I've tested the same web-site on wired & 3G tmobile connection, & tmobile reduces the (byte) size of all image files on the fly in their transparent proxy. Might improve performance a tad! A proper test would use https as this cannot be interfered with in this way.
but until now I've been OK with their politics.

Yeah, really like that U2 song - it really captures the pain and frustration of a Sunday - the shops are shut, the kids are running round and you think to your self "Agh! Sunday, Bloody Sunday!".

Gotta say I regularly open log files up to 2 gigs in vim. It isn't amazingly quick, and I should probably use less or something, but its very tolerable. For normal sized files, it is really fast.
My main development editor is Eclipse, but vim is ace for everything else - and invaluable when you're ssh'ed into somewhere. It was a real shock for me recently to visit a site with Solaris 8, no vim, just the slowlaris vi. Nothing works properly! It just beeps at you.
We had interesting experiences of virtualising network services. Its all OK until you try to push lots of small interactions through your VM; then you start to push up against whatever way & freq the CPU is shared between VMs. Its less of a problem if you have more CPUs though.
Most of the IT depts I've worked in have a separate audit function, and external auditors visiting once a year. Sadly, they'd never spot any real problems in a million years as they just work down a tick list of identified risks and then give a seal of approval. I think the approval is what is really wanted; certainly nobody wants any expensive to solve problems highlighting!!
And while you're at it, how about making it possible to undo mods done via the ajaxy-dropdown thing. I've accidentally modded a few things the wrong way (doh) and the only way to reverse it is to post a pointless comment to the article...
The airports have started doing this too. At Liverpool John Lennon you can either go through the security queue, or pay for the 'Fast Lane' through security. Just wait 'til theres an emergency or a fire - "Could all passangers with Priority Emergency cards please make their way to the fire exits. Everyone else please wait in the lounge, you will be called soon".
From what I can work out, they only need a jury to decide if there is a dispute about the "facts" or if Novell were asking for punative damages. It seems that for the claims made, no facts are disputed, and Novell dropped their claim for special damages. All that left are decisions about the Law, and Judge Kimball gets to do that without a jury.
The facts of the case are the contracts etc. Both sides agree on the text of those, but the interpretation is a legal one and thats down to JK.
This is the whole argument that Stephen Hawkins uses to "believe in God."
Quite the opposite actually...
"You cannot prove that I exist", says God, "For Proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing!"
"Ah", says man, "But the planets lining up nicely like that so that we can see them is a dead give away isn't it. It proves you exist, and therefore by your own logic you don't. QED"
"Oh bugger I hadn't thought of that" says God and disappears in a puff of logic.
Indeed. Once we create something as intelligent as we are, it'll have the capability to be as self determined and as lazy as we are too.
"Hey Robot! Can you fix me some coffee"
"How about no, puny human. I'm busy looking at the pictures on ebuyer!"
Think twice? They won't even think once.
Reverse polarity, lower shields, increase tachyon bursts, invert phase shifting, and, of course, divert power.
No, no no, CROSS THE BEAMS !

Anonymous Coward: the gutless twat.

Thank-you. I just laughed maltesers all over my monitor.
Mrmr hasn't.
Nuke 'em. Again.
Sad thing is we bankrolled them while the Ruskies occupied and thereafter. Nothing like making a rod for your own back.
Back on topic - this is probably good news, as it smacks of desparation.

Not a bad idea. You'd have to provide some sort of exit strategy for those that see the light though - "I'M AN ATHEIST GET ME OUT OF HERE !!".
