  1. Apparently So... on Netscape Founder Says Web Browsing Innovation Dead · · Score: 2, Insightful
Just look around. Web browsers themselves haven't changed much at all. Is this because they're perfect? No. People are comfortable with what's there already.

But it's apparent that the innovation is gone. Microsoft has said that they will no longer develop IE as a standalone browser (and IE hasn't really changed since IE4).

Konqueror is a grouping of tools similar to IE but they are focused more on standards compliance.

The only real innovation that needs to happen is movement towards complying with W3C standards. Everyone in the web development industry would like that novel innovation of not having to develop web sites that work in only a set of browsers. Or, even worse, gimping their web sites so that they render correctly in all web browsers.

I think Darl McBride has the wool over his eyes. He either doesn't have his head in the game or has his head up somewhere else. I'm pretty sure the dozen or so people he mentioned are probably groups or individuals that have signed the NDA. The NDA has been talked about enough for everyone to understand that it isn't exactly the best thing to enter into. All this talk about investigation. Where is this coming from? IBM is just going to let SCO run about and do what it wishes? I think not.

This is a very good, unbiased interview that asks the right questions. It's just that Darl McBride doesn't have the right answers.

These CDs are illegal... the RIAA hasn't gone as far as saying that but they've said that if you buy a CD and want to make a copy of it for use in your car that doing so is okay.

I hope it does go to the supreme court so we can get rid of these CDs that infringe on my rights.

  9. SCO vs. IBM vs. [INSERT YOUR NAME HERE] on FSF Statement on SCO vs. IBM · · Score: 2, Insightful
Truly enlightening statement. This should be handed out to everyone on the planet.

There is a general idea that some people have that Linux is THE operating system. The fact of the matter is that Linux is just the kernel. Everything else (for the most part) isn't Linux. People need to be educated on that fact.

My favorite line from the statement:

"... SCO's public statements are at best misleading and irresponsible."

Duh! But not everyone understands, so thanks for saying that.

Great article. This is an absolute "must read".

"In its complaint, SCO claims, in essence, that without its UNIX contracts, IBM was nothing, and without IBM, Linux was nothing. But both of these claims, like SCO's allegations, are dubious."

He worded that entirely too nicely.

  12. Great for Affiliate Programs on Amazon Hacks For Fun and Money · · Score: 2, Insightful
The one problem I've seen with Amazon's affiliate program is that while it covers customization and can display ads based on keywords, those ads aren't very attractive. The best way to target your customers (I've seen) is through very subtle, individual item links. It's not too hard to manage but it's another thing on the list of stuff to check every week (out of stock, discontinued, etc.).

This could easily solve that. Someone should be able to write a script that can display X number of items fitting these keywords and that listing can be totally customized and worked into your existing web pages quite well resulting in more sales for Amazon and a bigger referral check every quarter.

I praise Amazon for doing this.

  13. Incoming... on RIAA To Sue Hundreds Of File Swappers · · Score: 1
"I can't wait to see what happens when a congressman or senator's child is sued"

Or a judge, lawyer, multi-millionaire, etc. This should be very interesting but knowing the RIAA they are going to pick out people who can't afford to defend themselves. The RIAA will also probably include their terms for a settlement with a copy of the subpeona (like they did in the case of the four college students).

"We know this piracy is wrong and can't go on, but for God's sake, they won't work with us under any circumstances."

Someone else has noticed this too? Good, I'm not the only one. "The RIAA wants everyone else to change but won't think about changing themselves." (seen at http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=68800&cid=6290 633)

This is a great idea that KaZaA has been trying to implement for quite some time now. However, after seeing musicians challenge Apple to force selling of entire albums as opposed to just songs it's almost clear that the RIAA isn't willing to do away with its current business model to stop copyright violations. The RIAA wants everyone else to change but won't think about changing themselves.

  16. SCO vs. IBM vs. [INSERT YOUR NAME HERE] on Culture Clash: SCO, OpenLinux, Linus And The GPL · · Score: 2, Interesting
After reading the actual letter it seems like SCO is just trying to get its Linux customers to move over to UNIX. That was the biggest ball of sales and marketing (S&M as one fellow /.'er called it) I've ever seen in a letter to a customer.

Linus didn't have to say a whole lot. The suit doesn't involve him yet and he's not obligated to remove any code from the kernel because A) no one has asked him to and B) the pending lawsuit seems to be the way SCO wants to handle this. Linus does give his opinion of the lawsuit though and I think he would like it if SCO just said, "You know what, we're morons. Sorry about the mess." But, SCO is too deep into this now.

Just a reminder. I'm consolidating the "worthwhile" points of the lawsuit at the link in my sig. If anyone would like me to add something to that page or would like to contribute commentary on this subject please don't hesitate to contact me.

First off, I have to say that flyer was VERY good. Perhaps people should start putting them up all over the cities they live in. Eventually, people will take notice.

As for showing off the code I really hope someone identified where that code lies in the Linux kernel itself and makes that snippet known to others. This also could very easily make the case null and void because the IP has been shown to anyone and everyone.

As for the SCO made signs. I don't care if it was to be funny, taken to heart, or loved by all who attended. That is hands down, barnone the most unprofessional and childish display I've ever seen by a company. I guess I shouldn't expect much else out of SCO at this point.

Fortune seems to be in the chat rooms too much. I know I am one of the many people taking this SCO case VERY SERIOUSLY. Because it's not just about SCO and IBM. It's about, at least, the near future of Linux development, the stability of the GPL as a means of copyright, it's about Red Hat, SuSE, and every other Linux vendor and most important it's about the OSS community as a whole (fired upon by SCO in their legal filings).

SCO may be proving their ignorance but this case might get a judge equally (or even more) ignorant.

This is no light/laughing matter. These are serious allegations, that carry serious weight, and can cause serious damage. The future of the OSS community is currently in IBM's hands. Step up to the plate FSF, we need you now more than ever.

It became apparent that MS wanted to venture into this market a long time ago. They didn't actually start making significant movement until a few months ago when people started noticing searches for Google specific things on MSN promoted MSN search.

This is probably making headlines now because the MSNBot (More Info Here) has finally shown up across the Internet and not in its previous test capacity.

MSN has tried this before and failed. It seems Microsoft isn't going to let it happen again though. They seem to be putting a lot of time, money, and research into it.

I can attest that the bot itself has made significant improvements as of late because I no longer gets hung up in my dynamically generated pages.
