    JW: So tell me about the free software.

    VV: So what you want to know?

    JW: It's free right?

    VV: It's free, but it ain't 100% free. I mean you can't just walk into Fry's and grab a copy of Red Hat off the shelf without paying for it. You have to download it or copy it from a friend.

    JW: That's because it's under the GPL.

    VV: Right. It breaks down like this It's leagal for you to buy it, it's leagal for you to copy it and if you are into programming, it's legal for you to modify it. Companies can sell the software, but that don't matter, 'cause you can turn around and give away copies of it. Limiting redistribution is a right the GPL explicitly doesn't give developers.

    Something I discovered with a neon transformer is that most things are conductive to some degree if you apply enough voltage :) concrete included.

    companies and groups have no problem finding the ISP, or upstream provider in order to put pressure on individuals with content they want to suppress. Why should this be any different?

    Just send out a TEX formatted letter to 100 people informing each person that you are taking them to court. Maybe 2 people will be able to read the letter and show up to defent themselves, 10 may write back to tell you they coun't read the attachment, but the rest are all yours !!!

    For Macs running OS X, a locked dummy file in an application's package will protect the entire file from being copied without a password.

    Does anyone know how this works? I am curious because it seems like you could just copy the rest of the files. I'm thinking about getting one of these, but I want to make sure it is 'real UNIX'.

    If it is determined that the copyright holder misrepresented its claim regarding the infringing material, the copyright holder then becomes liable to the OSP for any damages that resulted from the improper removal of the material. [512(f)]

    How should these damages to a developer be quantified?

    First, primaries are an internal function for the parties to determine who that party's candidate will be. It should not be regulated, as it is a private function of a private organization. It's entirely fair for a party to limit participation to its own members

    Is it also fair to limit membership in a party to those who are not members of other parties?

    A 1998 study by the private Educational Testing Service of nearly 14,000 fourth- and eighth-graders found the more time students spent practicing math using computers in school, the worse they scored on math tests.

    I had several teachers who would tell me something along the lines of "a calculator/computer is a useful tool, but you need to be able to figure out if the answers it is giving you are right". I even remember that there was some emphasis on "estimation math".

    Amen. What is this fascination with internet voting? We have had the technology for ~10 years to have automated computer voting by phone, but never did as far as I know.
