Ah, but Google does charge; just not "end users," per se.
Any company wanting to advertise on google has to pay for it (and handsomly in some cases, depending on how popular their search keywords are). Google's customer base isn't the people doing the searching - they need those people, but they aren't "customers." The customers are the ones putting ads on google's search pages.
The problem with free recorded music is that most people don't quite understand how much it costs to record a cd. Let's see...
$100 / hour for a good studio
10 hours / song
12 songs / cd (just for the sake of this argument, but it varies from 10 to 15.)
That's $12,000 in recording costs. Now lets get those songs mixed by a good mixer / producer. A notable one in my area charges $1,000. That is, per song. Add that to the recording costs and we're up to $24,000. That's $24,000 just in getting the music in a form that it can be put on a cd. Now we have to pay an artist for the cover art, etc, but if we're just doing your "recorded music should be free" plan, we'll distribute it over the internet.
Also, the months that the band is in the studio are months that we can't tour. Which means no money from shows.
So where exactly is that $24,000 coming from if the band isn't making money off of the music?
Is it something you can buy? Did you get it for free, without approval of the people selling it, and not as a gift? Then it's stealing.
Quite frankly, it's really appalling how all the pirates out there assume that what they do doesn't affect other people. I admit, I hate the RIAA and MPAA as much as any of you all, but I'm also a musician and I believe that it's blatant disrespect for what I do when people download songs.
2 words: Market Share.
If google ran adwords ads in their office suite that related to your document, they could make money and help you write your research paper, too!

What most people DON'T know is that the crusades were fought to retake constantinople from the Muslims, who invaded it and took it over for no reason.
As for the inquisition, well, anyone worth their salt should know that Catholic != Protestant, and out of the inquisition (Which really wasn't Christian at all - the Church at the time had been taken over by very corrupt leaders).
And what's this about Jews being war mongering? As far as I know, Jews have never started a war, unless you consider obeying their God war mongering (And they have good reason to obery him - I'm not sure you would want to go against the all powerful creator of the universe)
The entire United States isn't Christian - you can't blame the US's faults on us Jesus Freaks.
Now, as for today's USA - what have we done wrong? We took out a dictator who routinely murdered his own people!
Any international organization doesn't have the right to ask the US for something they invented.
This is gonna get modded either Troll or Flamebait. Think about what I'm saying before you mod.
I must be confused, because I've never seen anything that's actually stated it can be observed. The fossil record doesn't show anything. There are plenty of explanations for things like the grand canyon (You know, it took hundreds of millions of years to form. Look up "Mount Saint Hellens"). And, did you know (They won't teach you this in Public schools) that the DNA of a human is more closely related to that of a cockroach than to any primate?
I still would like to know how one can say that the Atheists are being discriminated against in our schools.
Evolution is a religion. It takes more faith to believe that the world evolved over millions of years than to believe in a Creator. It's simply easier to believe in evolution, because that allows you to do anything you want. With no God, there is no absolute truth. I'm absuletely sure of that.
Which is exactly why Creationism isn't allowed to be taught in public schools, if you wear a shirt criticizing abortion you're suspended, and why you can't pray over your lunch. It's also why evolution (Which according to the scientific method is really only a hypothesis) is taught as fact (Not even scientific law, which can be disproven).
Interestingly enough, in Europe peopole are now getting RFID chips implanted in them, and they say that soon they can implant them in your hand (Right now it's in your arm). It would be a genious technology, and I would definately accept it, if it weren't for the fact that I know what it means...
Oh, wow. I've been called alot of names on the internet before, but 'kid' isn't one of them. Just FYI, I've been playing online games with the "big kids" since I was 9 (Starting with Starsiege. Yeah, I know, I feel old. Which is pretty sad.) I hang out on [H], Gruntville.com, and others. I know what the internet is like. So please refrain from calling me a kid. Just because it's normal doesn't mean we should just accept it and let it happen.
Okay, your point makes sense:) Perhaps we should get the people who now upkeep DNS to add in support for those alternate character sets though instead of figuring out a way aorund it (Though in the mean time, a way around it is ok for me).
~_~ Where is the -500 troll on this? I hate it when I don't have mod points. This kind of attitude really isn't needed here. And to think we have people like this on/. What a shame.
Arrogance? We (America) invented the darn thing! We can do whatever we want with it!
Okay, that probably came out as troll/flamebait, but it always seemed funny to me how people will get mad at the inventors of something because they didn't put in a feature that the complaining person wanted. I think we should have a bunch of seperate internets connected togethor by an intercontinental WAN.
It probably helps to think of Windows in two different terms. 1) the Operating System 2) The environment. The OS probably changes very little from major release to major release. The environment, however, with all those background tasks, DLLs, pretty widgets and sounds are what seems to gobble up the majority of resources.
I must agree with you on that one:)
Thinking of Windows as an operating system is the same as thinking of Linux + BASH + XFree + KDE as an "operating system."
On the contrary, I think they've got some people who don't give a rat's patoot about hardware or kernel particulars, but just want a warm fuzzy computing experience and that is what they target. That and making sure there's always some incremental improvement which keeps you coming back every couple years and upgrading Windows or Office.
Exactly. As much as we hate microsoft, they are excellent at being a business. They know that people want this, and that's what they are giving them. It's genious, really.
And as for that comment about buying more RAM, I <3 my Fluxbox, thank you very much;)
Well, I have to say, it may be easy to praise the fall of your opponent, but it's just as easy to get ticked off about the fall of your candidate. I was praising Mr. Kerry's actions, not his defeat.
I have to agree with you on that. I am a conservative, and with the whole 2000 election thing, my opinion of mr. Gore dropped a LOT. Interestingly enough, my opinion of mr. Kerry has gone up, by alot. I still don't share any of his moral beliefs, but I now see that he has higher character than I originally thought.
Man, I hate to say it, but a 14 year old can do better system administration than you. That's right, I'm 14 and I run a DNS + web + SMB server on my home network (Stupid comcast yells at me if I make it a public server). Linux runs extremely better on my systems than Windows does, even 2000 (Professional, not server). And come on, insulting Tux on his birthday? Not cool man!
That would be my solution, and a rather simple one at that. I wonder if I should scrape the windows logo off of my keyboard and get it custom silk-screened...
It might be nice if the cloud had more pcitures in it. As it is, it's not much of a mosaic. According to Dictionary.com, a Mosaic is:
# A picture or decorative design made by setting small colored pieces, as of stone or tile, into a surface.
I don't think it's much of a mosaic, as it doesn't form a large picture. I just don't get it.

Well, www.microsoft.com validates cleanly, but the IE page doesn't.
o soft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx o soft.com

Naw, Vista was Microsoft's 'race to Tiger' project ;)
Haha, drop CmdrTaco in the dumpster... These type of posts make me laugh, if only for the fact that Taco built Slashdot.
