Recently, I had to develop a web interface to a firewall (based off smoothwall). I decided to split the interface and implementation so I implemented the interface in C and used libtemplate for the html/js stuff.

An example of this implementation is the web interface for my (crappy, mostly not working, hard to compile) cctv program at http://devsec.sourceforge.net/

In the source tarball the web interface is in the "devsec/web_interface" directory.

The reason I did this was to allow the web developers to create different interfaces without being able to screw with the backend.

    Maybe someone can answer this:

Everytime I rip a dvd with subtitles they appear white reguardless of the colour of the actual subtitles (in a standalone dvd player). This is because mplayer/mencoder changes only the luminance channel (so only brightness changes). However, the other day I ripped a dvd. The resulting avi had yellow subtitles. I have been unable to reproduce this, even with the same dvd.

    Weird.

Automatic cars will eventually become mandatory. The difference the politicians or rich will see is that they do not have to pay someone to drive for them.

    Really?

TinyX: http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~jch/software/kdrive.htm l is designed to run in embedded systems. In fact where I worked previously, we developed embedded Linux based systems for video on demand applications that used TinyX (kdrive) and Mozilla (0.8). The systems were designed for 16MB flash drives and run on 200MHz systems. The systems were not slow. In fact, they could do MPEG2 decompression full resolution.

X is not difficult to use. It may require more than a beginner to configure it, but how is it difficult to use? The Gnome / KDE desktop may be difficult to use, XFCE may be difficult to use, TWM may be difficult to use... But an end user "uses" X as much as a Windows end user "uses" the Windows GDI.

It isn't illegal if you are not a convicted monopoly. But a company using its dominance in a market to squash competition is considered anticompetitive and a violation of antitrust laws (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antitrust).

If Microsoft want to get into the antivirus/antimalware market, they are free to develop (or purchase) a product, market it and sell it. They just cannot bundle it with Windows as this would be seen as an attempt to squash the existing companies (who compete on product price, quality, etc) out of the market.
