    Free DOS has been a savior when you need a BIOS update and the vendor only gives an image loaded with some DOS executable.

    Lot's of talk going around about leveling the playing field, but offshoring of any jobs is definitely not a level playing field.

    Even though I can be pretty Right Wong on stuff, I don't it's unreasonable to say if you are going to enjoy US distributions systems, regulations, and misc infrastructure, and most of all a consumer market that pays the prices you are asking for, then you need to make your stuff or support your services here. Feel free to build shit in China or India...but sell it there for the prices you can get there.

    THAT, is a level playing field.

    So Made in China stuff for China, Made in Japan stuff for Japan. US exports lots of arms and ammunition, may you can keep it to your self. But then you might argue, hey there is a demand for it, therefore other countries are buying it, there is nothing wrong in that. The same logic applies to "cheap" labor there is a demand for it, therefore.. Do look up globalization.

    They found out that you can either hire a domestic techie for 50-80k/yr or hire an imported techie for 25-35k/yr
    1. To get sponsored for H1B you must earn more the 38k/annum
    2. Most of the H1B workers I know earn more than 60k. I also know many who lost their jobs and moved back to their respective countries.

    Imagine all those space/asteroid probes we will be sending out, assuming it will come back only after centuries, 'll need software that works for centuries and software on the ground station that remains compatible with it.

    what about historical data, would we have to retrieve/upgrade all digital documents just to make sure that it remains compatible, couple of centuries from now.

    I'm bequeathing all my asteriods in the alpha-epsilon nebula to my great great grand children in a will written in Word, after all.

    since we have a debate on our hands about legalizing drugs[marijuana, coke..], how about we legalize spam , companies can register,float public offerings. From the pro's side, it would make companies accountable for illegal access of other computers to send spam. This still doesn't mean that there wouldn't be rogue spammers. But if there is more money to be made and acceptance, big fishes will choose to register - may be charge these companies per packet basis, like the old days.

    As far as I know India doesn't have an H1B equivalent, so even if you are willing to relocate, it is near impossible.
