Keep making fun of Nokia ignorant yankees. One of the main reasons Nokia is non-existent in US is because it tried to stand up to the telcos and protect consumer's rights by not crippling the phones as per the request of your greedy-ass cellular carriers. I guess it won't be making that mistake anymore.

The 808 just goes to show that some companies still employ engineers instead of designers. I mean, Apple has to rip off that patented technology from somewhere. ( http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/apple-pays-up-licenses-patents-from-nokia/50558 )

As far as I can tell, the real problem with the American phone market (maybe even in general?) is corporations assraping the consumer, gouging for money on features (tethering, ring tones, incoming calls/msgs etc. etc.) that are free and open to use with any sane provider (or sane country, where the gouging is regulated). So no argument there.

But really, against apple, a cheap shot it was not. Your bookstore analogy does not hold water, because bookstores in general do not set themselves up to be guardians of people's morals. I use a Mac both at work and at home and was a fanboy when most people were predicting the death of Apple, but jesus fucken christ is it ever hypocritical to allow apps with recorded speeches of a fascist, and at the same time ban:

    • satire (http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/04/apple-bans-satire/)
    • flash

    • Dalai Lama in China (http://techie-buzz.com/tech-news/apple-bans-dalai-lama-apps-in-china.html)

They set themselves up for criticism because seemingly they apply a ban policy that is both very stringent and basically a "if we don't like it, we don't accept it". So without ever owing an iPhone or ever using the app store, going by the news coverage alone, Apple seems to like:

    • fascist speeches
    • farting sounds
    • making money

Ok, so they probably do not attempt to advance a fascist ideology, but it is totally perverted nonetheless. I'd get rid of my Macs if only they weren't so damn good products. Ironically, it is Adobe products on a hassle free Unixy platform that keep me locked to Macs. Luckily, with cell phones, there's ample choice.

Case in point: I'd like to get my kids' pictures taken. No print ad campaigns or web advertisements, just pictures of my kids, maybe myself and my wife. In the past we've used a place that takes really nice pictures, but they insist that the only way you can get their prints is to purchase print packages from them. I understand they are trying to make back their money invested in the initial sitting, but I can't wrap my head around how they are trying to take an old business model (selling photographic prints) and apply it to this new, digital age. All of their cameras are digital, but they won't sell me the RAW digital files, not for any price. However, they also delete the copies after 90 days, so they take digital pictures, print me out copies, then (presumably) destroy the originals.

I think photographers in large part are touchy about copyright issues because it's so easy to use a photograph and pass it off as your own or sell forward, etc. Also, if they sold you the RAW, then you could print it off to a hundred relatives, whereas now you need to buy the prints from them. But only giving 90 days to order as many copies as you'd like is very poor service.

I guess you could order a large print and then scan it back in. You could also see if you have anyone with an interest in photography in your circle of friends who would have a backdrop and some studio lightning equipment, or ask around in a photography forum like DPreview's Lighting technique.

Full time professionals may not like to negotiate flexible deals, but people who are just starting out taking portraits or doing it as a hobby would probably agree on a deal where you can use the results for non-commercial purposes as you will . Of course, It doesn't take a lot of equipment to get good quality portraits, but if the skill is not there, you won't be wanting to hang the results on your walls :-)

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Ok, explain to me this: there are a million variations of a joke around the 'net that are based on the same punchline: "For making an obscene clone fall". As a non-native english speaker I have no idea what's so funny about that, and nothing in the definition of the words obscene, clone or fall would seem to explain it. Searching for any combination of the phrase just yields the same old joke, repeated again and again, without any mention of what the origins are. Here's a star trek flavour of the joke.

Dr. M'Benga was experimenting with cloning alien species. His first experiment was a disaster; the result was ugly and obscene. He decided to get rid of it by jettisoning it out of the hatch. Unfortunately, Captain Kirk saw him do it, and now M'Benga is facing a charge of making an obscene clone fall.
There's even a completely unrelated joke with the same punchline:

For all those unfamiliar with Tenne-C, the comment delimiter is WHISPER. The computer stores all WHISPERed comments in memory, but the instruction execution unit can never quite decode them, so they are ignored. Some beta site users have reported an occasional problem with IBM clone machines. These machines may get slightly confused or mildly paranoid due to the whispered remarks in the background, but the effects are usually limited to an occasional mutterance printed on the display. Note that the optional extended obcenity instruction set should not be installed in clone machines. Should such a machine crash, you could be arrested for making an obscene clone fall.
Not getting the joke is drivin' me nuts.

The finnish standards association has suddenly terminated the contract of Lassi Nirhamo, the new expert of the IT standardization team. As late as last week, Nirhamo participated in the SFS press conference and was part in making the finnish stand on OOXML known at the ISO organization. Lassi Nirhamo tells to the Computer- magazine that he only got the information about the severance of his contract last thursday, after his four months probation was coming to an end. At this point the employer can legally terminate the contract without any cause.

Lassi Nirhamo himself wonders, that no reasons were given. "It's quite hard to say anything about reasons, when they haven't told me", says Nirhamo.

Lassi Nirhamo lead the OOXML- meeting in Finland, in which the finnish stand on the standard was decided upon. During the meeting, Nirhamo surprised the participants by announcing that he would speak as a private person for a moment, instead of being the chairman of the meeting. At that point he announced that he was against accepting the Microsoft standard. At the end of the meeting, Nirhamo put forward the opinion that Finland should abstain from voting.

The CEO of the Finnish Standrds Association, Pekka Järvinen says that the reason for ending the contract is lack of trust. "Unfortunately, during the probation period, issues came up, after which trust is not possible. I cannot comment further than this." Järvinen says over the phone.

SFS is now searching for a new expert who would be responsible for the many IT standardization related jobs, like continuing the OOXML- issue in the ISO organization next spring.
