Okay- I must be a Halo fanboy. Although, that sounds kinda gay, so maybe a 'fanman'.
Being the fanman that I am, of course I don't see how Halo can possibly be 'overrated'. I've played just about every single FPS on the PC, and I would still give Halo a 9.5 or above. Bordering on 10- the only problem I ever had was when the thing finally ended. Crap...shit...fuck...but now I get to play it again on a harder level. I never had that desire on a PC game- or at least not past the first mission or so, when I realize it's too damn boring.
I'll say it again...I don't care how great a mouse and keyboard are- my couch is more comfortable than my office chair.
There are certain things that can be said again and again, without being overly redundant.
I was a huge fan of the first Tecmo Bowl. It truly was an absolute masterpiece. The sad thing is, the ONLY time I ever got to the final game, my wife (ex now...) actually came out and unplugged my Nintendo, because I had been playing for like 15 hours straight.
So- keep on talking about Tecmo, because it really is one of the great ones. I don't know if I would play it today (some things are best left in the fog of my past) but I agree that no football game comes close.
There is something to look forward to though. If you have played NBA Street Vol. 2, you know how awesome that is. Soon, they will have NFL Street. No kicking, first down is 'at the trashcan', etc. etc. No wimpy QB's- because they gotta play some defense too. Maybe this can finally unseat Tecmo as my favorite sports game ever. Madden just doesn't do it for me.
But people don't want that anymore. Big budget games CAN be so much better. Yes, there is a lot of big budget crap too, but most of the really good games have really good budgets.
I want good voice acting. I want gameplay that has been tested like crazy, and tweaked to (hopefully) perfection. I like eye candy, and I like big-time on-line support that works.
So, I wouldn't say that the game studios are all money-grubbing pigs- doing it for the money, instead of the art. I would say that most of them are just responding to the consumer demands. And it takes big teams, and a lot of talent, and a lot of time to create a game now.
Warren Spector said it himself- that the game was going to be based on the Xbox capabilities, with a little bit of resolution enhancement on the PC.
Play through Halo one time, and you will probably get used to the controls. A mouse and keyboard IS better, I admit. But, the combination of a mouse/keyboard and my desk/workchair is not better than a console controller and couch.
Plus- my Xbox has never crashed, games will frequently crash on my computer- which sucks.
So- I'll buy the Xbox version - doesn't mean you have to- but there are those of us out there who would rather play games on our consoles.
XBox DVD playback is pretty good. I am not a videophile, or audiophile, but I personally can't see any problems with it at all. Best of all, I've never had a skip, or hiccup on it at all. This is far better than my early generation DVD player, or my fiancee's el-cheapo player. I used to avoid renting DVD's because of skips- but that is a thing of the past now that I use my Xbox
Frequently it gets mentioned that the DVD playback ability costs $30- that is true. But, you don't need to buy any memory cartridges, so it comes out even in the 'necessary accessories' category.
But, if you are going to knock other people's grammar, make sure you can spell 'throw' right. 'Through' is close, but they mean different things, and actually don't even sound the same.
Umm..it's pixels on the screen. Little cartoons running around when I push my controller one way or the other.
It isn't real.
Chunky Lee Chong is not a real person- but if he were, and he were in charge of a crime syndicate, running out of a noodle shop, then he probably deserved to be run over and gunned down.
I would choose an X-Box over a PC...and stop calling me Shirley.
I bought GTA 3 for my PC, and I didn't like it. The controls for driving were horrible, and it crashed a lot. Plus, the graphics weren't all that great for the PC. I will be buying a copy of the combo pack for my X-Box though.
Yes, I would much rather use the console controllers, not have to worry about crashes, and bring the pimp-slappin into my living room, where it belongs.
I did get a really nice poster from the PC version though.
I went to the article...I saw a lot of neat little graphs.
The conclusion was: To be involved in defining the future of democracy, governance and public work at the dawn of the information-age is an incredible opportunity and responsibility. With the intelligent and effective application of ICTs, combined with democratic intent, we can make governments more responsive, we can connect citizens to effectively meet public challenges, and ultimately, we can build a more sustainable future for the benefit of the whole of society and world in which we live.
It sounds eerily reminiscent of many dotcoms who tried to get into the government services market. There's a good documentary about one of them.
Any time I was referring to 'race', I was referring to the 'human race'. The only time I mentioned different ethnicities there, was when referring to the system that was in place in India for many many years- the caste system.
In my understanding, the caste system forbid people to marry/have children (breed) outside of their caste. In this way, each caste would have a separate gene pool that would not mix with others- possibly in time, it would create people who looked different, depending on their caste.
If you feel this is racist, then I think you are probably the type of person that looks for racism in everything. The caste system was a fact- I was merely commenting on some of the possible outcomes, and wondering if the same thing could happen here.
My guess is that over 1/2 of those current subscribers just haven't figured out how to cancel the automatic payment from their credit card.
I paid for a few extra months because I kept forgetting to remove it...and 'Sims Online' was constantly within my radar. I would guess that many parents out there who subscribed for their kids just forgot about the whole thing...but it keeps charging them every month- but the kids aren't playing it.
The fact that you don't own a TV, and don't see a reason for one- means that nobody gives a damn about your opinion on this subject. Please go find a thread about some stupid way to protect your rights by not agreeing with an EULA, and making a nuisance of yourself.
Additionally- the first respondant to your post cracked me up with his beret comment. Mr. AC, you should stand up and have yourself counted- I love you man!
Well, the chicks in the picture (for those who at least clicked on the article) are total dykes. The one in the background is a bull-dyke, who wants girls to get into the 'agressive' games (read: she leads an all dyke UT 2003 clan). And the one if the front says:
"People reveal who they really are when they can try things in a safe environment."
Meaning, we need to have more pro-lesbian games.
I hope Outlaw Volleyball counts.
Seriously though- I don't feel I have much in common with the two in the picture, I hope they are not coming up with some sort of policy whereby they determine which games we get. "Ohh...he just shot that defenseless civilian, instead of making him lose health, we should force him to read, and sign, a statement knowing that he understands that violence is bad, and he should never hurt other people."
Okay...maybe it is because I know two chicks that look just like those, and I am applying their personalities here...but if it were up to them, men would be in cages...
Well, this is the exact product I have been waiting for. I'll be buying one.
I know that there are similar products out there, but to be honest with you, I don't really feel like researching them, to find out which ones would work with an Xbox. So, I'll take the easy route, and buy the one with the Xbox logo. And no, I'm not stupid, or poorly informed- I deal with computers about 10 hrs a day...that is why I don't want to spend time on this!
Secondly- don't think that this will be purchased mostly by parents, for their children. The Xbox has the 'oldest' demographic out of all the consoles. I'm 35, and I'll be buying it for myself.
I actually remember that comment about CDs, and 2X being enough for anyone.
Sad to say, I thought you were serious too (I did not mod you up though). There are a lot of people who take pride in still having a 486 (or 386, or lower if you want) that still functions.
On the other hand, I am one of those people who will buy the 52x over 48x CD drive, even if it is a little bit more expensive. Yes, I know I will never see the difference...but it just gives me a great deal of satisfaction knowing that I got the best thing I could have.
If we did that, then parents would create an uber-MIT or uber-Harvard.
It is part of our biological makeup, to ensure that our own children get every advantage possible.
That is why you want to mate with someone healthy. That is why you have a drive to make sure your children are safe.
Having our progeny have every possible advantage ensures that our bloodline will be carried on. That is the fundamental desire of every species on earth. That is what ALL of this comes down to.
It's just something that happens as a parent, and something that has been re-inforced through evolution. If you DID'NT wan't the best for your kids, they would die of starvation, or neglect. Then, nobody would carry on your genes, and future generations would not have to deal with you.
Of course, in modern society, the gene pool does not go through nearly as much cleansing. Crack-addicts can have kids, and the state will take care of them. People can sit around all day watching Maury, and they can still be 'successful' genetically.
So what is the future of our race...really? Will we have cataclysmic event, which brings us back to a time where people do die, if they aren't smart/fast/strong enough?
Will we someday mutate into to races? I don't see this happening, because that welfare queen might have been attractive enough at one time to have mated with a non-fat/ugly/stupid person.
To stay on topic...don't send all of the software jobs to India. Or...is that just natural selection at work? Are we being told we are too lazy, and can no longer support ourselves? Are we creating a consuming class (America) and a producer class?
I wonder which level in the former caste system does most of the programming in India- is it near the top, or near the bottom?
Hmm...the Caste system sounds a lot like the earlier part of my post...no breeding across castes though. Did it create people who were physically identifiable to the caste?
Okay- I must be a Halo fanboy. Although, that sounds kinda gay, so maybe a 'fanman'.

Too much vicodin and caffeine...
Okay...BSD comment aside-
Nobody is posting here because the original story is about two incongrous subjects.
Xbox
Japan
If you care about one, you probably don't care about the other. (Reason for crappy sales?)
It's like opening a Vegemite shop in the US. We have peanut-butter...we don't want vegemite.
The Xbox isn't popular in Japan.
Dried seaweed 'treats' aren't very popular in the US.
Maybe we're different.?
"If the gamer knew whats good for him, hed pay 1$ extra for each game just so it could be ported to linux and mac."
Wow- stunning statement.
So, for me, someone who runs Windows, and has an Xbox, I should be willing to underwrite development on plantforms that I never use?
And, by moving away from DirectX, it will make it more difficult to port games from the PC to Xbox,a nd vice versa?
Is this the kind of "if you know what's good for you..." that is a veiled threat, or will I actually benefit in some manner?
This actually makes a lot of sense.
Both companies are aiming at the same 'simplistic' demographic.
"We make games that are easy to understand, and you can pick up quickly"
"We get you on-line, no matter how dumb you are"
People always complain that the Xbox and PS2 are less 'accessible'. So I think that Nintendo has found a good partner.
I don't know if it is "all about the money".
You can still make games cheap, or even free.

Good point-
Exactly...with you and your friends, it is the "GC is the first thing that is turned on."
When my girlfriend comes over, it isn't the Xbox that is the first to get turned on...that's for later.
Just a different demographic I guess.
XBox DVD playback is pretty good. I am not a videophile, or audiophile, but I personally can't see any problems with it at all. Best of all, I've never had a skip, or hiccup on it at all. I hate grammar nazi's..
But, if you are going to knock other people's grammar, make sure you can spell 'throw' right. 'Through' is close, but they mean different things, and actually don't even sound the same.
And you see Grand Theft Auto as 'reality'?
Umm..it's pixels on the screen. Little cartoons running around when I push my controller one way or the other.

Killing bitches on a video screen...
Or killing millions of people throughout history because of fairytales about someone named 'Jesus'.
I guarantee that more people have died because of 'our (yours, not mine) Lord' than any vice on this planet.
Religion is the biggest killer of all time- videogames have only pushed a few lunatics over the edge. God seems to do it on a dialy basis.
