It might not be as trivial as it seems at the first glance, but going for 300 miles on a tank is pretty easy, even my Euro-barge of a car can do it. The tank is around 60l, and fuel consumption at this speed should be somewhere below 12 l/100 km, giving me a range of 500km = 310 miles.
Huh? Maybe the actual car in they used for filming had an engine swap, but the regular DMC-12s had 2.8l V6 PRV engines.
Still, even with that shitty engine, there is no way it 88 mph is above its top speed. I drive a much larger and heavier car with less power than the DeLorean had, and I easily get it to go faster than that every day on my way to work. The problem might be in acceleration, as it would probably take it at least 1/4 miles (and 15-16 seconds) to get up to this speed.
IIRC, the rule is that the Kindle book can't be more expensive than the dead-tree version (or has to be below X% of the paper thing), rather than an absolute price ceiling.
Ireland does have the lowest overall tax burden in the Euro area and one of the lowest rates in the EU. So, you aren't being "progressive" enough by taxing a lot, therefore obviously you must live in a complete shithole.
Can't say much about the living standards as I haven't been there, but from what I've heard there's a pretty decent level of services available to people.
I fully agree with you there, however I'm afraid that you'll find that there's a large overlap between the people who support the drone idea, and the people who would say "well it's the law, you broke it, go to jail", no matter what are the laws and circumstances in question. Therefore, you won't convince them with an argument like this, as it would make it look like an even better idea.
Are you fucking retarded? I address this very issue in the last sentence of my post. Just because somebody else is as bad/worse is not an excuse for terrible behavior. Hell, let's all compare ourselves to Hitler, then we can get away with anything!
Mr Putin, I didn't know you had a slashdot account. How's the weather?
Are we talking about the same friendly Russia that genocides population of "unfriendly" countries and installs puppet governments there to further repress the people? The same one that provokes another country into an attack in order to create jus ad bellum for an invasion and then annexes parts of that country? The one that runs exercise invasions of its neighbor near the border and claims that nuclear weapons could be used preemptively?
Note that I'm not saying that Russians are bad people (though having lived in several CIS countries I don't fully buy your claim that people there are nicer to each other), we're talking mostly about governments and policy here. I see how you could be offended by the suggestion that somebody acting out against corruption behaves like a westerner, but objectively corruption is tolerated significantly less in western countries so it's not a completely wrong or unreasonable thing to say.
Also, please don't start with "But, but Bush! Iraq!" line, everybody knows about it, it sucks, but it does not justify anything.
So? Stallone is what, 64 this year? And yet he managed to slice and dice (as well as shoot, of course) through a whole bunch of people while looking absolutely badass in Rambo. Not to mention The Expendables, which looks even more awesome, if that is even physically possible.
As long as he has some nice shades, a pair of Berettas, and a cool coat, I have high hopes indeed for Chow Yun Fat, the patron saint of guns and kicking ass. Toothpick is optional, but John Woo is highly recommended.
Since the main villain of D9 was made to be a corporation, I'd say it would go over pretty well in China. I didn't get much of a anti-censorship or anti-government vibe from that film either, it seemed to be a pretty generic "evil corporation and its mercenaries" story. Quite like Avatar, now that I think about it.
I'm sure they're committed to industrial versions of Win CE, but the requirements for the consumer version are significantly different and have been rather neglected so far.
From the occasional bits of news I picked out so far, there's likely to be another WM6 point release around April-March, and WM7 should be out around September this year. Microsoft really screwed up by letting the development of their consumer phone OS slow down to such a degree, but it looks like they're finally picking up the pace.
Are you sure Stallone at any point in time played a British reggae musician? To be honest, I can't see that film being any good. Not that Judge Dredd was a masterpiece, but at least it was fairly entertaining.
First of all, as has been already mentioned, the terrorists will know that they're carrying a bomb, and that they are going to kill themselves in a few hours.
The second point would be that it's still possible to do a proper experiment. Divide the volunteers into several groups: group 1 will be told they are carrying a bomb, group 2 will be told that they may be carrying it, and group 3 will be told they aren't going to get it. Plant the bomb on some (but not all) of them or their luggage. Observe. Bonus: don't get your citizens shipped off to gitmo.
>I sincerely doubt the CIA is going to put terrorism intelligence-gathering on the back burner in order to free up resources for this initiative.
No, of course not. They'll just have some of the more prominent heret^Wunbelie^Wdeniers assassinated, set up a nuclear reactor in the arctic to melt a few glaciers, and then shoot down the weather satellites and replace them with their own birds. Once this is done, they'll go back to their usual routine of getting blown up by double agents, setting up death squads, and overthrowing unfriendly governments.
Even better, what about the fucking morons who attacked some NATO warships? To be fair to the pirates, some of the ships were French, but still that's pretty retarded.
Maybe you just suck at development. It does require a bit of extra effort of course, but it's still pretty easy to make WM apps work across resolutions. Even my shitty apps work fine in all standard resolution and orientation combinations, from 176220 to VGA and probably WVGA, which I haven't tested admittedly.

The thing is though, not everybody has an awesome projection system set up at home. Once you remove 3D and superior picture size and quality from Avatar, the film has nothing left to offer, unfortunately.
The only thing besides the visuals I heard positive comments on were some action scenes in the third act, but everything else is apparently rather mediocre. It's not even that the plot is simple, I certainly don't expect every movie to be some kind of mindfuck a-la Blade Runner. Something like Crank had a simple and absolutely ridiculous plot, but Avatar's is basically one huge predictable cliche, which also manages to be pretentious as well - it's white corporate imperialist oppressing local noble savages, and the hero decides to defect to the side which of course lives in total harmony (and connection, ugh) with the nature. Fuck.
The characters are flat and aren't developed too well (look, it's the evil corporate guy! And there's the crazy military general!), while the dialog is often just silly ("We're not in Kansas any more" FFS, James!). Why did they try to hid Sam's Aussie accent, couldn't he just happen to be from Australia, or live there with his father on a military base? Even the soundtrack is rather generic.
I'm not saying that the movie is terrible, in fact I think that films are a visual media and thus can be enjoyed as such. However I think that it's going to take much more than that to be the best sci-fi movie of the decade/ever, which is what many are claiming this to be. I'll probably go see it in IMAX, at the very least I'll see how the 3D tech works nowadays since I haven't seen a singe 3D movie yet.
I'm not actually disagreeing with you on any of this, and I completely understand why Broussard kept doing what he did, even if it wasn't the right approach. Obviously releasing a game on the Unreal engine a few months before UT2003 is supposed to come out with significantly updated graphics doesn't put your game in a very good position, but it's still a much better position than not having a game at all. For 12 fucking years.
This is it really, I was saying that if they released Duke and people thought that it sucked for whatever reason (it's really bad, too much hype, overshadowed by the next big thing...) and didn't buy it, that would only be a small setback for the company. Perhaps a larger one for Broussard's ego, but he'd get over it, and with the huge amount of cash left they could go on and make half a dozen of other better games.
Actually, there's another "OMG it's taking so long" title, Prey, and it was even mentioned in the fine article. It was finally released on the Doom3 engine a few years ago to mostly positive reviews, about 11 years after the announcement. Personally, I thought it was a good game, although not quite great. It had some very nice touches and ideas but a other areas brought it down by a few notches.
Anyway. My main point is that I disagree with your use of Daikatana as a counterargument. It was released after multiple delays and an engine change, and it did suck, no argument there. It was probably not as bad as is commonly believed, but as you mention the first level really does suck hard and is a particularly terrible choice for a demo. Even disregarding this level, it still didn't match the levels of hype surrounding it, Romero making you his bitch and all. Yet, despite all this, the game was released and brought in some revenue, around $10mil IIRC.
Ultimately, Ion Storm was fucked of course, but so is 3D Realms, and this is what I'm getting at. Practically anything would've been better than dragging the development out to 12 years. If they released early and the game ended up not quite as good as they/people wanted, there's ample opportunity for them to fix this with patches, add-ons, or sequels. Completely canceling the development would've meant no DNF game, but they could've revisited the DN franchise later and did something else instead. Even shutting down 3D Realms back then would be better than letting rot for 12 years, as this would leave the founders with plenty of cash, and the employees with fresh, relevant experience.
What happened instead served nobody. The employees were getting below industry wages, their knowledge was getting stale from working on the same thing for so long, and of course they were probably pretty demotivated during most of the time. The company and founders are out of significant amount of cash, and nothing to show for it. The publisher also apparently lost about $3mil. And finally, we, the gaming public, have nothing to play. The best thing we have is the 2001 E3 trailer, and pretty much any game would be better than that, outdated engine or not.
We don't really know how close they were to finishing the game, they could have easily fucked it up again. The new project manager seemed to have the correct attitude to get the job dune, or maybe they did the right thing by finally shutting everything down, who knows. So overall, this is just a sad (and very expensive) lesson for everyone.

My Creative Zen Xtra with the default EU firmware already limited output power years ago. Needless to say, I couldn't hear shit with my Etymotic in-ear monitors even at close to maximum volume (no, I'm not deaf). The regular shitty earbuds would probably be loud enough, except that in noisy environments such as public transport where the IEMs normally shine. Thankfully, reflashing the player with some other version of firmware removed this retarded limitation.
Another situation where unlimited output was useful is when I connected the player to inputs for other systems, like my 5.1 PC sound setup, or the car stereo. With other less powerful players (and I assume this one as well, prior to reflashing) the resulting volume is usually very low. Of course this also depends on the other amplifier as well, but still, the result is that with limited output I simply wouldn't be able to listen to my music in the car.
Unfortunately, it seems that the EU has ran out of farmers to subsidize a long time ago, and now they have too much time to waste on useless bullshit like this.

There are only a few cars that I know of that are still being made with the straight 6 layout, but they're all pretty awesome:
Q: So what is it that you do here?
A: Merchandising!
Come on, go easy on them. They were probably only trying to split off and sink California in the ocean. Nothing wrong with that.
