I realize that Ron Moore has an executive producer credit and co-wrote several episodes, but then again, MacGyver has an executive producer credit on SG-1 but that doesn't mean he has squat to do with the show (other than making O'Neill cool). All I was responding to was the statment that "... if left with a free hand, do Moore's projects always have to have a messiah?" I would think that the fact that Hawkins is a Messianic character is something that the creator of the show is responsible for (otherwise it is just a story about some carnies in the dust bowl).

actually, moving blue-collar jobs overseas was (and still is to a lesser extent) a major political issue. Remember the rallys where you could pay a buck and hit a Toyota with a sledgehammer? Or all the "Made In the USA" commercials. If you happened to live in an area that was affected by that round of outsourcing (and are old enough to remember the 80's and early 90's) you sure would.

The reason the white-collar jobs are a bigger issue is because we spent TONS of money teaching Joe and Jane Factory worker to answer tech support calls, telling them: "Well, you lost that job, but this one is here to stay" and then we yanked the rug out from under them again.

No, actually in the late 70's (could be wrong about the date) record companies started making the groove tighter on the record. This process, commonly called "groove cramming" did in fact mess with the quality of the record, making the record softer. The fact that a record had a lot of bass or not did not change the distance between grooves. It may be that the company producing the bass-heavy record wants to make sure it comes through as good as possible so they press it in heavier vinyl (180g or better) and don't cram the grooves.

"Also keep in mind how much is spent fighting fires. A reasonable amount of logging might limit the spread of fires. And those trees that are burned in these large fires might have actually helped provide someone with a home instead of turning to smoke." the problem with that is logging companies are more interested in large-diameter (old) trees for both lumber and wood pulp for paper. These trees actually help slow the spread of a fire (they are much harder to burn). If you want to control a fire, you must remove much of the scrubby underbrush that stays relatively dry and goes up like a piece of flash paper when a fire gets near it. Unfortunately, that is not as profitable as large-diameter trees so logging does not help much.
