"I am not sure what tech jobs are parallelizable but when I hear people grumble about how tedious web app development can be, I guess that would be the place to look." And you would probably be wrong, at least not exactly right.

And 'parallelizable'? TIL that's a word, kudos.
"whatever tech was "hot" 10-15 years ago is just now getting implemented"
Nah, it's here in the midwest just not as clustered as on the coasts. I worked on a web based application before a lot of the big sites out there existed (early 2k). I follow the trends and keep up to date on the technologies but I'm not surrounded by a ton of other software engineers in NE Illinois. Lot's of banking, teaching, and agriculture but not a hot bed of makers, app devs, etc. And some of it is due to higher education focus, universities tend to be spread out and not all have great tech schools. UofI did at one time, Andressen came out of there and I've worked with some grads that are exceptional devs. But that's 1 Uni in the state.
Good to see there is a push to reskill workers in areas where industry is dying out but this >>>
"The software firm Interapt has set up a training program in Eastern Kentucky to turn former coal miners and others with technical aptitude into software developers."
isn't that simple. While it sounds impressive to say they are creating developers with a training program, aka "Reskilling Americans for the Future!", it's not that easy. You don't become a developer by taking some training classes that most likely show you have to write HTML and maybe some basic logic. These will be more like programmers. Some will probably figure it out and go on to become devs, after finding bugs in the vendors applications or trying to debug code someone wrote 3 years ago and never documented. So invest in coffee companies and organic beef companies as these folks will be ordering americanos and the latest food crazes soon enough.
Awesome attitude they have there. A lot of what they complain about can be said about themselves, "small-minded, lack diversity". As for their "in-demand" skills, those will come and go. I hope they stay up to date on current tech trends. God this just drips of ignorance (their comments, not yours).
It depends on the vpn. I suspect in this case the answer is no, not really any better than https. If you want 'secure' vpn look for ones that log nothing. And use HTTPS and don't use their DNS. https://www.pcmag.com/article2...
Agreed. And banks don't want to pay for good IT folks. Been there and hated it. I worked with one dev who took smoke breaks in the server room. They found it funny that I told them it damages the equipment. God I'm glad I left. Now I have to deal with in-house finance group but I can tell them to shove off when I want to.
"Someone else's phone will detect your phone (by way of Bluetooth or WiFi "
Link? This also assumes bluetooth and wifi is turned on said phone.
"Buy a smart TV - it will note the presence of devices"
Nope. I'll stick with a dumb TV and use Kodi to stream from a NAS.
Link? Replacing an HD is as simple a process as pushing a reset button. The latter might be possible without opening but disconnecting and reconnecting an HD without getting your hands dirty sounds near impossible.
You might think they have an impact to sales and you'd be right. Except not in a negative way. It actually helps increase the sales for an artist. Most of the recordings are crappy and not many people really care enough about an artist to listen to a crappy version of their favorite song. It makes for a good story though when sales drop off for an "artist" who starts making crappy music and it doesn't sale anymore.
Awesome replies from folks. Having not mined bitcoin but having a basic understanding of it, isn't it cost prohibitive to mine coin on your own devices? Won't the cost of electricity for these devices be higher than the actual amount mined? I thought I read where it's taking longer and longer to mine.
I had a difficult time trying to explain bitcoin to a non-techie, such as how it's used and the value behind it. And it was a struggle beyond laundering money and that was a stretch. Isn't this all just virtual value? How does one go about cashing in a bitcoin to collect said $17,000? It's not like I can take my computer to the bank and show them I have x amount of bitcoin now give me some money.
1% of the 1% got their money from working hard (paraphrasing 'everyone else paying them'). Many of the 1%ers got their money from relatives. I didn't say all but a lot of them inherit wealth. You don't have to look around much today for examples.

don't give them any ideas!
Romana yes. Fred no thanks. Romana was smart and witty. Fred, I can't figure out if she's suppose to be smart and witty or just stupid. And it's too much of a play towards being 'hip'.

Nice one. I haven't heard that NY song in a long time.

Because I recall an article where some countries get around bans like this by saying it's for scientific purposes.
Canadian eh? How's the weather eh?
