The city contained the Zeiss-Ikon optical factory and the Siemens glass factory (both of which were entirely devoted to manufacturing military gunsights). The immediate suburbs contained factories building components of radars and electronics, and fuses for anti-aircraft shells. Other factories produced gas masks, engines for Junkers aircraft and cockpit parts for Messerschmitt fighters.

In Coventry, the Luftwaffe raid destroyed most of the industry and killed
    554. The Dresden raid, on the other hand, killed 25.000 - 300.000 and destroyed a handful of factories. Still think civilians weren't the primary objective of the RAF?

That's the German Green Party for you. They started out as a environmentalist party, which was novel at the time. Now that all parties are pro-environment, the Green Party have turned into little enviro-nazis who oppose all technology invented after the 19th century. This results in fuckups like the Maglev sellout (1. develop tech in Germany for billions, 2. sell blueprints to China for a song, 3. ?, 4. profit??) and the belief that power from coal is good for the environment because unlike nuclear power, it contains no atoms. While we're at it, why don't we cut funding for nuclear fusion to zero and spend the money on freaking windmills!
    What? Okay, I'll stop ranting.

Yes, but they would be jamming their own system as well because Galileo was going to use the same frequencies as GPS. As the article points out, however, the EU was "persuaded" to use different frequencies to make it possible for the U.S. to disable Galileo.

Sharing frequencies wouldn't have caused GPS and Galileo to interfere because Galileo was supposed to use a clever way of superimposing signals.

Yes, but for the same reasons IBM is pushing Linux right now (makes business sense) I would expect them to defend Linux against patent claims because:

    a) IBM is making a lot of money from Linux and wants to keep selling it
    b) It doesn't cost them a lot to prevent patent claims against Linux because nobody will be suicidal enough to sue IBM over patents.

  9. Will IBM Defend OSS? on EU Parliament Approves Software Patents · · Score: 1

IBM has a patent portfolio large enough to fend off any patent lawsuits against Linux and other open source software. IBM is also one of the biggest supporters of Linux, so there is still hope that IBM won't leave us high and dry when the patent attacks on Linux begin.

As someone who lives in Germany, I admire the French efforts to retain their culture. What's different now?

I can't really speak for the four-year old distro you tried since I've only been using Linux for a year, but from what I understand, KDE and Gnome weren't even close to the usability of Windows.
Today, I would say it's almost there, not quite, but almost. However, don't forget that it makes up for that in other areas, for instance you won't have all those crap DLLs and registry keys accumulating on your system as you install / uninstall programs.
Can I install Linux and be productive in less than 5 hours? Can I insert a CD and have the install routine work?

I have installed RedHat and Suse several times on different computers and it was always easy as 1-2-3. That is not to say that there isn't old hardware that won't work or is a pain in the butt to get working, but in my experience the install process has always been as hassle-free as with Windows.
    Are there any games yet?

There are not too many native Linux versions of popular games, but a large number of games reportedly run under Wine or WineX.
Can I develop Windows applications from within Linux now? Or at least run VS or VS.NET?

I found this Usenet message from somebody saying they were able to run VS under Wine, albeit not perfectly (no debugging). I gather you use VS all day developing Windows apps, so it's probably worth booting into Windows since you will want to test your application in a Windows environment, etc.

Windows is a very good operating system (mostly because of Linux), and I was happy with it until out of curiosity I gave Linux a try. I only use Windows for games now.
Both have their ups and downs. Do check out Linux, it's nothing like it was when you tried it four years ago.
