Funny, i see a direct correlation between the well-behaved-ness of late teen/20's/30's adults and the parents that raised them.

Genes have "something" to do with it and peers have "something else" to do with it, but the most responsible parents regarding discipline and self control will in almost every single case result in well behaved children and eventually adults. I've yet to see this as untrue.

On another note, i will say that completely sheltering your kid from the world as a whole will also lead to culture and social shock when they are "released." Those types usually go nuts and lead rather "interesting" lives (read: The proverbial sex, drugs and rock and roll). That, in my opinion, is bad parenting.

I must respectfully point out that you have stated "melting-pot" in reference to the people in school.

The definition of a melting-pot is...a pot that is melting. That pot is doing its job as it knows how but the flame which fuels that job is destroying the pot which will destroy the contents.

It strikes me as a rather accurate portrayal of the public school system both socially and educationally.

Indeed, we as well will homeschool our kids as long as there is anything we can reasonably do about it. Public school, in my opinion, should be a last resort for the education of americans. IMO, homeschooling families and private schools should receive tax credits for the money they're saving the government.

I think of course that parents should do the job right... However, they aren't doing the job right, so that leaves us at a loss as to what to do. Honestly what do you suggest? You can't exactly force values on parents so they'll properly teach their children. Meanwhile, my kids will someday have to go to school with these other kids.

Honestly if it takes legislation to keep media out of the eyes of kids too young to have it, then so be it. I will properly (in my opinion) judge what my children are and aren't allowed you watch/play. Maybe you do a perfectly fine job at that yourself, but i'd wager the vast majority of parents do NOT.

There have been countless studies based on far more opinion that show that young kids behavior is heavily effected negativley by video game and TV media of a violent nature... Kids watching power rangers do nothing but fight with each other and when those fights turn violent they are using the "techniques" used on power rangers to fight. (attempted karate i guess you could call it) Kids who watch Barney (as silly and sad as it is) are much calmer, they share with each other, and generally get along well.

I think certain regulations should be enacted, but i also feel that if parents did a decent job AT their job, we wouldnt have these issues. I, for instance, might not want a future 11 year old son playinga game as violent as F.E.A.R.

Maybe you think i'm off base, but kids are NOT adults and they can NOT judge things for themselves. They don't always know what things they learn in "fake world" can be transferred to "real world." It's just a set up for things later down the road IMHO.

Then you have games like Deus Ex: Invisible War.

Instead of "our game sucked so no one bought it," they can now say "our game didn't sell well because most people waited and bought used copies."

MS does seem to think the answer to any and all security problems is enabling that danged firewall. Since when will a firewall protect you from an E-Mail virus? (Not that viruses have anything "directly" to do with security all the time...) But the thing is, dealing with the windows firewall is a hassle. If I want a firewall, i'll get a router and use IT as a firewall. (which i have by the way). Hardware firewalls don't completely get in the way like software ones do.

Microsofts stance on security would be best placed in tha area of finding and plugging holes. Part of me wonders: Does MS have any team of people that look for security holes in windows? Or do they just wait until some 3rd party comes out with a release about a newly discovered hole and THEN decide to fix it.

This isn't intended to bash MS, because i use and pretty much depend on their products, but it is meant to maybe gander at their priorities. As a USER of their software I probably care about MS security a lot more than the people who DON'T use it and just bash it on here. :-D I do feel secure in using windows for the most part, but due to past hiccups it's just that nagging feeling... It's just an awfuly big target and THAT makes all the difference.
