One thing I will agree with her on (if true) is that if the kid was stupid enough to leave his account logged in on her computer then he got what he deserved. I don't know too many people that haven't been the victim of leaving their account logged in only to find someone else "updated" their status for them.
I guess I need to make myself very clear since you seem to believe you are intellectually superior to those around you. I will try to use the small words that you learned in 5th grade.
The joke might have been funny if you had not screwed up (misquoted) the actual quote.
"I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened."
If you want to get technical about it. The exact quote is: "I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened."
Couldn't be that a company as large as IBM might have multiple departments/divisions that don't really know what the other is doing. Nope just an evil corporation being hypercritical.
Their website (not the news story) just points out the OS'es that could run on their machine. However I don't think they install anything on the system itself. Under OS X, it points out that you will need to go to the Apple Store yourself like they do and links to articles on the devices needed to get around the protections.
If you have a 401K, stocks, or any other investment account then you might want to reread your statement with "me" instead of "them". The fact is most middle-class Americans have investments in these mega-corporations and profit from their "greed".
I would propose that in fact, it is this ever more difficult quest to show stock-holder gains that lead to these things that you hate so much. However if a company doesn't do this things, then the stockholders sue saying that the CEO's were not doing their best to maximize profits.
I never remember the constitution stating that the government was responsible for the health of the populace. Last I checked it said they were just to protect the populace from foreign (and domestic) invaders and make sure trade and commerce is possible (and regulated) between states.
That is part of the problem, the Federal Government (States and Citizens too) forgot that anything not specified as their responsibility under the Constitution was the responsibility of the State Governments.
Sure, but remember. That's your fault. You've created a party and media empire that only exists to say everything Democrats do is wrong. The only way to get anything done is not to tell Republicans about it. Ball's in your court. Start acting like adults and you'll be treated like them.
Democrats already treat you far better than you deserve.
Yeah, I know it's fucking insane to try to get some work done. We've been trying to pass this bill since the first day of the Obama administration. I think at the one year mark is a perfectly acceptable point to say you're gathered enough input from obstructionists, and you're done listening to what they have to say.
And don't give me this "breaking procedural rules" bullshit. Your party is the party of breaking procedural rules and rewriting the entire congressional rule book anytime you are in power. Turn-about's fair play.
Um, first off I am not a Republican and never would want to be considered one (nor am I Democrat). Both parties are corrupt and my opinion need to be challenged by a strong third party.
Secondly, last time I checked both parties have their set of media outlets firmly in their own pockets. As I have said elsewhere, it is sad that the last place I find semi-unbiased news coverage is on NPR.
Finally, do you realize how much you sound like a three-year old when you make a claim like your last paragraph? Just because someone else is willing to stoop to the lowest level doesn't mean that you hop right into the gutter with them. But that said neither party is really in a position to claim the moral high-ground.
One extra note, I don't recall the Republicans ever telling the public that the procedure would be televised, open and not behind closed doors.
It is very hard to claim that someone is trying to work with someone else when they create the bill behind closed doors with sweetheart deals and then rush it to the floor for a vote before anyone can read the amended thing. On top of that when someone from the other party asks the bill to be read as part of the Senate rules (granted also as a stall tactic), the leader of the party breaks the rules in stopping it. You cannot break the rules of the Congress and still claim to be trying to play nice.
As I see it, the Democratic Party is hell-bent to shove this health-care bill down everyone's throat. The most amusing thing I saw in this process was during the meeting/lunch with the President one of the Republicans validly pointed out the fiscal flaws in the bill and the response was simply "Were not going to talk about that".
I like your comment, including your anecdotal stories. However, here is a recent news article referring to a study that points to exactly the point I made. US Doctors over test and in turn get to bill insurance companies for things that were unnecessary. http://www.baystatebanner.com/Print?page=Health24-2010-03-18
Yes I do, because anything the government does is not done well. However, I also believe that insurance agencies should be forced back into being non-profit entities. I think the fact that the insurance agencies have become more concerned with profit is a large part of the issue.
But then I also think part of it is doctors willing to test everything under the sun when not really necessary to collect fees an issue, as is those that go to the ER for aspirin. Going to socialized medicine really doesn't address those issues now does it?
It still drives me nuts when people point to that case as evidence that our legal system is broke. It is broke, I don't deny but that case is not one to use. Here are some facts about that particular case and why the jury awarded such a large fine (that was later reduced by a judge): (from http://lawandhelp.com/q298-2.htm in case you want to look yourself).
McFact No. 1: For years, McDonald's had known they had a problem with the way they make their coffee - that their coffee was served much hotter (at least 20 degrees more so) than at other restaurants.
McFact No. 2: McDonald's knew its coffee sometimes caused serious injuries - more than 700 incidents of scalding coffee burns in the past decade have been settled by the Corporation - and yet they never so much as consulted a burn expert regarding the issue.
McFact No. 3: The woman involved in this infamous case suffered very serious injuries - third degree burns on her groin, thighs and buttocks that required skin grafts and a seven-day hospital stay.
McFact No. 4: The woman, an 81-year old former department store clerk who had never before filed suit against anyone, said she wouldn't have brought the lawsuit against McDonald's had the Corporation not dismissed her request for compensation for medical bills.
McFact No. 5: A McDonald's quality assurance manager testified in the case that the Corporation was aware of the risk of serving dangerously hot coffee and had no plans to either turn down the heat or to post warning about the possibility of severe burns, even though most customers wouldn't think it was possible.
McFact No. 6: After careful deliberation, the jury found McDonald's was liable because the facts were overwhelmingly against the company. When it came to the punitive damages, the jury found that McDonald's had engaged in willful, reckless, malicious, or wanton conduct, and rendered a punitive damage award of 2.7 million dollars. (The equivalent of just two days of coffee sales, McDonalds Corporation generates revenues in excess of 1.3 million dollars daily from the sale of its coffee, selling 1 billion cups each year.)
McFact No. 7: On appeal, a judge lowered the award to $480,000, a fact not widely publicized in the media.
McFact No. 8: A report in Liability Week, September 29, 1997, indicated that Kathleen Gilliam, 73, suffered first degree burns when a cup of coffee spilled onto her lap. Reports also indicate that McDonald's consistently keeps its coffee at 185 degrees, still approximately 20 degrees hotter than at other restaurants. Third degree burns occur at this temperature in just two to seven seconds, requiring skin grafting, debridement and whirlpool treatments that cost tens of thousands of dollars and result in permanent disfigurement, extreme pain and disability to the victims for many months, and in some cases, years.
Amish also can have special battery operated Computers that let them do excel, word, etc. They also can use battery operated signals, and normally have a generator in the barn. There is also a trend for them to have a phone installed outside the house (in inconvenient distance away) with voice mail for emergencies, and Amish communities are probably the one place in the US that phone booths still make profits.
The issue isn't electricity, it is having the world outside their community intrude on their lives. In that regard, there are many times I agree that my family could use less outside influence in the evenings and more time as a family.
So like a lot of 'green' things they are designed to save you money in the long run. Like paying out your ass for CFL bulbs or installing a windmill. Granted that's over 29,000 floods you'd need to recoup the eighty grand, it's a bit misleading to say it's more expensive. The other thing to look at is whether or not the eighty thousand is worth the health of your fans (you know, where you get your revenues from). I mean, fume free might not mean much to me but to the six year old kid suffering from asthma in the front row?
I am pretty sure that it will be a long time before the Olympic Committee manages to run their ice resurfacers the 29,000 times needed to break even.
Depends on your point of view. Government raising taxes (or borrowing on our kids' future) because they cannot manage the money we put in their trust seems to be stealing to me.
While I feel sorry you had such a bad educational experience, anecdotal evidence doesn't really outclass scientific studies. The facts are most children that are home-schooled turn out fine. Just like most children can turn out fine with public education (just apparently slightly less intelligent, or perhaps more educated in pop culture).
Obama isn't a leftist, he is a Progressive much as he frequently calls himself. His goals are founded in the activism that gave birth to the movement, and his (and other progressive's) agenda would be to force those goals down the public's throat whether they want it or not.
People need to wake up and realize there is more than Left, Right and Center in politics.
I see this trend also, it is almost like as a society we have turned on the herd mentality full blast. Either you are with us or you are against us. It is a sad day when I find myself listening to NPR of all places to get semi-balanced reports on stuff (even they tend to be slanted on certain issues). At least I know there I will hear stories on large variety of topics and usually with a representative of each side presenting their view of it.
It saddened me a little today when they were doing their report on the response to the State of the Union the positive thing they suggested everyone remembers is that no one booed the president.
This is what happens when a government runs the value of their money to the ground by over-spending/borrowing. The purchasing power of the average family goes down and they start making tough choices about where their money goes. Things like overpriced cable television, unnecessary luxury trips, entertainment purchases (books, movies, music), and other non-essential items don't get purchased. Instead of the Corporations facing this reality and coming up with quality products that have value, they instead blame 'piracy' for their woes.
Sorry Corporations, food and gas to get to work is more important than a $30 Blue-Ray movie, especially when I is delivered a few weeks later at my door via my Netflix queue. Used video games are more attractive (even bargain bin ones) than $60 for the latest greatest, and if I am desperate I can rent for $3 at Hollywood Video. Radio is free and generally will play something worth listening to, so that song better be really good for me to spend even $0.99 on it (Ke$ha need not apply).
These days I use the library, netflix, rentals, borrowing, ebay, or any other legal means to save a buck on entertainment these days. Even if that means just playing cards with the family or going to the park.
People forget that originally the Wii was only supposed to have an SD Card slot, the "Menu" was actually a disc that shipped with the system. So alot of the features that everyone complains about not having is partially due to things being tacked on near the end of development.
Nintendo didn't foresee the demand for WiiWare, Virtual Console, and other "channels" at first, or a least was going to handle it differently.

But then, this only takes place in the movie and not the novel. However, I think you might want to go back and watch the movie again.

Here is an article that has an embedded YouTube video of the 3D game from Japan http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/03/with-the-nintendo-dsi-xl.ars. Looks interesting.
However, I do not think it is enough for me to buy yet another DS product.

Thanks to some really stupid legal rulings here in the US they are (legally that is).

Windows 2000 reached end of life in 2005, so an upgrade probably would be a good thing since security issues are no longer being addressed for it.
