oh yeah those rubber ducks pose a real hazard to shipping. i hear the captain of an oil tanker was out for a swim recently and he almost choked on one.
yeah but when people actually build useful stuff they don't necessarily follow this recipe. in fact i heard this quoted a million times in HS but i don't see many real scientists that work that way. i think it is mostly for biologists.
could someone please explain the point of this article ? like most nytimes science article it seems to have zero content. it would be nice if for a change they explained something about mathematics
I mean, if someone (a real person, that is) posted a testimony that Windows is better than Linux, then it could be news, but this feels just like regurgitation.
you know, you joke about that, but it is exactly stuff like that that keeps people from using linux. when your actually using your computer for something, you can't spend your time with stuff like that.
i use a 700 mhz pentium pc with linux and it is fine for everything i do, including a lot of intensive scientific computing. i don't speak for everyone, but how many people will really be adversely effected by a speed difference between the 970 and the best pentium ?
i was really excited when i first got this book, but i never have liked reading it. every few months i go back to it hoping i will change my mind, but i still hate it.
my major problem with it is the notation. he uses some symbols, like an "L" and a reverse "L" that are very light (the font) and i find it very annoying.
in general, i think that the book could be shorter. regular expressions are not very deep, and even though they are useful, a whole book is not necessary (at least for my purposes).

...would that mean we would have to call it GNU/schizophrenia ?
it has been my experience that it is impossible to get a robot to do the simplest things. navigation among clutter, picking up an object, etc. are all research topics. people usually get results in very narrowly defined environments.
periodically when i hear about people at places like the MIT media lab making robots have feelings, it makes me quite annoyed, since it is such a ridiculous topic. hard robotics problems get ignored, and the media doesn't ever write stories about the limitations of robots, which are enourmous.
there are good reasons for those laws ? - like to keep track of where all those troublesome jews are ? oh i forgot, there are no jews left in germany. but in any case you've got some nice orderly lists.
in france the radio stations have to play a certain amount of usic in french. and in germany if you move you have to register with the local police station. europe is much more paternalistic ( fascist).
no that's ok, you can spell it that way.

OH! that was Rob with you ? at first i thought so....
i agree completely. and so the answer is that people who APPLY computers need system administrators. people who like messin around with them don't.
the picture "Waging Mental Battle with a Proof" is really silly. those guys need a good beating.
i'm not asking for hard math. just content other than a mathematician that quotes a terrible play about mathematics written by a non-mathematician.

here's my first entry: N(ot) A S(afe) A(irplane)
i guess that answers my question...how ironic.

seiously though, what about the original issue ? don't you think restrictions on what languange a radio station uses is a bad thing ?
hey did i mention a little event called WW II in which more deaths were caused by europeans in less than 10 years then the rest of the century ?
i guess gun control would have been more handy to have in europe from 1939-1945.

don't they go to the movies ? they are making a BIG mistake...
