In the past I've worked for an employer whose philosophy was to determine the number of people needed to do a job, then subtract one. That way, everyone was forced to work just a little harder. About once a month or so, the least-performing member of the group was summarily fired and replaced with a fresh body.
Under those conditions, short of finding a new job, there is no way to prevent working > 40 hours a week.
What has driven Americans out of computer science? The only qualified candidates we can find here are from India or China. A few from Eastern Europe. Plenty of women available, but no US citizens.
For those who still insist that things are better off today than in years past - when I graduated college in 1986 recent grads were getting offers between 35-45K/yr (Petro engineers were starting in the 50s). That is in 1986 - when a movie cost $4.50, a new car 5 grand, and you could rent a decent apartment for $300/month. Never mind adjusting for inflation - salaries have not gone up at all even in raw numbers.
You are an intern? Then your pay should be zero. Funny how the way to get around minimum wage law in the US is to just call someone an "Intern" then you don't have to pay them squat!
I think people are just too used to the Star Trek Films, where the crew was composed of people in their 60s. Remember too, Kirk was supposedly the youngest Captain in Starfleet History
We have "shared" pagers where I worked - everybody trades off a week on call, and we just pass the group pager around. Makes it easier for people calling for support to only need a single number. And, several pagers are tied to that single number so Dev, Test, etc. all get called at once.
Seriously though its too bad there won't be any competition - Best Buy is the WORST, in terms of high-pressure pitches for extended warrentys, lack of sales help, lack of post-sales support (Just try buying a major appliance from them - and having it installed) and rebate scams.
I haven't seen Dr. Dobbs on the shelf in probably over a year - and that includes the bookstores in Redmond.
*cough* Z2K9 bug *cough*
What are they going to do? Get hired back as contracators for twice the salary! Corporate America's version of cost savings.
I picked a baaad month for my Microsoft Contract to be ending.....
Law School.

Actually, an uncircumcised Jew WOULD be likely to eat a ham sandwich, since they are probably not religious.
Or Deep Space 9 with spaceships. Oh wait....
I have a feeling you are participating weather you want to or not. Have you checked your 401 (K) lately?
After all - Bill Gates doesn't have a degree.
I work in Microsoft support hell, you insensitive clod!

For a Legion of Super-Heroes movie - my favorite childhood comic (circa early 1970s). Imagine Jack Black as Bouncing Boy....
mod parent up as funny!
Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.

My Mac boots in about 4 seconds WITHOUT any outside software
Yep - but I was 16 at the time, and really liked it - just to see the first new Star Trek of any kind since I was a little kid
Bah, the first Star Trek movie was released Christmastime, and that was good enough back then!

Everywhere. At least under the current administration.
