only an idiot compares a "bleeding-edge Linux distro" to a major production OS release
So Fedora is a just a research toy, and should not be used for anything important? There are no significant bugs or holes in any of the SuSE / RHEL / Gentoo / ect. distros? Unless you are running Debian Stable, you should shut up.
I'm not sure that Fedora is even intended for "production environments", it just seems that the new version cycle is just to often to allow companies to "standardize" anything on Fedora. It's a terrific development OS, and Red Hat will continue to look to it for road test possible additions to Red Hat Enterprise. In the "enterprise", you can't just upgrade you OS willy-nilly every few months to a year, you need stability.
Powell's World of Books (powells.com) has an EXCELLENT technical selection, takes up it's own building down the street from the main store. Sure it's a little bit more $ for the book (but not much), but they are much nicer people...
Number of brains? Get one yourself! China and India are similarly populated.
According to the CIA World Fact Book, the population of India is around 1,065,070,607, and China is around 1,298,847,624. It's less of a spread than I had thought, but a difference of 233,777,017 is, well, more than just a few.
And anyway, the point is that China is doing more basic technology research that India. Just the way it is.
I think China will eclipse India. While both will be taking top spots as the Western world continues to focus on financial dominance rather than technology research. But China will pull ahead simply because of numbers of brains and the fact that China is doing basic research while India is taking advantage of existing technologies, with very little basic research.
The Dalles is well within commuting dist. from many of Portland's burbs. From Gresham, it's a little under an hour. The "Barcelona is near Paris" thing is way off. And, up here in Seattle, many people do commute an hour or more (one way) every day. My guess is that down in California where these people come from, such commutes are normal.
Most high school kids would describe where they live as 'a depressing shitholes'. That's the way teenagers are. It does not say much about the town, since most teenagers wish to flee their depressing lives for the "excitement" of The City.
Those jobs won't be doing sexy things. The only reason you put a facility in the middle of nowhere is because it's cheap in terms of space. Skilled labor is virtually nonexistant and relocation expensive...... Nevermind the locals are going to hate you because you're making twice what they are and you're "some city kid", etc.
Portland is full of skilled labor, and from the Portland burbs, The Dalles is very commutable. The quality of life in The Dalles is quite high as more and more yuppies bail out of Portland for more rural and livable areas. The Dalles is not the same town it was 20 years ago. Also, Oregonians are much more progressive than you seem to imply. You've never been here, I cam tell.
First of all, these days you can find meth labs just about anywhere. But in general, your characterization of The Dalles is bullshit, so much so in fact that I can tell you have never been there. I think you are thinking about some of the shit-holes in Washington and Oregon, like Wenatchee. The Dalles has been steadily moving in the yuppie direction for the last 15 years or so.
The Dalles is about 1.25 hours from downtown Portland, I know a lot of people that commute an hour or more up here in Seattle. If you live in the burbs, it's closer. But if I worked in The Dalles, I'd live nearby. Also, The Dalles is not Bumfuck Nowhere, it's a very nice little town near Bonneville Dam, some spectacular vistas in the Columbia River Gorge, and is becoming quite "gentrified" with rich yuppies who are bailing out of the city. It's a two Starbucks town...
Where I work, web mail like Hotmail and gmail is blocked; it's work, so why would they need it? And as far as pop-ups, we block porn sites as well, the ones that come with CNN and Fox and other "legitimate" sites are generally pretty benign.
I hear this secretary vs. technical staff argument all the time, but in truth it's the techies who think the are immune to virus and such, and head out on the net to surf willy-nilly,picking up communicable diseases and bringing them home to the network.
On second though, you're right. Personally, I think the only realistic solution is filters at the mail server and client end. Spammers will always either find an ISP that does not care (it's all about $$$ to them), or just create new accounts when old ones are closed, as you say.
But the Service Pack does not cost any money, and even many people here at Slashdot think it is a step in the right direction for M$!
So you are saying that Linux is not ready for prime time because it does not cost $300?

Hey Timothy: This story is from 4GuysFromRolla.com, not Roland Piquepaille. Need more coffee this morning?
And we all know that the latest bleeding edge Linux distros are bug free... Right?
nah they said you could dub to cassette tracks! read the fine preview maybe ;)Yeah, but only one copy for "back-up" purposes, than it blows up!

So, because Google is still "good" (but for how long???), they can own a stupid patent like this, and because MicroSloth is "bad", they can't???
No it's "astroturfing".

I believe that they have changes both the formulation of the foam on the fuel tank, and also how it is attached? Something like that...

Didn't CherryOS turn out to be a fraud?
So I can emulate my P4 on my P4? Swift!
I'm sorry, "One great step for hemroids"? Is this a "geek" afliction?
Hey now, that's a private matter.
Err, news server end , but you get my drift.
