Competition in the private space market, this can only be good. Will prices go down more than ever, now? And also consider the X-prize. It's going to be a very interesting near future.

There's another Mercury probe too, BepiColombo. And I'm surprised we haven't heard more about the Japanese asteroid sample return mission in the mainstream media. It's more interesting than that.

  4. Re:Transparency. on NASA Finds Critical Assembly Fault in Shuttle · · Score: 1
Before the Shuttle, there were just relatively small, disposable capsules for two-three crewmen.

Then all of a sudden they developed a giant spaceship, that could carry seven astronauts and big pieces of hardware in a huge cargobay. This vehicle could land like a glider, and could be reused many many times. This is, in my opinion a huge step up. It's mankind's first spaceship of this kind. I think they did a bloody good job.

  5. not a planet on Is {pluto|sedna} A Planet? · · Score: 1

Haven't read the article, but regarding these two quotes... it seems like he wants to see all the KBO's and the asteroids as planets as well, after all they aren't any less planets simply because they're too small. Right? I mean we have planets and asteroids and kuiper objects, would it be wrong to at least try to classify them differently, even though the lines between are blurred?
And what about the analogy with people? I can't see how that is applicable here.

Blah-blah... What's wrong with donating to science and technology? Someone donates money to SpaceShipOne and a SETI project and all of a sudden it's an uproar where people are mad about nothing, saying "the money could feed the hungry and give shelter for the homeless etc., and if you excuse me, I'm going out to buy a new Pentium 4". And all the space exploration is a waste, too, right? But who is complaining about the global annual military spending? Must be hundreds of billions of dollars, only so that we can beat the hell out of each other. THAT is a waste, of money, resources, time and human lives. If we could become intelligent enough to work together in peace, then we *could* feed the hungry and make sure noone has to be homeless and that everyone can get a proper education and clean water, etc. I fail to see how donating money to science is evil.

Because NASA will probably be busy developing their own Crew Exploration Vehicle. I think that a partnership between ESA and Russia could work out well in this case. It will help the russians build a new spaceship, and it might help speed up ESA's Aurora programme.

Our spaceprogram is certainly modest compared to yours, but ESA is working hard towards some great goals in the future. Check out the ESA homepage for info on the different space science projects, such as Planck, Rosetta, Venus Express... and add to that the bold new program Aurora, which aims to put men on the moon as well as Mars. I certainly hope it will happen some day. And I also hope that ESA's budget will be greatly increased.
