If you're already in the Kobo ecosystem, you could upgrade to the Kobo Aura ONE. Kobo bought Overdrive a while back and integrated borrowing into the e-reader. You just search put in your library card info, search for a book, and select borrow. It's all done on the e-reader. You don't even need to use a computer at all. I've been really happy with mine (for the few weeks I've had it). The other option is to go over to the dark side and get a kindle. Many libraries let you temporarily add books to your kindle library and they sync over just like a regular purchase. Either way, no WINE, no USB cable, no proprietary OS on your computer.

The interface used to freeze randomly and completely for varying periods of time. Made it completely unusable for me. It's not an unknown problem. Unfortunately, none of the fixes ever seemed to work for me.
You can rather easily host an instance of Nextcloud on rather modest hardware in my experience. It just needs to be able to run apache/nginx, php, and sqlite (you're supposed to use mariadb/mysql but don't absolutely need to if you're just running it for yourself). Activate the tasks app and you're good to go. The entire infrastructure is all open source and you get a whole lot more benefits than just self-hosted tasks.
Everything is accessible with CalDAV so you can use the built-in sync from the iPhone or DAVdroid and OpenTasks on Android. For desktop/laptop you can access it from the web interface or through your preferred groupware software.
Since security is an issue, if you don't want to pay for an SSL certificate you can self-sign one or get one from Let's Encrypt.

Pandora and Paypal are both technology companies as well as their primary purposes (music and finance, respectively). That is definitely a reason to give pause and may be enough for Paypal's lawyers to prevail. Go back and take a look at Apple Corp vs Apple Computer. One was a record company and the other sold computers. But the computers could make and record audio and that was enough. The battle raged on for 30 years before Apple Computer finally won.
This is absolutely about trademark. I recently started using Pandora again a few days ago. The first time I looked back at my phone I was confused because I hadn't purchased anything with Paypal recently. I didn't know why there was a notification. It was just Pandora. The logos, especially when monochrome, are strikingly similar. As far as I know, Trademark law requires Paypal to defend their mark or risk losing it, too.
I'll second the Canon recommendation. Their fancy inkjets and color lasers are the same way. We have a PIXMA-100 PRO and an MF8280cw. Both will warn you that the toner/ink may be running low but neither will stop...ever. My laser has been warning me that two of the colors (both starters) are "beyond usable life" (or something like that) for over a year now but continues to print (in B&W and color) without a hitch. Given the abhorrent behavior of the other printer manufacturers, I'm not sure I'll ever buy from anyone else. The only problem I've ever had is a little bit of difficulty with the Linux drivers. However, with Windows, Android, iOS, and OSX, though, it just works.

No, I've never done that because that would be rude. It's not my place to judge them. Of the one with whom I had a personal relationship, I know he had a child with greater-than-average medical needs. The others seemed to signal that they were just trying to make some extra money. I don't know where you live, but in my state, the average teacher salary is ~$50,000/year (source). I wouldn't exactly call that rolling in dough, especially when you consider that many have a master's degree and also have their own kids to take care of. Also, our budgets for resources and supplies is garbage in this state. Many teachers ask for donations of paper, glue, etc from the parents. Many end up buying the stuff they don't get with money out of their own pockets (so that employee discount helps). The problem just magnifies when you get to poorer school districts.
Agreed, WalMart is just the poster child for the larger living wage problem. When I was in High School (80s), jobs like that (in my town) were 80% staffed by kids with no real income needs - just for pocket money, there would be the occasional older loser who just didn't care that they could only afford to live in a trailer park with 3 roommates in an 800 square foot tin can built 30 years ago, and once in a rare while - a true hardworking person in a tough situation who was just using the income to get by until they got something better.
Today, there are so few better opportunities out there that the demographic of who's working near minimum wage jobs has become much more diverse, and people who really want out don't have nearly as much opportunity to get out. It's not impossible, but it's much much more challenging and competitive.

Even in the 90's when I was in high school, I knew people who worked at K-Mart, Pizza Hut, grocery stores, and other low wage positions. Now those positions are increasingly staffed by older people. A knew quite a few people at Wal-Mart who were teachers trying to supplement income on the evenings and weekends. It's a sad commentary that the people who are educating my children are having to work 7 days a week just to make ends meet or provide a decent living for their own kids. How much time does that leave for lesson planning outside of school? Something needs to give. I don't think huge minimum wage increases are the answer because that will make everyday items more expensive and lead to even more job elimination. I'm personally a big proponent of the various universal basic income schemes. We'll see what happens in the future, but the status quo is just not heading in a good direction.

Wal-Mart, right before I left, announced that there would be a $10/hr minimum for front-end workers which was a decent improvement from the previous status quo. That being said, Wal-Mart isn't that bad of a place to work, especially after you break through that living wage barrier and get up to store level management or higher (and they will promote almost anyone as long as they are reasonably competent and stick around long enough). They even offer health insurance to part-time employees (again, if you've been there long enough). From what I understand, it's not as awesome as when Sam was still alive, but it's still not bad.

I actually worked at Wal-Mart for 7 years and have several phone calls out to a few market managers because I wouldn't mind going back (at a much higher pay rate after I'm done with school). I'm in the pharmacy, mind you, but the seven years I spent there were as a tech. I can assure you that the rank and file get bonuses every single quarter. There's a big poster in the break room tracking progress. The bonus is given based on store performance in four categories (profit, inventory turns, total sales, and something else). If you're at a high performing store you can make an extra $2000 a year or so (sadly that's ~10% extra for a full time employee). Number-wise for someone like you who probably makes six figures it's probably not much, but to those people who are barely above minimum wage it's huge.

Adoptable storage is the name that android gave to the ability to store entire apps on a specially formatted portion of the microSD card rather than the previous implementation of some developers allowing a small portion of the app to be moved to an encrypted container file on the card. I think it was meant to allow people to supplement those really tiny entry level phones that may only give you like 4 GB of storage for your apps. It makes sense, though, that you could put all your sensitive apps/data on adoptable storage so you would end up with a seemingly innocuous phone if you erased/destroyed the SD card. In fact, you could mail the SD card, instead, so that you would have a fully functioning phone while traveling but none of your sensitive data would be available at your border "interview."
I don't know if it's a setting somewhere, if it's model specific, or some change that happened with more recent updates, but my wife's iPhone 6 keeps updating itself in the middle of the night shortly after a new point release of iOS. The GP and my wife might be clicking the wrong button but my wife swears she's not. I don't know because I don't use Apple devices since I dumped my PowerMac G3. Apple's not the only one to do this, though. My Samsung S5 Active kept updating itself at night. I use it as my alarm, too, so this stupid "security feature" has made me late for work twice now (my phone is encrypted and asks for password on reboot). I finally figured how to disable the update app using ADB after the last time; my wife may not have that option without a jailbreak. Automatic updates that require a reboot are plain anti-consumer and unacceptable.
I don't know if you're trolling, but on the off chance that you're not, the person doing the swab is your doctor/PA/Nurse/Pharmacist/InsertMedicalProfessional when you realize that your symptoms don't line up with "normal upper respiratory infection" as in you have PAIN IN YOUR THROAT (and inflamed tonsils and/or spots on the back of the roof of your mouth and/or nausea) that indicates strep throat or terrible body aches (that differentiate a cold from the flu).
The point is simple: If you have normal upper respiratory infection symptoms (runny nose, stuffy nose, cough, etc) and nothing else,stay home for at least a week and preferably 10 -14 days and just treat it with with over the counter symptom relief
Strep throat, when it presents normally, is a dead giveaway and is easily tested for with a quick swab. The advice that the Anonymous Coward was giving was for upper respiratory infections. In that case, viral infections are generally self limiting and will go away within 10-14 days. If it takes longer than that, you likely have a bacterial infection and it's reasonable for your doctor to treat it with empiric antibiotics. The only exception is if you suspect the flu (body aches, etc) in which case it can be tested for, quickly, with a swab and you get Tamiflu.
Genuinely curious. How does FreeNAS work with OS X? Have you tried it yet?
Amazingly well. FreeNAS supports CIFS/SMB and AFP among others so you can share files with pretty much any platform you can imagine.
Also, when you're setting up an AFP share, there's a check box that just says "Time Machine." If you check the box, when you can use OSX's built in Time Machine backup service to back up to that share. You don't have to dedicate an entire drive as I'm told you have to do with the official Apple hardware and you can even set up quotas for the dataset that the backup is on so that Time Machine will autoprune it and it won't get out of control.
I used Windows Home Server for a few years, then tried Amahi, then rolled my own server, but I'll never go back to any of them since I started using FreeNAS. I don't think I've run into a single sane thing I've wanted to do that I haven't be able to do yet. Be warned, though, that ZFS is one heck of a memory hog. That being said, I'm running my system with 6.5 TB of storage on only 4 GB but I wouldn't recommend it. I'm going to upgrade the system as soon as I have the free cash.
To our new overlords: Can someone please fix this lame javascript based moderation system and put in a submit button? I can't count the number of times I've picked overrated instead of funny because my finger came close enough to my touchpad to move the mouse. This whole replying to undo moderation thing is lame. Please tell me you're kidding. These are iOS users we're talking about. They have purposely chosen the "easy to use" OS (even with all its limitations). Like hell you're going to get them to figure out how to compile an app
Not only that, in order to run XCode you need to have a Mac. You just went from a $200-$600 investment in the iPhone/iPad and added a thousand dollars to it. There are no shortage of iOS users with Windows machines who like their iDevice but aren't ready to make that leap to a Mac.
The people looking at sentences in the mid-twenty year range are all wanted for violent crimes (murder, attempted murder, terrorism) meanwhile the people looking at mid-thirty year sentences are wanted for drug trafficking and fraud. Seriously? You actually kill someone and you do less time than facilitating their high?
I thought Europe was supposed to be a more progressive place since everyone is always making fun of the screwed up priorities here in the USA. I guess we've been working extra hard to export our stupidity along with the rest of our culture.
What is the point of that, though? Why can't Adobe just make a new format with a new file extension? PDF is about print-ready formatting. Adding a crappy, dynamic, proprietary thing inside a PDF is like using a Word DOC to send someone a video. Who does that???
