    It should be really easy to find a similar crappy program in WindowsXP. Just go clicketyclick through the Windows directory till your PC crashes, then you know - blech, POS...

    According to IBM's figures, there are 30 million Linux systems, of which 23 million are desktops and 7 million servers, plus more than a billion embedded devices.

    So in total, there are probably way more Linux than Windows machines out there.

    Hmm, I already posted one shell: exploit that causes a PC to crash. I'm sure there are others. This is very much a real problem.

    OK, try this one on WindowsME (I know, that's all I had around here, that isn't Linux):

    shell:windows\cleanmgr.exe

    That gives an instant blue screen.

    Windows has always had these half-assed programs that are actually part of something else and which should not be run on their own. So all you need to do is find one like that for WinXP...

    Mandrake.

    It is still the best desktop Linux.

    Set it up and show the user how to get to the Mandrake Forum, so they can read/post questions to the rest of the user base. They can post any dumb questions there and get informed answers within an hour or so.

    Hmm, you said it - Windows is primarily a games and home user platform. Always has been and always will be.

    Serious applications require some incarnation of Unix.

    According to IBM marketing, there are about 23 million Linux desktop systems out there and about 7 million servers, in addition, there are more than a billion (American billion) embedded devices.

    So, the question isn't when Linux will be ready for the desktop - the question is whether MS Windows will ever be ready for the desktop...

    The SA government has a policy to move to free software. Large tracts of gov departments already run Linux with OOo on the desktop.

    South Africa typically looks towards Europe for cues on which direction to head to and Europe is going the free software route in a big way.

    I don't expect the USA to change much, since MS is a local company.
