  1. One reason for us old timers... on iTunes Sales 'Collapsing' · · Score: 1

People already purchased what they want. When iTunes first came out, I started snapping up stuff that I had on old vinyl and tapes, etc. that I never bothered to buy the CD for - mostly from albums where I only liked a single song (which seems to be their target market). I've spent a couple hundred dollars on iTunes - but now that I have everything I need (and not being a big fan of new music) I don't think I've spent a single dollar in 2006.

  2. Re:Wrong priorities on Advice For Programmers Right Out of School · · Score: 1

I think his priorities are exactly right. Some of the greatest inventions have come from a solution seeking a problem - those are usually inventions known as "ahead of their time".

LinkedIn. I use it to stay in touch with former colleagues, and it is very professional. No posting of music, videos and drunken parties on top of barely readable background - just listings of professional experience, education, professional interests, etc. A great networking tool.

  8. Typical Lego Post on How They Make LEGO Bricks · · Score: 1

What? No mention of how the current lego kits all tell you what to build (spaceships, castles, etc.) while in the "Good old days" all we had were buckets of bricks and our imagination?

  10. Re:We already have one on The Death of the "Cell Phone" · · Score: 1

In the UK, maybe, but that's not common usage in the USA. Personally, I have no problem keeping the "Cell phone" moniker - after all, we still "dial" phones even though rotary phones have long since vanished and "type" letters even though we no longer use typewriters (and come to think of it, "Type" probably predates typewriters and takes its name from old printing presses)

  11. Lucky to have seen one of them.... on Top Ten Geek Girls · · Score: 1

Grace Hopper recieived an honorary degree and spoke at my college graduation (Syracuse U. '86) - truly an amazing person. But, the whole "She invented the computer bug" story is part myth - the moth was discoved in the computer, true, and they called it the "First actual omputer bug" but they said that as a joke - the expression of calling a defect a "Bug" was in use prior to that.

  13. One sided argument on An Inconvenient Truth · · Score: 1, Insightful
Al Gore paints a compeling picture (I saw the film in the theatres) but still is only telling one side of the story. All through the movie, I kept telling myself "yes, but..." Although a work of fiction, in "State of Fear" Michael Chriteon paints an equally compelling picture AGAINST global warming using real statistics (yes, parts of ice shelf are melting, but other parts are growing, increasing temparture data is due to measurments taken around growing cities with their heat islands and is not a global phenomenon, etc.)

I don't believe the argument as to weather global warming is real or not is truely over.

That depends on your interpretation - you can have an official govermnent church (or religion) and still not prohibit someone from qualifying from office if they don't subscribe - just like making English the official language will not prevent someone from speaking Spanish.

I don't see too many Jews and Muslims decorating trees - Christmas is a Christian holiday, period. Some Christians may not view it as such, but the rest of the world (Except perhaps atheists) does.

  19. Re:WTF is this intolerant bullshit? on Scott Adams Suggests Bill Gates For President · · Score: 1, Interesting

That's a common misconception. The US Consitution does NOT specify that there should be a separation of church and state - various laws and court decisions in the past have upheld that philosophy, however. After all, Christmas is a national holiday, and our currency says "In God We Trust" - hardly a separation of church and state. True, there is constitutional protection to practice whatever relgion you choose - but that's as far as it goes.

Far be it from me to question the wisdom of your 5 year old daughter, but it's not "dumb" - it's brilliant. Thats the one thing I miss about VHS in the DVD age - having a way to reliably save your place, without navigating through chapter menus and trying to remember which chapter you last watched from the little thumbnails.

  22. Virtual Blockbuster on Variety Declares VHS Dead · · Score: 1

In my town, all the Blockbuster videos went bankrupt, and the nearest independant video store is miles away. So, I have a alternative - popping down the local used CD/music store when I want to "Rent" a video, buy a used VHS tape for $1 (Cheaper then renting when Blockbuster was still around!) and if I don't want to keep it, just toss it out when I'm done watching it. Sure there is Netflix, but sometimes you just don't want to wait a couple days. Oh and recording? Haven't done that in years.

  25. Last version of Windows on Windows Vista Released To Manufacturing · · Score: 4, Interesting

With each release Windows becomes more bloated and bug ridden, and it takes more time for a release. For the avearage consumer, computer OS's have reached maturity - there is really very little motivation for the average user to upgrade from XP to Vista (unlike going from DOS to Windows 3.1, or Windows 3.1 to Win 95 etc. which were huge changes). How much longer can this continue? Is anyone else convinced that this will be the last version of Windows as we know it?
