  10. Re:IE only sites on 10 Percent of UK Sites Incompatible with Firefox · · Score: 1

    In the later case, of developing in IE, and not checking with Firefox, does anybody know what the most common things that break are?

    Mostly it's javascript based sites, that rely on javascript to display the contents of the page. These sites aren't just broken in Firefox, they're often broken in any browser other than IE and Netscape 4. Yes, that's right: Netscape 4. The crap 7 year old browser that has a market share of probably 0.3%. Look at the code for one of the sites in this article. You'll see things like:

    if (document.layers) {
    ...
    }
    else if (document.all) {
    ...
    }
    //do stuff

    For the non-programmers, that's saying "is it Netscape 4? Well if it's not, it must be IE" and not checking for anything else. This is because these people learned to design web sites in 1996, and haven't taken the trouble to update their skills. Any "web developer" should seriously question their sanity when they make a conscious decision to support a dead 7 year old browser.

    Seriously, though -- why do people still pirate MS products when you can have the free (better?) alternative operating system, office suite, e-mail client, yadda yadda?

    My answer? Because the last time I tried installing Linux (about 2 years ago) I spent 3 days trying to get my sound card (a SoundBlaster 16) to work.

    I love open source; I use Firefox and Thunderbird, OpenOffice, Gimp, Ethereal, MySQL, Apache, PHP, all on a daily basis. But don't ever expect me to give up Windows (unless it's for OS X.) It's so very usable, something Linux is still lacking.

    Someone needs to do for Linux what Firefox did for Mozilla; until it's reliable and usable, no amount of marketing will sell it.

    BTW, I paid for my copy of Windows 2000. Second-hand, but I still own that MS CD, along with CDs for 95 and NT.

    I had no idea things were that way in the US, in fact I can't imagine how they could be. I know it was like that back in the CDMA days, but now that everyone's going GSM, just take your SIM card and put it in whatever phone you want, provided it's unlocked. And that's a trivial matter these days.

    I can see the carriers refusing to bundle the phones with contracts and whatnot, but if someone wants to buy it I can't imagine they could stop them from using it on their network. Why don't Apple/Motorola just release the phone, let people pay money for it (they will) and screw the phone companies!

    You lease a POTS line like a T1, which will give you 24 voice lines, or an E1 which will give you 32. Plug that into an interface card in your asterisk server. Those T1 lines will come with phone numbers for incoming calls as well. That's all you'd need to get a basic VOIP company up and running.

    As far as how small a scale you can do this, it's about $1000 (Canadian)/month for a T1 in a data centre -- but I'm sure people still do fractional T1, don't they?

    As long as nobody wants to call outside the local calling area of your server, you're set. Otherwise you'd need to set up servers elsewhere or make arrangements with someone else.
