I ran into this exact problem at a concert in Boston. I own a Panasonic Lumix FZ-15. It has a 12x optical zoom, and that makes for a pretty decent sized lens element (but it's NOT an SLR).
I was stopped no less than 5 times by band reps and bouncers, and even pulled out of the crowd to explain my camera. "Regular" cameras were allowed, but not SLR's.
It's actually closer to The Light of Other Days by Arthur C. Clarke. Superimposed reality (or, in the case of the book, superimposed images of the past).
However the concept remains the same. You're not paying for the movie, you're paying what amounts to a license to view it. Whichever company is issuing that license can set whatever limits they want on it.
If you dislike the terms of the agreement, you are more than welcome to purchase your own copy of the movie and watch it whenever and however many times you wish.
Blockbuster leases you tapes. They don't sell them to you (well, at least the rentals)
But it only gives WINDOWS iPod users a choice. The hypocrisy of Real's closed-source mentality is overshadowed only by their sleight of hand when it comes to "open source initiatives".
The bottom line is that Apple sells users The Whole Experience. From OS X on Apple hardware, to iTMS on Apple iPod's. They can control the whole line, therefore ensuring a better overall consumer experience.
While I agree with you on face, that the problem isn't inherent in the patch damaging clean installs of Windows, this still doesn't remove the fact that SP2 RC2 will damage a significant portion of consumer boxes.
Microsoft created a product that allows random spyware programs to, as you put it, corrupt beyond repair various DLLs and services. No OS should allow itself to be damaged so irrevocably far.
On point though, I think that it should frighten people from trying it. If your claim is that spyware is not a rampant problem, then you really do need to see the average consumer Windows box. If this service patch is not robust enough to deal with the fact that programs may have hijacked some DLLs (something that, as I said should never have happened), then it should be worrisome not only to the/. community, but the Windows community as a whole.
I'll second the bullshit to your bullshit. I have a 1ghz/12"/OS X 10.3. If i knock the brightness down all the way I'll get 6.5-7hrs out of it, 3-4 hours at full brightness or heavy load.
Maybe you need a new battery. Or turn off "Best Performance" under power management. Automatic works well, "Longest Battery Life" is a dream for word processing / casual web browsing. No noticable slowdown but the underclocked processor will coast for 1-1.5hrs more.
Something that is worth noting is the 'game' that Steve Grand helped create. The entire Creatures series (1, 2 and 3) was revolutionary in the AI-software industry. It melded a game that anyone could relate to, with some serious AI running in the background. The whole concept for the games was fascinating. It's a shame that his company has now gone under. The series in its hayday had a cult following, and I'm sure there are still some out there who play it.
MSN canceled DSL broadband services about a month ago to all users in the SBC regions. They also offered a nice "continuity deal" where they would switch you to SBC, and then asked if you would like to buy their portal services. Getting DSL through MSN was a life lesson in getting screwed.
I'm a BU student and I could just feel the campus bandwidth seizing up... it's gonna be a bloody night for the CS department.
CNN broke the story as well, but it seems Google has quickly fixed all the links.
The illusion of being backwater is now trumped by the reality of being underwater.

Needless to say, it annoyed me to no end.
Excelent read, regardless.
You owe me a new keyboard.

Don't worry. We know.
I don't know...I would be pretty emotional if I couldn't get my /. fix for the day.
Irritated sysadmin or lonely lurker?

Yeh, that whole SCO thing... kinda hard to miss on /.
American Express begins with 3, and Discover/Novus starts with a 6. /way too long behind a counter.
Man those games were obsessions...
