I've found that the combination of a PC and a Wii serves my gaming needs excellently. The Wii has an excellent set of casual games (Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, etc) that I can pick up and play with my gf whenever we have a few minutes to kill. The PC is great for serious gaming. A keyboard and mouse are, IMO, the best input controllers ever and the graphics on a mid-range gaming PC beat those on a 360 or PS3. I also like the fact that my games are all $50 (and not $60) new at retail.

Of course, everyone is different and I do miss out on a few 360 and PS3 exclusives, but nothing has come out for either system that has been that compelling for me.

I think when people say the Wii has "no good games", they mean it doesn't have good games like GTA, CoD, WoW, and other TLAs. But it has a ton of quick and fun, easy to learn, easy to play games that are great to play with friends, coworkers, kids, gf's, non-gamers etc.

If you rape your girlfriend, then yes you're a bad person, but why should that stop you from using FaceBook? If these sex offenders are so dangerous, then why were they released from prison? Why not change the law so that any sexual offense gets a life sentence? Or how about instead of endless punishment, we look at rehabilitation, at least for the offenders who are capable of being rehabilitated. And finally, consider that some sex offenders are not the criminals you might think they are. Guys have been labeled as sex offenders for being 18 and having sex with a 17 year old, consensually. Consider the "ideal" weight. If you look at models from the 1960's, they were significantly heavier than models are today. Genes are simply not able to mutate quickly enough to go from filled-in women in one generation to toothpicks the next.

  21. FUD on Consumers May Find Smart Appliances a Dumb Idea · · Score: 1

No one is talking about taking away your lights - this is the exact opposite. By having people spread out their electricity usage, you guarantee that there is enough capacity for everyone. The grid is big enough that everyone can use as much electricity as they want; the grid is small enough that we can't all use it at the same time. These "smart" appliances are a stab at an optimization problem.

Most of these appliances will have an override mode anyway, so its not that big a deal.

And consider this - you shower twice a day (hopefully). After every shower, the water heater kicks on and heats up enough water for your next shower plus a little extra to compensate for the fact that its going to sit their idle for 12 hours cooling off. A smart water heater learns when you use hot water and waits until just before you get in the shower to start heating water, significantly reducing the heat loss due to cooling.

Even better scenario: the smart dish washer and smart washing machine signal the smart hot water heater 30 minutes before they start so that they are guaranteed hot water.

The problem is that a parachute with a low melting point enters a region with high temperature particles. Solution: increase the melting point or move the parachute away. IIRC, in the case of an abort, the capsule is lifted away from the rocket by using additional thrusters. If they were allowed to operate for longer, then they would move the capsule further away from the flaming debris.

I have no doubt that the Ares engineers will quickly solve this (if they haven't already).
