Isn't the medium, however, solvent for a matrix in which to embed an unhackable codex?
Seems to me that a medium (ie the diamond-tooled matrix envisioned here) presents a good (perhaps not perfect) medium whereby more foolproof algorhythms of the future might reside. Seems like a good step forward, if a marriage might be made.
As an ACTUAL Windows user (and yes, I do use it; software investment, unfortunately) I'd love to see more ONLINE security: integrated firewall, antivirus, spyware, etc. That would more satisfy me.
As both the art director, and production artist, of a recent project, I refute the "waste of time" opinion. Last year, my agency produced for the Atlantic Lottery Corporation a promotion called the Big Scratch. It consisted, in the end, of the production of the World's Largest Scratch Ticket (16'x25'). This has both been the most successful (read $$$$$) promotion in Atlantic Lottery history, but also certified by the Guinness Book.
If making lots o' cash while gaining a world record is a waste of time, I'd LOVE to waste more!
I do a lot of video production for the different firms I freelance for, and, as video tends to be LARGE, DVD remains the only medium currently (aside from a large stash of external HDD's) that are suitable for transporting these videos to the site of the presentation/pitch.
If I were to attempt, in any case, to manage a broadband download to the site of the prospective client/current client of a large (read up to 2 GB) video, the IT department on the other end would be in fucking stitches!
No, as a medium, DVD will be around for a while. It's the size of the pipe: the broadband pipe may be large enough, but the pipe in competency remains small.
it doesn't really affect me, as I'm up here in the frozen North (Canada to you guys...) but it DOES worry me quite a bit.
The powers that be in Canada have to be some of the stupidest peeps I've run across, and running Windows (in ANY version) across an ATM network would be ludicrious... not only are our (majority of) IT prof's able to deal with the expected -- nay, required -- complications, but neither are they competent enough to ensure the safety of the people and monies involved.
Let's stop this now, and NOT let Windows into our environment, without the capable and reliable solutions that we need.
I have four different programs protecting my computer at the moment (admittedly, I'm using Windows 2k, due to software considerations), and I STILL have daily... nay, almost HOURLY notices that I've been breached at some point or another. At one point, I had to resort to almost 24 hours of purging to rid my system of unwanted, illicit, and interferring spyware in my system. Call it unwise surfing, but by my mind, the net should be as free as Yahoo or Google... but ever notice that Spybot blocks TONS of spyware on MSNBC? Hmmmmm.... Not seen any comments about THAT on here... Bill? You listening?
Step 1: Buy the song. Step 2: Set your Sound Blaster to record "What U Hear" mode. Step 3: Use your favourite flavour of sound recorder to make a DRMless copy.
Three steps to a Job-less music economy.
Okay, different industry (advertising) but I recognize your problems. I too, however, echo the sentiment: walking out without a means of support is bungie-jumping over a bare parking lot. Sure, maybe you'll land something soon... or maybe that cat down the block will start looking mighty tasty instead of the food-bank maccaroni you scored three weeks ago.
Try to remember that anything can be tolerated... your decision is which you prefer: long hours and the occasional steak while you look for something else, or Fluffy fondue with roast grass. Your choice. I know what mine has been.
Well, if it's VPN and IPSec problems, they're probably on a network of some kind. Hopefully their IT guys were on the ball enough to have their own Windows Update disabled on their own machines!
is it bad when you get port scanned by Slashdot? Seems to be a current trend. Wake up, Taco!
Flagrant self-angrandizement.

Secure Startup protects users against offline attacks
? PHPSESSID=f6bfd6ada2877cbe69e8f281ef4ca487 that will help you out with that.
Gimme a break. Who needs security from offline attacks more than security from online ones? If that were such a stretch, there are products http://www.computersecurity.com/laptop/cables.htm

Adobe cares about the design shops who buy the legal version and use it eight hours a day, every day.
I'm not sure which shops you're talking about. If I can get out of there in under double-digit hours per day, I'm a lucky pig-fucker!

Geez... good thing we posted that for all to see...
