I went to uni with a guy that had lost his left arm below the elbow. For a laugh we went into a Mac store as he was "looking for a new computer that didn't have windows".
All was going well until he asked the sales rep how to display the context menu. It was very funny seeing the sales rep tripping over his words when he was explaining that you hold down the apple (or whatever) key with your left hand and click the mouse button with your right hand. Another sales rep tactfully came up and offered to sell a two button mouse for $80.
He now uses a PC with a trackball.
PS. Although he only has one hand, he can type at about 70-80 wpm and let me just say "damn it is impressive."
In the world of "trusted computing" where the big companies who own all the media do not trust you to use your computer the way they want you to, all the data that is stored on your computer would need to be "signed" by the appropreate authority. The audio/video files would be signed by the "**AA authority"[1]. The executable (programs) files would be signed by the "Software Authentication Authority"[2].
If you attempt to use some software that is not signed, the code in your BIOS will erase that program. If you attempt to read some data that is not signed, the code in you BIOS will erase that data.

Back in 2001 I was porting rdesktop to nano-x for my company and I got two of the hex values around the wrong way. Running this program on any version of Windows up to 2000 with terminal services running would cause a BSOD. (I still have the code if anyone wants it) When the viruses started hitting my gateway at home I decided to write a script that would listen on port 80 and if it detected a virus it would ping the host, execute this program and then ping the host again.
I took about 8 servers down in the first day. Just doing my bit to prevent the spread.
"API support == source compatibility, emulation == binary"
Ok then, what about lesstif. Is it an implementation of the Motif API that allows unmodified binaries to execute without the need for Motif. Is it an API implementation, or is it emulating Motif?
Java. Is the open source Java virtual machines implementations of the Java API, or are they emulating Java?
You do not need to produce quality when you have created yourself a monopoly. The future for EA will be crappy sports titles for the small price of $99.99
Ah, but with patents I can take your existing product (license), extend it and patent my extension. To build on top of others work and let others build on top of mine. (Sounds a bit like the GPL*)
So I buy a license for your "invention" to be used in my "invention". I then sell my "invention" to others to use.
*The fundamental difference with patents is that I am free to charge whatever I want for my extension and no body is allowed to entend your product in the same way that I have.
" the crippling key layout that forces the left wrist into a grossly unnatural position"
When my hands are on the keyboard they are in the same position as if I sat them on the table in front of me. All those people who "suffer" from RSI and whatever are simply do not know how to type whilst their hands are relaxed.
Against popular opinion, the way I type is that I have a very flat keyboard (about 1/2 the thichness of a standard keyboard) and it is slightly angled. The "balls" of my palm rest on my table in front of my keyboard and my arms are horizontal. I work on the computer for about 10 to 15 hours per day with no pain at all. Those people who hold their hands off the table are just increasing the fatigue in their forarms and wrists.
Maybe I should patent my method of typing and make a million.
PS. My spelling mistakes are not a result of my typing method but rather a result of my spelling sucks.
... That was the fscking funniest thing I have ever seen.
The scary thing is that there are ads of the same quality on late night television that are flogging off refurbished PC's with "Pentium 2 power" for only $599. And they even include Windows 95 and a modem. (So you too can be part of a bot net).
I recently picked up 5 Pentium 2 computers headed for the dump. I am thinking on upgrading my Pentium 166 gateway and servers. If anyone wants one I'll sell it for only $598.
I'm sure most companies would like to be the next disney. Make millions on public domain stuff, then use those millions to stop your stuff from entering the public domain so you can make more millions. Sounds good to me.
May I ask why he deserves to have this job. What he deserves it to be put in jail. Should a rapist deserve to work as a Gynecologist? A murderer as a doctor? An bank robber as a financial advisor? And as was pointed out, a bugular as a lock smith. I think not.
Does anyone else think that the Mac mini looks like a plastic lunch box?

Let me explain. This is a worst case senario.

XP has been patched. Not sure about the rest but MS does know about it.

I guess I will have to open a bank account and stop carrying my money around in a guitar case.
But seriously. What are you to do if you don't like banks.
Mod this up. I've just attached "type R" stickers to my Nokia and it can now last 3 weeks without needing to be charged.
I think I will try to stick the "type R" stickers to my shoes. I off to the Olympics.

Donkey and a dragon. Sound's like a bit of Shrek porn. You know the one where Donkey is giving the dragon a bit *wink wink*
Maybe they should have used some protection.
Exactly what I thought.

Actually I was talking about the "idea" behind patents in general and not specifically software patents.
The patent system was created to allow inventors due compensation for releasing their invention for use by the public.
But I do agree that my analogy with the GPL was a bit misleading. My appologies.

So is it or isn't it?

Some may use your argument to also prove(sp?) that men can't play music because there has only been men in the Rolling Stones.

not quite, the crap floats through to the top of the corporate world THEN through the political.
Governments are much worse at managing money.
I thought I could hear "dot dot dot dash dash dash dot dot dot" coming from my liver on new years eve.
