Consumers want a Roku/Fire/Mythbox/AppleTV-like function that lets them play video on their TV with a convenient UI. They don't especially want a smart TV, although boy wouldn't it be nice if we could eliminate a box... dream on.
However TV makers, long under the knife of commodity bottom diving, would like to get a piece of the higher margin smart-device business. It is they who are forcing their lousy smartTV functions on us. We all know better: they are very slow, they end up being unsupported after a year, they rarely support all the apps that a user may want, and it takes 60s for your TV to "boot up" as a result of the cruft. They are forcing this crap on us in the hopes that we'll find it "good enough". It's not making them any money, so I expect it will eventually be dropped, I don't know anyone who bought a TV because of its "smart" functionality.
[Agent Smith]: I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your playlist, and I realized that you're not actually musical. Every musical person on this planet instinctively develops a natural rhythm, a selection of choices that are pleasing in one way or another ; but you listen to Justin Bieber. You move to an area and you listen to that crap until every nearby government agent runs away screaming in pain. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A terrorist. You are a terrorist, a cancer to this agency, you are a plague, and we...are the cure.
That would be some form of pagans, or other mysticism. Atheists wouldn't anthropomorphize physics, her death would at this point be attributed to the initial conditions that led to the big bang producing a few billion year sequence of events that would lead to her inevitable demise. Or, since we're talking about Stephen Hawking here, we just happen to be living in a universe where she has a stroke, there would be others in which she did not.
Or "Women & men feel the same way about the decisions certain women make", further "Men & Women both do not care about slut shaming enough to stop it".
The unfairness of the topic, I argue, is biology not some idiotic liberal arts topic. Phrase it this way "Willing heterosexual male prostitutes are largely unemployed and massively underpaid compared to their female counterparts" . It surprises no one at all, it is true, and it is unlikely that it will ever change no matter how much we support our young men in their career pursuits.
Make it the default setting and not the other way around.
I think there should be a physical switch to microphone and camera attachments on all products which carry them as integrated features, as a matter of law.
It is idiot conservatives who don't want changes to the tax laws who brought Tim Cook before congress to testify on the matter, trying to shame him in to doing something that he is not legally obligated to do, thanks to their shady tax laws. The liberals want them to pay more taxes, they don't care how it gets done, the conservatives don't want to change taxes because it works for their constituents, of whom most technology companies are not.
There comes a time when we need to divorce ourselves from political parties and demand a problem gets fixed. I am fairly sure that these five companies would LOVE to bring this money back into the US if they could do so cheaply. I am also fairly sure that we'd see more growth in R&D as a result, and we might also see a boost in tax revenue. If we do it properly, and not expect a soulless corporation to act outside of its own best interests.
My son learned to read at 3 on an iPad and my old motorola droid, my daughter is roughly in the same place. When my son walked in to the doctors office and read the sign "Laboratory Access for Technician Use Only" at the age of 4, refused to enter and the staff laughed hysterically, I decided "More good than harm". Sure, there's a million things I worry about and watch for. A lot of them I worry about in meatspace too. Parenting remains a requirement.
A lot of people on/. don't like smartphones and wish to project that on others in the form of FUD or strange old-fashioned values whose intent I do not understand.
It's like saying you should never engage with anything or anyone to the point where it would upset you to lose them. Especially for nerds, "just find some new friends" isn't nearly as easy as it sounds.
"Friends" who make you think about suicide, whether for real or for drama, are not friends. You must be rid of them. I get that replacing friends is very hard for some, me included. This isn't replacing friends, this is divesting yourself of a virus.
In some ways quitting is worse than staying. It's an acceptance that you lost, that you were bullied off the site and had to go to preserve your mental health.
No, I understand how it often seems necessary to continue on in spite of the opposition. If you can identify the problem, proceed ahead with your well being intact and try to make positive changes where you can, definitely that seems the best possible thing to do. However, if your solution is to cry suicide, or if you actually are planning to do so, you have already lost. Both are bad solutions, the former signals weakness which the bullies will destroy, the latter is worse than quitting from a selfish perspective. There is more to life than Wikipedia edits...
As a society, we are flawed. Examples of how fatally flawed we are extend well beyond wikipedia. The great leaders proceed on in spite of this, and sometimes, if they're really lucky, get shit done in spite of their detractors (who are often literally trying to kill them). Not every person is capable of that and there's nothing wrong with that, a society of the sort of single minded, goal oriented pricks would can proceed undaunted by the echo chamber of bullies and trolls would not be a great place to live. At the same time, we need our nerds, pedants and our scholars to try to keep the facts straight too, even if they do not always have (and probably would be less effective with) the same qualities that make for great leaders.
I think in general if people are making you want to commit suicide, you need to get away from those people. Do not expect those people to change their ways to save you, in fact, if on the internet, expect them to get worst.
It is interesting to see other perspectives of copyright law, and what 'the other side' might be thinking of issues. If she is successful in convincing the masses of her position, it will strengthen what many on/. believe are already overly broad, overly strong and otherwise misguided IP protection laws.
It would affect you, in that any entertainment you consume would likely become even more expensive. Also, if you use youtube, it might eliminate the reason most of us go there, and leave it as a venue for otherwise unemployed people to try to make a living on ad revenue hosting clips about nothing.
I'll get modded down to -1 for asking this because Slashdot users don't like answering important questions
No, you will get modded down because people think you are trolling.
Top people in Western society are completely replaceable
Perhaps the one thing our economic policy ensures: the wealthy are almost criminally worthless and the most replaceable of the lot, to the point of being huge boat anchors.
Knock yourselves out Al Qaeda, purge us of our parasites, that'll show us!
what happens if you kill the.01% and keep culling until it doesn't exist anymore?
The bottom line is that their assets will go to their next of kin, according to their wills, for the most part. If you go find all 7M.1%'ers you will succeed only in diffusing their cash a bit to a next generation, the top.1% becomes the top.25%. You will succeed in precisely nothing, and in another 30 years the dumb rich kids will have their breakfast eaten by the smart rich kids and we're back to square 1. Killing them isn't a solution. Kidnapping? Maybe, risky and impractical though.
If you really want to hurt the wealthy, raise inflation. A lot. This is very practical and something that we can cause to happen by voting certain ways or general civil disobedience. This will most hurt those living on investments, which includes a lot of.1%ers, but probably also mom and dad. But it will have the desired effect of wrecking much of the top.1%.
This case follows the proud British legal tradition (which you inherited) of proudly ignorant old dinosaurs ruling on stuff they consider it to be beneath them to understand.
This is clearly true, but one sided. A proud tradition of technical people, from ivory tower scientists to lowly plumbers is often to talk over the heads of the audience, or else to mix in some really terrible and confusing metaphors. Or both, because when you order pancakes, you want them entangled with bacon, at 350 Kelvin to ensure a flavorful protein denaturation.
The reasonable solution is to get more technical people through law school, but technical people frequently have a strong disdain for law or else don't want to let their technical skills go to waste while they learn about hundreds of years of human stupidity, greed, sloth, avarice, malice and precedents set for curbing such behavior therein. As a result, there's a strong shortage of capable people in the field.
Honestly, I think we made our beds, and now we're being forced to sleep in them.
Amen. Although I question what the value of elaborating G.N.U. adds to the conversation, particularly given that it is idiotic and essentially meaningless. The reason there is so much whimsy in the computer geek world is that many of us have a heightened distaste for social hang-ups that serve no useful function. If a noun is required to identify something, any one will do, provided it doesn't violate trademark . In this case, that noun is GNU, and if asked to elaborate the correct answer "It is just a name, what does Alsup mean?"
I win motherfuckers
You do, life is pretty much downhill from here for you.

The more people like him insult the people that support politicians like Trump,
I wish they'd put half as much effort into getting rid of Hillary, that's the absolute best way to make sure Trump never gets elected.

No problem, I just threw it across the room. It was very mobile for a few seconds, then it crashed. Windows Mobile died as it lived.
I'm confused about your distinction between government and corporations.
I do it for free.

I mean, here's some poor bastard who wants to talk about geometry, calculus and math, and those fucking NAZIs at the DHS want him?!
What if he wanted to talk about trigonometry, or would that be going on a tangent?
Talk about an anti-science society!
I thought we were talking about math, this is kind of an orthogonal comment.
I think in general if people are making you want to commit suicide, you need to get away from those people. Do not expect those people to change their ways to save you, in fact, if on the internet, expect them to get worst.

Texas yo, we drive over them only after having shot them in self defense a few times.
Just sit back and enjoy the show.
Hopefully in their teenage dragon years they realize their government is a shitshow and they throw it out with yesterday's trash.
How can you tell them apart from Texans? The reason we drive such big cars is so we don't have to worry about what we run over when we change lanes.
I mean they could raise a fortune just ticketing double parked cars in Main St. Flushing, why be criminal about it all?
