It rates as worth mentioning for the same reason you started your post with "Time to backup my server."

It's just a simple reminder that the backbone of the internet as we know it still does not "just work" and that you must still do a lot of work to make sure you don't get burned.

And just because you are an OG at web hosting, you can't forget that there are thousands of new people who are coming of age and need to be told these things. Of course you should be running backup scripts anyways and shouldn't need a news story to remind you to backup your server.

And finally, just remember, it's news for nerds, stuff that matters, even though it may not matter TO YOU PERSONALLY.

Sure, until you get a game company that doesn't know how to "Just say no" sometimes, and they try to fulfill every game player's wildest dreams and completely cock up the balance in the game mechanics. This does not affect single player games, but rather average multiplayer games.

MMO's are not completely fucked by this sort of thing because many random variables cause the ebb and flow of the community to shift. Standard multiplayer games have a much tighter interactive experience, and screwing with the way a person plays against 15 other people is far more likely to destroy their gaming experience than screwing up how they grind for 15 hours a week.

BMI works fairly well in the Army, and has been for quite some time now. The problem you run into though is when people only work certain areas and run a lot. Then they lose inches all over their body, except on some key measurement places, but not on others, and it throws their BMI all off.

A more well-rounded workout plan would fix this, or just working your shoulders/neck muscles a lot until you gain an inch or two up there, then your BMI will adjust dramatically.

We have a very brief glimpse in the overall timeline of the universe. For all we know, the universe will switch directions of movement sooner than we expect. It could be that what we know of as the universe is actually just crap floating in the lungs of a huge beast and the universe shifts back and forth with each breath.

Honestly I never understood what gave scientists the idea that they would ever have enough of a clue to know what was going on with the universe. I'm not saying it's wrong to do. Perhaps some awesome realization will come from it. I just really hope that there aren't any scientists that truly believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is exactly what is happening out there.

  25. Over-diagnosed on Autism Reversed in Mice at MIT Lab · · Score: 1

I seem to remember reading that autism is diagnosed far too often, along with ADD and ADHD, when in reality it's just that kids are just not all the same.

I'd be worried when we start reengineering people's brains to try to counter a "disease" that is actually just typical childhood. When parents start worrying that their kids aren't "normal" enough, we start to normalize society. When we can't do it through parenting books, then we start to do it through medicine (ritalin?). When medicine doesn't work, we start to alter the kids directly.

I recall the movie Ghost in the Shell, when the Major Kusanagi is telling Togusa why they hired him. Everyone else on their team is genetically altered and cybernetically enhanced in some way, but he's almost entirely naturally human. He begins to feel this is a weakness, and asks why they chose him. She explains that when you over-specialize, you breed in weakness.

I think that in trying to "fix" all these maladies, we are in fact over-specializing our race, and there will be even more disasterous weaknesses that will arise in the process.
