is it common for big companies to 'announce' their intention to enter an market, and scare existing competitions enough to eventually surrender to a (cheaper) buy-out?
just hope this is a temporary solution rather than their long-term plan.
otherwise, they can go as far as providing high speed internet connection at $9.95 per month on a 500cc bike and a low speed plan at $2.95 per month on a 50cc bike. and very soon they'll propose to build better road, maybe highway so that information can be moved around more quickly.
Heck - I can even see a new art form growing up around that. Subscribe to 'Ad-ventures', the new series of 15-second serial story vinettes, shown to you in place of commercial advertising! Why follow just one story when you can follow two?!
now you're giving ideas to advertisers who can advertise in this filtered timeframe. money will eventually take over. like Cable TV which you pay to watch movie without ads.
and how do they avoid being double-filtered in this filtered space? well, combining PurdueGraphicsMan's comment under the same parent post and the spam activities nowadays, those fill-the-filtered advertisers will just get one of these 'sensefilters' and modify/watch their own ads until they are no longer filtered out.
the 'sensefilters' probably won't work in real life. it only filters things out visually, but not physically.
this means you're still paying for the bandwidth taken to download advertising, the people you don't like to meet will still be there, probably slapping and kicking you invisibly.
filtering ads on TV will show you what would be there if the ads wasn't there - ie nothing.
personally (male) before i put my money down for anything, i need to think over and over again, because i just read on Slashdot that version 2 of xx is coming out soon etc etc.. so with all these sources of information, i usually end up buying nothing.
my wish list so far: 1. PDA (palm or PPC? WiFi, CF, SD...?) 2. DVD-Writer (which brand? how fast?) 3. Mini PC (get 400MHZ FSB or wait for 433)? 4. LCD (15" or 17", what response time, what res?) 5. CPU (AMD or Intel? 32bit or 64Bit? 128K or 256K cache?) 6. CPU Fan (80mm or 120mm?)
the list can go on, and i haven't bought any of the above yet, although the list started about 2 years ago.
pardon my legal ignorance. but from the movie 'Legally Blonde 2', one has to through so much trouble to get into 'that place' in Washington, then come up with a Bill which needs to be heard and discussed by a panel of judges, etc etc.
so who is really to blame to get this Bill in front of the PoUS to sign?
just a thought, if there was some kind of life on Mars NOW, how do we communicate with them? signals from Earth is probably useless but something physical and visual from the rover might useful.
imagine an alien spaceship landed on Earth, and just moves around and ignores any communication with it.

that is if we assumed we are the one and only generation of life on Earth.
if we're not the first generation (ie those before us had gone to extinction), then maybe this 'younger' plant is more advanced simply because their accumuldated technology hasn't been 'rebooted'.
i think poeple should choose a more friendly domain name if they want to provide an alternative.
i'm not saying that the above domain name is false or unreasonable, but most people would search "microsoft alternative" instead of "microsoft sucks" in google.com.
i've been following Miyazaki's works, but in another language, so "Nausicaa" is totally new to me. however as soon as i see those images in google, all my memories are back on the "Valley of the Wind"
it's nice to see companies start taking some pressures off MS, we have seen incidents when MS was pressed to issues patches which broke more things. just hope MS isn't taking this for granted and fixes things more slowly than it should be.
i thought virus-writing is based on the desirability rather than the ease. so as long as an OS is popular and spot-lit enough, there will be enough people to do so.
and the article mentioned a linux-based OS without root privilege will only damage one's/home directory. personally i think that kind of destruction is enough to damage an OS's security reputation.
the legislation seems to be talking about manufacturers. what is to stop consumers from simply dumping a computer in the bin or landfill or whenever is convenient?
why would anyone want to pay more than 0 cent to download Atari's Tetris to play on an emulator, when there are many Tetris games freely available that works on more common and recent technology?
if it's for hardcore Atari fans, they SHOULD still have a real Atari at home.
i would like to see some clip-on/slid-in cases and parts.
many furnitures can be assembled without screws, and they're pretty solid and stable, i'm sure one can achieve that in computers.
the lack of screws will also eliminate newbie mistakes of "make sure your motherboard is not in any contact with the case because of screws".
would it work if the senders are required to either pay for the email, or face a computational challenge?
so for big companies who charge a fee for subscription, they probably don't mind paying to do a mailinglist.
for personal emails, people will probably choose to compute than pay.

do they have redundancy plan in case those motorbikes are stolen or damaged in accidents?
we no longer need to suffer from listening to nice songs sung by bad singers!
just hook up Vokalazza and start downloading lyrics and some vocal expressions, then we'll have a DIY album.
it probably won't be long until 'authorities' start beating up on such exchange though.
maybe you're missing the point.
all the responses so far are responding to the parent's point, which is 'Anti-Spam?'
did the review, or Amazon.com relate this book to Anti-Spam?

pardon my ignorance, but isn't Lobbying supposed to be done less openly? or is Lobbyist some kind of profession in USA?
i think it's true that women buy more than men.

with the current monopoly situation on reconstruction in Iraq? does Open Source have enough strings to pull there?

or Miyazaki to do LOTR - Anime :)
A picture worths a thousand words

i think at least some internet users will find Site Finder a good service, especially when you're not too sure about a URL, or mistyped one.
the annoying part is the opportunity for verisign to make a good profit out of this as there are quoted millions of mistyped URLs daily.
however who wants/can to provide a sevice (which costs money) for free? or even, who wants to not make a profit when there is profit to be made?
anyway, if site finder is associated with a neutral web directory like dmoz.org, it might be a different story.
