we have been looking for a good solution as well snort might work in our case we have alot of password hacks for our content since we run more of adult type sites.. we have use proxy pass software to deter password sharing, leaks, or proxy attacks. but as far as the script kiddies you never know what they are up to and they prob are watching the boards for the latest hacks and using google to find unsuspecting webmasters and pray on them.
I would also like to hear about other options from sw to hardware for any type of intrusion detection.. is there any ones with a nice gui system ?
We run an adult video company and have tons of video and pictures that we have to make sure is backed up..
our raid system 2 1.6 terabyte buffalo terastations.. which after raid 5 you get about 1.1 terabyte per box.. we have another raid system that mirrors most of our data and backups anything that changes based upon rsync for windows.
we use a 3ware raid care and have 4 400's in the system.. For backups that we take home, we have a hard drive cage in our pc that we have drives we can pull out put up backups on and store them at another loation..
of course this is the poor mans backup but with HD prices to cheap. Tape backups well you never know whats going to happen with them and your data isnt accessable quick.. who knows if your going to have that same backup software for your tape drive 5 years from now.. or if your tape drive fails.. which happens alot..
just my.2
Here is a nice raid system coming out soon which will work pretty much with any OS flavour..
http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/entry/296/buffalo_tech nology_terastation
it would be great since pretty much right now I have raid 5 at home, 4 drives using a 3ware card.
gives me about 700 gig which supports my movies, mp3s, pictures collection. I mount all the media into the xbox media center and play it back on my 61" Sony big screen, pretty much a good combo.. Ill deff get one of these NAS systems..
man this is a piece of crap. I just recently moved from San Fran to San Diego and my loft doesnt face a direction where I can get DTV, so im forced to use COX. You can tell that the GUI of the SA8000HD is done by programmers, its just plain ugly, and the lack of alot of missing features is really a turn off. I come from the Tivo background and these other companies really need to look at what they have done as far as user interactivity. the SA8000 has many problems that I find really annoying and talk about expensive.. basic cable, hd package, pvr rental and pvr service.. come on guys who's ever gonna pay for your stuff if it costs 70-100 a month? and the lack of missing channels WB HD, UPN HD..:( boo thumgs down..
This is pretty neat. I run mame on my xbox and have alot of roms would be nice to have a good screen dump of bad roms.. anyhow just doing a first post thing here:)
Glitch art !! go go go !
this company BOUGHT a patent that what they claim covers any sort of streaming video or audio.. come on.. bah.. they have set their sites ont he adult industry as a testing ground to see who would cave in. However they thought wrong, a few of the bigger companies have been in the courts fighting against this silly patent and are coming out on top..
anyhow some more info.. Acacia is on Eff's top ten most wanted list.
http://www.eff.org/patent/wanted/patent.php?p=ac ac ia
we use alot of 3ware cards, they seem to be the best to handle either raid 1 or 5.. depending on your needs. the best thing really depends on the amount of data you want to keep raided. if you have more than the max hd space out. i think 300+ right now u might want to look at raid 5. but if u have 300 and under just pick up to of the biggest hds and run them as mirror.. works great.. 3ware has a really cool web interface that you can check the status of your drives locally or remotely.
one word of advice scrub out AOL..:)
their is a bigger issue here, say you follow the rules for sending out spam, whats their to stop the people from complaing and getting your isp or worse the ftc involved even tho you did follow the rules? seems like the end users have the say and depending on how many people voice their issues with spam it will always be up to you to prove you did the right thing and followed the rules..
CAN Spam means people CAN send unsoliticed emails, provided the follow the rules outlined, and if its porn they have to follow the guidelines for sending this stuff, but the law allows people to spam hence the word "CAN"
Im reading alot while doing some searches on google that skype has spyware in it even tho if you go to their site they claim they dont.. im not talking pocket pc right now.. BUT i hear there are sleeping spyware dlls for skype on the pc.. ??
anyhow. on top of that. im about to launch a new sync system all your pocket pc owners if you want a beta hit us up at http://www.syncalot.com
sorry for the shameless plug.:)
speaking of all these poker servers is there any software out there that a unix admin could install and have windows/unix clients for people/friends to gather and play with stats?
hehe, wap is so outdated why would you want to view any image content in wap.. most phones do some sort of basic html now called chtml and there are many others out there doing some form of html to make it easier on developers.. I saw this site that brings adult content to users PDA's in Playboy a few months back ( Pocket-XXX )but you cant get it free unless you sign up with your credit card so hopefully weeds out any minors..
over the last year there has been a company claiming a patent on streaming video/audio, (ie not live) but anything recorded that gets d/l and then is played back on a computer. I would say that 3/4 of the internet does that.
They are now targeting the adult industry first and sending out letters to individuals demanding $1500 and up from each webmaster who has video on their site. Some of you might not care and say well its the adult industry let them get screwed, but this is a more serious issue for everyone who uses video/audio on their web site and will eventually get hit by this company for voilation of their patent.
now this may see really silly to alot of people having a patent on this but they are out there sending letters and getting some people to sign. Here is a PR released by a site called fight the patent which is helping people who get letters fight this.
http://www.fighthepatent.com/v2/PR-1117.html
I cant seem to find a link anymore to a scanned in letter, but its very generic, and lits the persons name with some paragraphs stating their claim on their patents, how ever no web sites are mentioned in the letter and their demand is $1500+ and you need to have this in by nov 30th.
this goes even further. if your a website owner and LINK to a site that has video/audio on it and make money off of sending users to that site you are also in violation..
now come on fokes this is really out of control it seems their patent is based upon an idea of sending data from one location to the next then playing back that video/audio content. There is no actual software technology they developed that people are using with out paying.
just another reason these patent guys really need to look at older patents and start really removing them. Hell I saw a special on a father who patent his girl swining from left to right instead of front to back..
its all about prior art and acacia patent lies in 1990. so if there is anything or any proof of video/audio d/l, streaming this patent can be changed.
sorry for the rant, its just a few of my friends are in this situation and i thought maybe a voice for them would help..
just search google news for the word Acacia to find out more.
I wonder if all this strangeness could be that yahoo will be dropping google listings soon so they are cleaning up their database.. who knows..
they also just bought a new company that specializes in search engine tech.. not that would effect anything yet.

this is what my post was about.
DTV raided several dealers of legal smart cards on the net, yes they can be USED to decrypt the signal, but so can a CDR be used to pirate software.
anyhow, with the DMCA in hand they are going though the customer lists and sending out letters demanding a payment free.
its a guestimate that they have sent out around 50,000 letters so far to individuals, and really if you don't have money to pay for a lawyer your stuck, this is basically a form of extortion.
This is the biggest piece of BS that DTV is dong and the DMCA allows this.
People who bought a device over the net, mainly smart card readers which are perfectly legal are receiving letters from DTV and demanding money for this. If you dont reply they threaten with taking your to court.
Well, umm if i buy a device over the net how do you know i used this device to steal/decode/decrypt your signal? Dont you have to prove I did this, buying something doesnt prove anything?
Its like saying you own a CDR and you used to to copy/steal software so you should pay me X amount..
WTF, man the DCMA really allows for some evil stuff to happen to end users.
beaware!:/
Well I just finished playing thought all the maps for ET, granted Im still getting used to the objectives but I have to say this rocks, and the quality of the level design and models are great.
I think some people get turned off to this game quickly cause its pure chaos when you first start out, so I would really read up on any information about the maps, classes, objectives etc. its really a great game once you get into it.
We have been spending some time setting up a new dedicated gameing portal and still find that CS is one of the more popular games. Now granted its very old tech, but tech doesnt make a good game. I developed games for about 9 years from various official quake mission packs, and beyond.
I think Urban Terror for the q3 engine is pretty close to CS, but I think CS still is played more due to its simple and clean nature.
alot of people tho are switching to BF 1942 Desert Combat mod, if u havnt yet your missing out !
Im sure if they did, they prob have some clause that says we get exclusive rights for X time of the game on our console first before you can port it to another console and sell it.
with the PC version coming out in May, im sure they have milked as much ps2 users as they can, buy going xbox and game cube, they are just gonna sell more and more and more and more:)

Do we really need DVD Drives or Media to store our programs on? With HD's getting cheaper and cheaper, why not just take all your media content and put it onto a dedicated HD and use something like the Xbox media player, or other media devices to mount your HD and just play from there. No need for DVD dics (great for back up and to take over to a friends) but I think eventually it will just end up going to a HD and streaming from there in your home..
just my opinion.
dont get the Qcast tuner for ps2, i have had it for the past 6 months and it never works right with my media i get and they say you should re-encode it to fit the specs they can support. They also have issues with SVCD playback.. come on, this has been talked about on their forums for some time but no fix.. I have given up and moded the xbox for xbmp which is great and has 100+ more features and such.. I figured i would give qcast a try but i have to give it thumbs down:/

hmm, isnt the limit on windows only 2 terabyte? I think its possible to raid 2 raid 5's together with some sort of mounting on linux but.. >>?
