  1. Cliff Richard and the Shadows. on 'That's All Right' Soon To Enter UK Public Domain · · Score: 2, Funny

What is truely scary is finding out that the recordings of Cliff Richard and the Shadows will be entering the public domain pretty soon.

Please! Please EU! Extend copyrights to death plus a 1000 years ASAP!!!!

Unless the Delaks have learnt to navigate stairs is there any place for them in a 21st century sci-fi?
Or are all the future city councils so pc that all stairs have been banned and replaced by ramps?

  5. Mircosoft and CPU licensing. on Intel to Dump Pentium 4 in Favor of Pentium M · · Score: 2, Interesting

If Intel is moving to low power multicores chips what will this mean in terms of os licenses that limit the number of cpus which can be used at any one time such as MS? Will the likes of MS relax the licensing terms so that this type of technology will take off or will they use it as an excuse to make more money and kill off demand for multicore cpus? I wonder if Intel has discussed this with MS?

  6. Disposable does not equal cheap. on Disposable Cell Phones Arrive · · Score: 2, Insightful

Great I hope the smart states slap a hefty sales tax on these things to cover the cost of disposal say 100 dollars per unit, doesn't seem so cheap now huh? After all the company positively encourages the user to dispose these things.

No mention of the initial up front costs of the unit.

The call rate will certainly be higher to cover costs and make a profit, they do intend to make a profit right? Or are they hoping to pump the share price and make money by selling blocks of shares?

No sms text, means this tech is already dead in Europe and the rest of the world.

Anonymous mobile phone purchase is illegal in some countries, ever try buying a legal phone in France without ID?

Just who is the target customer? Business travellers? Poor students?

What's the point of a mobile if you can't be sure that the other party will still have the same phone number after a week? Who would you rather do business with e.g. on ebay?

  7. The Real Question People Should Be Asking. on RFID Industry Confidential Memos · · Score: 4, Interesting

When will it become government policy to rountinely RFID tag people?

It's a common procedure for tagging dogs here in the UK especially if you wish to take your dog abroad. It's been used successfully in finding the owners of strays for some years now.

Perhaps the tag will be embedded under your skin, as part of a passport application, or maybe embedded into a hip bone or the skull at birth.

We already externally tag offenders on home curfew, why not go the whole hog and attach a RFID tag to the stem of the brain, try removing or microwaving that you sucker!

  9. SALVAGE SALVAGE SALVAGE on Novell Nterprise Linux Services Announced · · Score: 3, Informative

The only good reason to use Novell is it's BULLET PROOF file system with proper file access control and the excellent file undelete utility SALVAGE though other companies have caught up since the last time I used Novell as a Sys Admin in '98, I've yet to see any other x86 network OS with a standard utility like SALVAGE which can undelete files regardless of the application which deleted them.

It's worth the thousands it cost for the licenses when the research dept deletes a days worth of work which hasn't been backed up yet while tidying up their server files.

Try undeleting a file on an NT server which was deleted by a DOS client or a Windows application file browser... ouch painfull.

Those files in the NT recycle bin are only there because the app e.g. Explorer put them there not by the OS.

But what they don't tell you is the call will last 20 mins and that you have only won £5 and just as you scramble for pen and paper randomly cut you off before giving out their address to send your claim which would probably take 12 months to process in which time the prize company will go tits up after having been fined by the local telecom regulatory body and don't expect any sympathy from your mobile phone company they'll fight too and nail from giving you back a refund after all is was a premium rate number you silly dimwit

  12. VAT Competition in the EU. on U.S. E-Commerce Sites To Collect EU VAT · · Score: 1

It's interesting to think that in the future when online shopping is the primary method for purchasing goods and services, EU companies will relocate their businesses to the lowest VAT rated country to stay competitve. This can already be seen happening in Luxembourg.

Perhaps that will encourage EU governments to drop VAT rates to compete with the likes of Luxembourg.

Or more likely bring up the ugly subject of tax harmonistion between member states.

  13. And how many phones are carried on a flight? on Research: Mobile Phones Disrupt Aircraft · · Score: 1

Mobile/Cell phones already cause interference to everyday domestic equipment. Try using a landline telephone or listen to a radio next to a mobile you'll hear clicks and buzzing as the mobile seeks out a base station.

Around 70% of the people I know have a mobile phone.

Mobiles increase their signal strength to compensate for poor signal quality, such as when you're five miles from the nearest base station a la 30000+ feet.

A flight with say 300 passengers carrying 200 mobiles in a concentrated environment all trying to communicate with a base station is simply not good.

Until flight equipment is certfied as being completely resistant to the interference generated from portable comms, keep them switched off.
