It works. Just tonight on the news the reported a caddy SUV that had been stolen from a local dealership was recovered a few hours and 60 miles away by using OnStar. The SUV was equipped with OnStar with a GPS. The cops called OnStar and found out exactly where the SUV was.
You can still sniff broadcast traffic to see what other machines are on the network to try to access. Some windows machines are also used as routers (windows internet sharing, etc). Lots of home routers have only route to the internet as well, some of them have a hub with 4 jacks or so for the home network to plug into rather than a real switch. Heck, even our Netopia T1 router at work has a 4 port internal hub.
Listen mac, I'm tired of people insisting we editors take kickbacks from Apple. Just because people don't like our style, they are quick to jump on any additions we make to a post. I hope someday you change your tune.
Really? When someone recommends reading the bible, they are usually trying to change your entire life and belief system.
When I see a recommendation for a SF book on slashdot, I think someone is recommending some way to be entertained for a few hours. You must take your SF waaaaaaaaaaay too seriously.
On the other hand, if you use PostgreSQL, you simply hire someone to maintain the old version and backport any helpfull new features. And if you want to sell your code, you just bundle your own version of PostgreSQL with it.
Most companies I know barely want to pay enough salaries for the guys to write the code to use the database, now you want to hire an additional guy just to keep the Database software itself up to date? Most companies will just pay the license fee. Much cheaper. That one guy is going to cost, because you need someone very very goood. Someone writing bad code into the database software is a *bad thing*.
Exactly how do we get that 200 billion back? Got a magic lamp?
You think a simple switch of leaders is suddenly going to get rid of all the ill-will we have generated around the world? You are dreaming. Bush pissed away our international reputation, that will take many years to rebuild.
Did you see the CNN pictures with the helicopter right next the the remains of the capsule? The particles were stored on tiny tiny fragments of diamond and other minerals. If I had potential data, that cost many millions to get, sitting in tiny pieces parts on the desert floor broken up from the crash... I don't think I'd want a helicopter to land right next to it and potentially blow away part of my data.
Not exactly a huge list, is it? Capable of and reality of are two different things. I think I'll stick with the PC where petty much every game made in the last few years can do high resolutions.
As stated by the previous posters, you never ever want to turn on and run the computer as the suspect left it. They may well have included a logic bomb in the system to say erase the hard drive if a certain keyword isn't typed in within 30 seconds, etc.
The drives are always removed and accessed read-only from the forensic expert's own system.
I really doubt they are going to call hazmat for that. Liquid oxygen will boil away rapidly when relased from it's container. Yes, it might explode, but since it will almost certainly boil away before the hazmat team could possible 'clean it up' in some way, they are just going to tell you to evacuate the area until it boils away.
'Taking a stand' as an anonymous coward? How brave of you.
Not only did he avid the party of the service where he'd have to go to Nam, W didn't show up when he was supposed to to the champagne squadron. His commanding officer doesn't even remember ever seeing him. deserter isn't much of a stretch.
Wait, I thought this was slashdot, where folks always complaing that copying code isn't 'stealing' because the original guy still has it. It's only copywrite infringement.
I guess that only matters when it's not GPL stuff that's being infringed/'stolen'.
When faced with joblessness and possible homelessness a little DDoS doesn't look that bad.
It wasn't a 'little' DDoS. They had armies of zombie machines.
Let's see, not paying the rent, vs going to jail for several years. I'm sure with that nice criminal record, plus probably a court order not to touch a computer for several years after that, their job prospects are going to be oh so much better from doing the DDoS.... Where did you and they learn logic?
I don't feel bad sorry for them at all. I hope they drop the soap a lot in the shower while in the pen.

Mod parent up. I got into it a long time ago, and found out when you take trips to certain states/districts, leave the picks at home!
Not kidding that you are uninformed? I don't doubt it. 3com still sells a LOT of gear.

1,500 pictures in one sitting? I hope he cannibalized the battery too!

In three days we can get our 1000 dead soldiers back?
In three days we can have the 9000 wounded soldiers healed?
In three days we get our $200,000,000,000 back that we spend on a war based on a lie?
We get our international respect back in only 3 days? SWEET!
Oh yeah, sorry I got carried away. It turns out you are wrong. It will be decades before any of it is fixed, and some parts are unfixable.
First let's look here
Next let's look here
I count 4 games.
Wow. 4.
Not exactly a huge list, is it? Capable of and reality of are two different things. I think I'll stick with the PC where petty much every game made in the last few years can do high resolutions.
So in other words, no. You can't do it. Thanks for all the usefull input tho.
My 1200x1024 desktop monitor has just a bit more detail to the images than a TV set.... no, really!
And comparing the fine detail my 1920x1200 laptop display can show compared to what a TV screen can show is just a joke.
Console games are fun, but the graphics in no way are as detailed as what you can have on a PC. Sorry.
I'm not going to buy this 4 grand setup, but still, the people who do buy it want one very fast system, not two slower ones.
They need to, or you want them to?

Then there are always a few sickos who'd go for Mrs. Howell.

The Slashdot effect ate my webpage.

WHAT? Get him boys! Star Wars Nerds
Sorry about the mixup. Perry is on the other side of town and it's been a topic here lately, so I inadvertently typed that rather than Davis-Besse.
