on a P4 at 1.8GHz, either word processor should start in about 3 seconds.

    A woman with a gun, or a man with a knife are avoided by criminals.

    A man with a gun, can still get in trouble, since the perps figure that a man probably won't shoot, but a woman will.

    As for a man with big knife - all perps know that its gonna hurt like hell, so they run off. A woman with a knife is not a threat, since the perps think that they are stronger than the woman.

    Plug 'n play is way better on Linux than on Windows. Witness a Knoppix disk. Plug 'n play is so good, that you don't even have to install anything, it figures everything out on the fly when it starts up.

    Try making a self booting CDROM with Windows...

    Get a Knoppix or LiveCD disc. You'll be amazed at how good Linux driver support is. Chances are that everything you got on your machine will just work, without you having to install anything manually.
