a few years ago, i had the joy of watching an Iowa metal band's album made by digital audio professionals. a ProTools rig that the dude controlled with (among other things)....a Kensington trackball! the thing had a bunch of buttons on it that you could program. he had routed them to perform special functions within ProTools. i was in love. still haven't gotten around to getting one for my modest home studio, tho...
I had a C-64 for YEARS, but some of my earliest games (late-1985) were those two. Man, my brother and I stayed home from school, playing sick, to play Jumpman all. day. long.
When I want to sit down and play a game for five minutes and stop, I turn on my Xbox and play some SSX or Sega Soccer Slam.
When I want a game that immerses me, I open my laptop and play NwN for hours and hours.
There are exceptions to this on Xbox, like Morrowind (also on PC) and the upcoming Fable; and vice versa on PC, with Flash games and the venerable Solitare. But I think for the most part, they offer different experiences, and can and will continue to co-exist...

seeing the look of glee on the face of someone who just put <b> tags around "Hello, World!" is pretty fun. it's how i got my start, and seven years later, i'm a Java web developer. joy.
I actually used Webmonkey back in the day when I started doing web design. I think they stil have good stuff on their site...
Will it disappear as well?
I was highly inspired by "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom". It led me to rethink the aim of the site I maintain and gave me enough pie-in-the-sky ideas to last me years!

I'm still playing Morrowind, and I'll probably be playing it until Oblivion comes out...
(hint: they're actually innovating)
I left college and became a Java developer, learning most of it on my own.
I just started taking college classes again this spring, and Java has replaced C++ as the "instructional" language.
Oh yeah, and I'm still a Java web developer at work. So for me, Java has never left. It's a great language, platform, solution. Fun times...
