Most of the people running the show in the Syrian revolution have fundamentalist and pro Al-Qaedah positions. This was seen in many sectarian and extremest speeches by Mosk Imams in Daraa and other cities and is also seen in some of the pro-revolution demonstrators. Even though the Arab media moronically tries to hide these facts and images (picture below shows Bin-Laden and Hamas founder), foreign governments have people on the ground and know these facts. This is the regime that "eradicated" nearly all members of the Baha'i faith from the entire country and has used chemical weapons against the civilian Kurd villages in Iraq.

The super-computer may not be much for many but is a trend, and Iran IS a threat.

Putting more restrictions or tracking the companies in the far east that sell them technologies will not stop them but would make it more costly and difficult for them.

As I said in the above post, OOo still cannot handle forms adequately. PDF forms are much better when they can be filled and then printed by the user (or submitted via a script). A great future improvement would be the ability to export the presentation animations and transition effects (Impress) to Flash animations & transitions.

It would be also interesting to see the worldwide distribution of the downloaded versions (directly or via Torrent) and the clients used (browsers, torrents, and download clients).

The idea that you need special software and a complex AI to detect and trace terrorists or their supporters is stupid. You can easily find and trace them; they have websites that air their beheading videos and they frequently post their opinions without using any significant anonymization.

"Hsinchun Chen and his Artificial Intelligence Lab at the University of Arizona" may enjoy the funding and all the goodies and fame that comes with it, but its effectiveness in curtailing terrorism is null. The false positives generated are very worrisome. False accusations may not be important to him, but think of labeling someone HIV+ve based on a sensitive but nonspecific test. Inocent individuals have to go thru a complex and stressfull process just because of his project.

I can tell you that terrorist groups are politically and economically "stable" in the middle east, and they have no shortage of funding even from US based individuals. Their funding is not always as a direct transfer but frequently as small amounts of cash, buying an apartment or a car from a specific company, donating to a civil organization who actually funds and/or supports the families of people active in those groups, etc...

People who sympathize with these terrorist groups still go to the US. It is actually much easier for these individuals to get positions in the US since they have better connections based on their religious and political affiliations. On the other hand and not infrequently honest people get filtered by the system.

They could do a much better job in many other ways to identify and cut the funding of these groups.

I tried Win98SE with great results in 1999 for few years, repeatedly tried to install Debian until Sarge came out, tried DSL (dual boot with Win98), tried Win2000, tried DSL again, and now I am back to Win98SE with MSOffice XP, IE6, and Opera as default browser (Firefox also there). I was disappointed that my attempts to install Debian in 2000 were time consuming and mostly futile (even on my Desktop) and I had to go back to Windows; the dual boot stuff containing Linux were just sitting there; it was too much effort for my usual work needs to use the Linux side.

From all that, I noticed that Win98SE gives me less headache, not as a system as much as the applications that I need to use. OOo and Firefox took ages to launch on the Linux part in comparison to MSOXP. Opera also ran faster with Win98SE.

I finally noticed that most of the people I work with have difficulties even with Windows systems so my attempts to suggest Linux as an alternative system were halted on the drawing board. Many people have trouble when they see a multi-boot option. Although most IT literate people like the /. crowd do not like the "over friendly and paternalistic" approach of windows as an OS, as far as your babe next door (or alternatively joe average user) is concerned, the WIndows approach still seems the most successful way to reach the mass market.
