We have federal and state DNC (do not call) lists which are almost exactly the same thing. However, if you have an existing relationship with the company they can contact you.
This provision, which seems not well thought out (the cynic in me thinks it WAS in fact, well thought out) has been exploited quite a bit.
Because market cap is current_ask_price_per_share*number_of_shares_in_float.
So if their stock price is overinflated (your back-of-the-napkin math indicates you think it is, I think. I haven't done any research to have an opinion.) you end up with numbers like this.
I've yet to see a camera lens that actually looks like it could function as a firearm. Firearms and cannons need to be made of a single (or relatively few) pieces of thick metal that can contain an explosion. A lens is a puzzle of many different bits of thin metal and glass lenses. The two items probably couldn't look more different if you tried.
Well, certainly the analogy of telephoto lens to cannon was hyperbolic. I thought that much was obvious. The point was a lot of not-so-good-for-security items could be concealed inside a large metal tube with moving parts and motors, and it would seem obvious to anyone with a rudimentary education that these should be scrutinized much more than a 3oz toothpaste container.
If I can't try before I buy, I often just don't buy.
I've purchased far too many games (one of the Splinter Cell games comes to mind) that ended up pretty much just not working at all for my setup. After experiencing the issues, I tried 3-4 hours of walkthroughs I found on Google, on Ubisoft's official forums no less, involving registry hacks, editing ini files, etc. 100s of people posted that they had this issue. Ubisoft never bothered to fix it, after the game having been out for 2-3 years. None of the "fixes" worked. So as far as I'm concerned publishers/developers like this deserve to have their games pirated, at least initially. I don't agree with "stealing" (and I use that term improperly) software, but the way I see it - Ubisoft owes me a game. So heads up Ubisoft, I'll be pirating your next title I'm interested in. And telling my friends to do so, since surely all of the hundreds of people who posted on your forums about the same issue won't do this for lack of knowledge or resources.
I recently purchased the latest EA basketball game, NBA Live 2008 I think, and found out that it didn't support widescreen resolutions!
Why exactly are we not allowed to carry screwdrivers etc on board and then (I did this last week at DTW, Detroit) you receive a sharp metal knife and fork in the restaurant after security?
Obviously with a scary screwdriver, one could disassemble the conveyance mid-flight.
I have a Canon brand backpack that I carry a DSLR and 8 lenses in.. one of which is a 300mm fixed length lens, it's metal and about 10-12" long.
I've flown with this bag as my carryon and taken it through security 40+ times. Once, on a month long trip, I accidentally left a large (4" blade) pocketknife IN THE BAG for 6 different legs of my trip. That's right. A lens that could conceal a small cannon (and looks like one on the x-ray), and a knife big enough to carve it, in my carryon.
Theatre. God help us if someone with ill intent actually does decide to purposely board a plane with a weapon.
Come to think of it, that's a great idea for OS or FSF - create code for popular GPS devices, and then produce the code for audit when you go to court contesting a ticket, while asking that the cops produce the code off of their device!!
A variation of this has been done in a number of DUI/DWI cases. A number of defendants have demanded that the source for the breathalyzer be made available for review by the defense.
In the cases I'm aware of, the manufacturer has refused to release the source as their agreement/license with the relevant law enforcement agency does not provide for this.
I believe the outcomes have ranged, but in general this has been a successful defense.
Exact same experience for me at Sea World in San Diego. I refused and was told that it doesn't take a print, just measures the length and width of my finger. They "allowed" me to show ID, instead.
Are you just making things up as you type them out?
Whether or not a two-party conversation could be recorded with knowledge only of one of the parties has always been a state issue.
Here is a list of states that allow one party, or require two party notification. (Disclaimer: I'm not associated with this site, just found it on Google, and make no claims to its' accuracy.)
I logged in just to post this and save you a giant =( in the Spring.
FYI a T1 is something like 1.544mbps. 1544/8 = 193kBps.
I regularly sustain 1200kBps on my cable connection when downloading, and even average cable speeds are 600kBps (~5mbps) or better. So, whether you realize it or not, you're going to notice a significant reduction in browsing and casual download speeds.
T1s used to be the "rave" because of their increased reliability, and significantly lower latency than traditional consumer options. Today, though, not so much. I haven't experienced an outage from my cable ISP (Cox) in about a year, and my latency to my colocated box in LA (35 miles, 4 networks of peering away) is 15-25ms on average.
In regards to your comments about service availability: T1s are sensitive to distance just like DSL is, perhaps not to the same degree. I'm not sure of the specific ranges, but suffice to say you cannot get a properly performing T1 50,000 feet from your CO (the servicing Telco's "Central Office").
I think that localized anecdotes like this do a disservice to the larger issues at hand here. It is not as if your local Mayberry officers were asked by DHS to start harassing drivers. If that starts happening, then would be the time to start making such posts. Until then, it decreases the signal to noise ratio from claims made by persons concerned about encroachments on our personal liberties at home.
If you feel that their actions were in error, unethical, or illegal, send a letter to your state's Attorney General and also one or both of the sheriff of the county in question, the chief of police - depending on whether these were deputies or local police officers.
If they're not using parameter binding and/or properly sanitizing user input, this should return a different record (article in this case) than the original URL. - http://www.un.org/apps/news/infocus/sgspeeches/sta tments_full.asp?statID=105
I'm pretty sure this is just a state (not federal) law, but here in California when I take health insurance under a group employer plan I am not even asked about pre-existing conditions (which I have).
They're not allowed to refuse me based on pre-existing conditions.
Rain-X makes a spray that does this, but they also make a windshield washing fluid with Rain-X mixed in.
It works very well. Rain-X typically only lasts a few rains, in my experience. And I don't carry a bottle in my pocket to spray when it looks cloudy.
It may be easier or harder to find the fluid depending on where you live. I moved to Southern California 4 years ago, and I can count the rainstorms I've driven in on one hand. As such, I've never even seen the stuff (the spray or the fluid) in stores here.
You obviously didn't get the idea.. My problem is that the DX10 angle was played up so severely, and that the card's potential would only truly be unlocked in a DX10 environment.
Now NVIDIA is basically advising developers to proceed with caution in DX10 implementations.

P/E is really the only widely used metric we have for such calculations, though. And what should he have done, per your advice?
Maybe he could have divided by $years_until_company_fails or $years_until_purchased_by_SCO ?

I never post in these threads, but I thought this one was worthy.. I'm a fan of neither company, but if this was MS instead of Apple - zomg.

I showed your post to my brother-in-law who trains TSA personnel on how to use the x-ray stuff. He says you have to be lying about the knife
lol. I think if someone embarrassed the shit out of the quality of my work in what I do for a living, I'd brush it off as anecdotal or a lie, too.
Get real, this isn't Digg and I'm not 13.

This makes it a $60 paperweight for me.

I don't have information to give me reason to think that they wouldn't, but IANAL and this isn't legal advice.

to check for SQL injection like this on a website is to do something like this:
a tments_full.asp?statID=105%20OR%201=1
a tments_full.asp?statID=105

Before clicking on this article, I tried to guess whether the "Armageddon" tag would be in positions 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.
I picked 2nd. Slashdot has let me down.
This all sounds very interesting.. have any links to your games we could look at?
I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents and say this was the best content I've ever read on /. in coming here since it was launched.
I'd love to see more exclusive content like this, whether by CmdrTaco or other intelligent editors.
And having a similar job as you, CmdrTaco, I couldn't agree more.
And also, I have a site that is ONLY included in 302 redirects (a "bounce" domain for stats tracking) and it says we have 4x more reach than Slashdot.

Nice.
As an early 8800GTX adopter, I'd like to tell NVIDIA where they can shove this $700 paperweight..
