  1. Lazy admin and Auto-Update on OpenSSL Security Vulnerability · · Score: 1

will we see another lazy-admin problem with this (and any) vulnerability in Open Source applications? what good is an immediate bugfix if the admin isn't applying the patch?

pardon my ignorance, does Linux have a similar auto-update feature like in Windows (but with fewer bugs :) ?

  2. Hunting for head hunters? on Have You Personally Used an Honest Head Hunter? · · Score: 1

i think as a manager, one should make no less effort to research, or even interview a couple of head hunters before using them to find the right employees.

everything's the same, you need to right tool for the job, from the very beginning.

  3. Opt-In and Opt-Out on FCC To Enforce Do Not Call List, Not FTC · · Score: 1

is it more difficult to enforce a Opt-In system rather than the Opt-Out (ie DNC-list)?

i think all communication mediums (email, phone, mobile, post, IM etc) should be just that, so that if i want to hear from you, you'll get my details, otherwise please do not disturb, or the offenders can be fined.

at the moment, the 'victims' need to take the efforts to Opt themselves out, which isn't right.

  4. battery life? on Hands-On With The Nokia N-Gage · · Score: 1

if you spend money on this Nokia N-Gage, you SHOULD be playing games on it, and your standby hours will certainly suffer.

the main reason for people to have cellphone is they can use it whenever they need to, what happens if you're enjoying your game half way through, an urgent call came in, and 10 seconds later the battery's dead?

so it's difficult to understand why would anyone design such (gaming) feature on a mobile communication device, which will seriously render the phone itself useless.

  5. IP instead of domain name on PA Child Porn-Blocking Law Challenged, Suspended · · Score: 1

how is it impossible to block domain names rather than IP addresses with the currennt technology of the Internet?

is this an intentional disruption by bad co-operation? when things are badly implemented, court order got suspended and no more need to handle blocking requests?

or are those ISPs have the same mind as Code-Red writer, who tried to DDOS whitehouse.gov's IP instead of the domain name itself.

  6. Right tool for the right job on Segway Riders Get High on Mount Washington · · Score: 1

is Segway ever intended for climbing a hill 6,288-foot high? from what i remember it's for day-to-day city/urban commuting. imagine you hire a servant (for house-keeping) and require him to carry you to work by foot.

  7. OpenSource Anti-Virus software on Symantec Adds Product Activation · · Score: 1

seeing that most people in the open source community is free of virus attacks, is there such thing as an open source anti-virus software?

if so, will it defeat the purpose as virus writers can just look into the codes behind and get around it?

  8. Beta with bugfixes?? on Mozilla 1.5 Beta Released · · Score: 3, Interesting

i apologize for my ignorance, but why is it still in beta if it's meant to fix bugs? wouldn't it be more appropriate to have a bugfixed stable version for innocent users to use immediately and smoothly, and a beta for enthusiastic ones with new features?

  9. older female percentage on Videogames Attract More Women Than Boys? · · Score: 2, Insightful

is it possible that older females (18+) can afford more games/machines than those poor boys? imagine how hard a 6-year-old boy has to beg to get a game?

additionally, i would imagine younger children won't be too excited about reporting their game-playing activities since most of them are more or less restricted by their parents.

  10. targeting youngters on Big Company on Campus · · Score: 1

i think it is a wise move for MS to target young people, maybe uni is a bit too old, they should really try penetrating primary schools etc.

although flawed and insecure by nature, MS is very user friendly, and young children will be drawn to it and eventually hooked. this should naturally lead to more (comfy and familiar) usages in their adulthood.

at the moment, is linux friendly enough for young, innocent learning children?

  11. usability over security? on Sun Mad Hatter Linux Desktop Revealed · · Score: 2, Interesting

from the article, corporate users, or actually most people, are more likely drawn by the GUI [than the security], thus most linux distros are now trying to copy Windows' GUI, hoping users will eventually switch over.

for example, users might find the 'preview' feature in Outlook very userfriendly and easy, although it might 'preview' some virus for you.

so, my question is - can linux be so similar to Windows without forsaking the important security?

  12. Why ask when you can just do it? on Control the Camera on Mars Global Surveyor · · Score: 2, Interesting

besides a "publicity stun" as suggested, why doesn't NASA just progressively and systematically take images of the whole Mars surface?

i'm not sure if it's a job too big/long to complete (seeing only 3% is done), but won't it be useful if we have a 3D geo-map of Mars so the next landing can be more successful?

  13. PC technology is game-driven? on Computer Expectations of Today, and a Decade Hence? · · Score: 5, Insightful

from my experience, computer technology is mostly driven by computer games.

anyone can still type up a letter using an old computer. science/research are adapting to what's currently available, rather than creating the needs, but i might be wrong.

on the other hand, not many game developers are still writing games for the current computers, instead, manufacturers are trying to come out with something so that their consumers can finally play GTA3 smoothly.

so a question to answer your question - what do you expect to see in computer games in the future.

  16. how to edit a DVD? on EFF Supporting Home DVD Editing · · Score: 2, Interesting

are they going to let parents sit in front of the machine for 2 or 3 times the movie length just to go over some scenes and debate which part their children shouldn't be watching?

from the article it looks like the program will skip filth automatically, but what's automated and who sets the rules? parents or the programmer? do you have a drop down menu for 0/1/2 tits etc?

  19. Public facilities' funding on Addison UK Server Roadshow for Schools · · Score: 1

most public schools are living on fundings from government or other sponsors. so if they're switching over to free products, is it possible that they'll get a cut in funding?

eg instead of giving this school $20 million on IT, the government can now assign the money to, say, public transport.

and what would spring to mind when you tell the school board that the software costs nothing but you need extra staff and training etc to set everything up?

sometimes a better product doesn't equal to a better solution. and for some people, they would rather deal with money issue than dealing with time or human resource issues.

this reminds me one of my marketing lectures, which drew an analogy of getting to a beach head first during a battle will always ensure victory.
