I'm using the data avalaible to me . If you can show me a study (with actuall bases in reality) that shows installs of linux then I will conceed the point . However it should be pointed out that linux is commonly installed in the server enviroment and as sutch this survay may be an accurate representation of linux server install . It will not show end user boxes , however the point behind this being that the dude in the article was referring to companies migrating from unix to linux . Generaly speaking unix systems are not end user boxes and are more likely servers , so that makes the use of the netcraft survay even more valid . Now if you can point me in a direction of a survay of total linux system installations that would be very nice , otherwise...
I am an independt contractor . Some program I write I try and sell comercialization stile . Piracy simply destroyees my ability to sell these programs . Now most of my software that I sell only phones home and does checks during auto updates . If they really dont want it to phone home then they can disable the auto update feature (and admitedly get no more updates because I dont offer manual updating) . Now if you agreed to this in the AUP or license or EULA or whatever then its your choice.

Despite the abscence of funding, Debian is the second most popular Linux distribution we find on internet web sites, surpassed only by Red Hat, and leaving the likes of SuSE and Mandrake in its wake. Arguably, Debian is the most cosmopolitan of any of the Linux distributions, having a significant following in the former Iron Curtain countries, and well represented in almost every country.

I dont see how there are only two linux distributions that companies consider from moving from unix to linux . If I was considering moving from unix to linux why would I pick redhat? If I am running unix systems they are probably servers , not end user machines . Redhat is a stupid choice to replace unix (rpm is horrible , bloated, and thats about it) . SuSe on the other hand would probably be considered by enterprises looking at doing a switch from unix to linux and have some novell and or lotus systems they would like to work with. Just to re-interate , I do not think (nor should anyone) that redhat is a logical path to look at for migrating from unix (its like downgradeing , except without the license costs) .
I cant beleive that the guy said that linux is about suse and redhat . SuSe linux is surpased by a number of distributions out there. I am just shocked that SuSe would say that . I mean there are many many linux distributions out there and from a whole sort of community prespective SuSe is fairly low .
Yes they did . In ontario all non essential employees were told not to work (a number still did anyways ; go figure.) but non the less that is a huge number of employees . They are to be going back tommorow or monday to there regular works . And the federal goverment has huge pipes. I can only hope CIS has everyt thing locked down in advanced (not bloddy likely given there past performance . )
I use jabber . However 99% of the work out there does not like jabber (and it has some serious firewall issues for most of my friends) . I run my own internal jabber server , so microsoft detecting it is not that bloody likely (although I do have one win2k box behind my firewall....) .
Does any one know witch version of msn jabber emulates? I really really want to keep useing jabber for my IM stuff (its not like I have a whole heck of a lot of choice , but running msn in wine is not my idea of a fun time).

Its called nuclear . Nice , clean [most of the time] . Nuclear truly is the "waive o the future" . Most other power generation methods arent reliabile (wind , solar only provide power at certain times and are prohibittively expensive) other more traditional methods (hydro , coal , oil) have a more finite supply than nuclear . Despite all of the propoganda from both sides , I would look at it this way . If nuclear is realy as dangerous as the activists say then we are f*cked allready . If its as safe as the companies say then get cracking . I want more power:-)
Note : IANAL What about some people send DMCA violation notices to the RIAA saying that you beleive that based on the high volume of encrypted (ASCII encrypted:-) data traffic on there site they are dissementing packe XYZ to witch you represent the copyright . You then get there site pulled (or there connection pulled) and they get to see just how fun it is to be on the receiving end.
CRTC just so happens to be the canadian agency . What I am saying isd that if power line broadband were to be implemented in canada (or tested in canada) and it cuased interferance with amateur radio the CRTC would , in all likely hood , shut down the pilot project . In the US I think the orgnaization is the FCC.
Now , buggies are slower , but the problem is they arent as usefull as cars . For instance , I cant drive a buggy from ottawa to vancouver in a timely fashon , yet the car will get me there in a timely fashon . The buggy is completely unusable for that application . However with HAM radio I can still talk from say northern ontario in the middle of nowhere to just about anywhere in the world (depending on my category of license and transmision equipment) . Where as with powerline broadband the same is true , except to a lesser extent. With power line broadband I can talk to most places in the world (that have internet access and HAM covers wider range than this) when everything is working . It is a bit faster than HAM radio , but if it is implemented then it blocks out the older slower (to to mention more open and relaible) method of communication . If they can implement power line broadband in a way witch does not interfer with HAM radio , then go ahead ; however the way they wish to implement it will effectively block out short wave bands (that are used for a hell of a lot more than HAM radio . BBC , voice of america , CBC international , countless others).
For instance on Ontario roads , in most cities some notable exceptions , I can drive a buggy if I please , but motorists can still drive there car.
The reason why the hourse & buggy anology if flawed is because the car did not stop the buggy from being used; powerline broadband will prevent HAM radio equipment from being used.
really bad comparision . HAM technology is usefull ; sure it might be a bit slower but in the event of an emergancy or failure of other methods of communication it can, literaly, be a life saver for many thousands. HAM radio is also a great educational resource , want to learn about radios? Unfortunitly the CRTC (or FCC in the US or whatever) wont let you just pick a random band and start transmitting on it (I know CB and 900mhz , 2.4ghz , 5ghz ; both are only good for very small regions , and are allready quite crowded and full of junk). (Note : HAM's (in canada not sure else where) have preference on the 2.4ghz band:-) . Anyways when all is said and done , if the power company is causing interference then they either have the choice of fixing it or being forceable shut down (not power but broadband). IANHAM But I am studying to become one (admitedly with slightly out of date material) .
socializing is not just picking up chicks . It is also about making connections (and friends) with other people . Although it would be a lot nicer (from my POV) to make those connections in with a female (need expeirence eh) LAN parties are a good way to connect with people who you dont neccesairly know and are probably interested in the same stuff as you.
LAN party's are sociliazation ; some of the time. I will admit there are some where its just a bunch of losers sitting in front of there computers , but at some you really do make connections with people and the computer games are just part of the process (theres also eating , drinking , talking (once you get eliminated or if you decided to sit a round out because of the eating phase) , and all that stuff) . I will admit they arent the most social gathering , (of cousre if we could get females to come to them I'm sure there would be a lot more socializing....) .
Switch to debian . Debian has a really usefull tool called apt witch (most of the time) automatically resolves dependcies . If you are hooked on redhat you can get apt4rpm [http://apt4rpm.sourceforge.net/] (although its not as good as the native debian one because of debains package management methods) .
1)Full discloser Tell everyone all at once . Submitt to slashdot , security focus , local campus news , local news paper , campus radio station , et all . This probably wont work (trust me). 3)Tell the company If you send it the company ; tell them your giving them a heads up before you do number 1. Give them a specific amount of time. As for legal implications of this ; slashdot is not the place for those kinds of questions . Personally I favour number 3 , with a 72 hour lead time (or whatever you think is reasonable) , coupled by number 1 if they do not fix the problem . If they send threats back to the e-mail you used (if you decide not to use a re-mailer) send them to all local media outlets (and national , but they probably would not care) .

Heres an idea , it also helps make it a bit more secure. All communications of the new protocol must be initiated using IPSEC (using more processor) and then the server gives the client a randomly generate GPG public key each time they connect and the entire conversation must be encrypted with the public key. Of course this will become less effective as processors get faster , but just increase the key size:-) .
Because , to be frank , I prefer the runner up designs .
