I searched for "Windows Live" and the actual Windows Live search page didn't even come up first on the list. I think they are predicting their own doom.
I seem to recall Kevin Costner doing this in Waterworld (1995), so at least the idea has been around for quite some time. Its funny that desalination has been around for awhile and he uses the urine->water method when on the open sea surrounded by salt water.
How seriously can one base decisions on the results? We've had weather simulation software in development for decades and the weather man on TV still can't tell me if it's going to rain tomorrow. It seems this simulation takes human emotion/reaction into account on a large scale, I would think that is much harder to simulate than a weather pattern. Also, who is in charge of programming the human simulations? I would hope they would consult very closely with people actually from the area in question.
The innovation itself is not what is scary. I think its a great idea to finally update the antiquated file seach programs we've been using for years. What's got people paranoid is that google is creating a standard data format to index all our data (web browsing info, emails, im chats, contents of our computers). With the plethora of security vulnerabilities out there it seems very dangerous and even naive to assume this information can't be gathered in mass quantities and then abused.
Could pave the way for the separation of software and hardware. Imagine if all motherboards were able to boot from USB. They already have USB pens more than capable of holding an OS, all your apps, and your data (except for games I can do everything I need to do with 4gb which is the size of the biggest USB pens). Everyone could carry their favorite OS distro, their settings, and all their data with them.
It seems silly to still be locking ourselves into a single set of software for a particular set of hardware. I think if this type of system were to catch on it would only increase the use of Open Source. By letting each person choose their own set of OS and apps for every computer they use I think we'd find a wider range of software being used (because people can make choices based on personal preference rather than avilability of software). This would encourage software developers to make their programs be more universally compatible and this seems to go against what many current closed developers practice.
And I for one welcome our new information wielding overlords.
They know what we look for on the internet, where we are browsing (with their new browser), what's on our computers (with their new desktop search tool), whats in our inbox (gmail), and now what we talk about to our friends through IM. Perhaps we should outsource the Directory of Central Intelligence position to Google? All it would cost us is a few text-only adds on any reports it sends up to the White House.
An email in my inbox this morning guaranteed to increase your size by 4 inches. This could like, double, the number of planets we find! And free shipping to boot.

I just get a "Loading..." message that keeps spinning. I'm pretty sure its just pre-caching the internet for faster searching.
Its official, the "middle of nowhere" is located in Oklahoma!
Sounds to me like Big Brother meets P2P.

I think an even better question is why would anyone access any private information from a public computer?

The news this morning was saying over $2.5 million.

I heard that Apple was planning on invoking the DMCA to prevent terrorists from carrying out thier own terrorist acts using the i-had system.
