  1. Large Spike? on Dept. of Homeland Security Says to Stop Using IE · · Score: 2, Interesting

How much of this "large spike in downloads" was from downloading the recently released 0.9.1? While certainly downloads have increased, I'd like to know what amount is new users versus old users downloading the new release.

  3. Money to Shareholders? on Apple Delays New iMac · · Score: 1

Perhaps you didn't RTFA? There needs to be products to sell in order for the shareholders to benefit.

In fact most investors noticed this and the stock price has gone down in afterhours trading.

How does "money still go the the shareholders" if there is nothing to sell? While "getting as much of it as possible is still their #1 objective", delaying a product revision with no inventory in the pipeline does nothing to forward profits or consumer goodwill.

This happened to the web host Interland last year. They were very tight lipped initially about it, and would not explain what was happening to their IIS based servers. It took a month to get some sites fixed, and that only happened if you complained.

Kitchen area: Nice to have, especially with sink, stove, microwave, tables and even dishwasher. Segregate the kitchen area. No one likes the smell of microwaved fish. Free coffee / tea is a nice touch along with a water cooler with hot and cold taps.

Cubes: Cubes are OK, but put in high walls. Few things suck more than 4' walls on cubes so not only can you hear your neighbor, but you can see them picking their teeth after lunch. Offices are great even if you have to share with 1 to 3 people are OK.

Sunshine: Arrange the office so that the sun shines in even for the most lowly. A view for everyone would be nice, but usually not possible.

Speaker phones: Nooo! Speaker phones in cube farms are the devil's work.

Storage space: Have enough storage space in each work space.

Conference rooms: A few conference rooms for small meetings or as a place to go to sort out a problem away from the farm. Speaker phones in conference rooms are good instead of at desks.

Supply cabinet: One that actually has supplies is nice.

  7. Sound seems to be an after thought. on What Happened To PC Gaming Audio? · · Score: 2, Insightful

The biggest issue that I have with sounds in games is that many companies seem to have put the bare minimum into their development, especially in comparison to the video. I hate playing a visually stunning game only to get voice sets that sound like Kermit in a tin can or sword fights that sound like dropping silverware in a drawer.

Given the current state of things, I don't even care about 5.1 audio. Reasonably good headphones like the Sennheisers HD280 Pros that I am using now have made a bigger difference to my gaming experience than any external audio system that I have used. Rather than effects, I hope that the developers spend more time making the sounds interesting, informative and appropriate.

I have looked at online applications for small businesses, including accounting, data storage, and CRM, but primary thing amoung many concerns is data loss. While Hotmail is not a business service, the comments from iBackup make me very wary about the responsibility of these types of companies for their customers' data.

Pile of crap. It is self-serving 'honesty.' While they may not be able to provide an absolute 100% guarantee if you include Force Majeure; however, it is entirely reasonable to guarantee that in the absence of unique events that they have an adequate system of backups of the data. Furthermore, the fact that they have none of the data, not even last week means that the system has completely failed. While I don't know what the contract was between Microsoft and iBackup, I find it reprehensible that they have taken this tone to their PR absolving themselves of their mistake. This seems to be a typical case of hiding and not accepting responsibility.

Taxachusetts counts. There seems to be a big push to pay use taxes on items not purchased in-state. As I recall there is even a box this year on the income tax form to declare these unpaid taxes. From the Boston Globe Archives:" STATE'S NEW TECHNOLOGY GATHERS INFORMATION TO FIND TAX CHEATS Published on February 15, 2004 Author(s): Bruce Mohl, Globe Staff If you get the urge to fudge a bit on your taxes this year because you think, "Who's going to notice?" think again. Stupid users get stupid results, just like in a library or Lexis/Nexis or The Readers Guide Periodical Literature or any database, and even the lowly card catalog. Search smarter and get better results. Instead of apple try 'fiona apple' or 'apple -computer' or any other modifier to drill down. No search system can read my mind. It only does what I tell it. So if MSN biases the searches differently, it still won't know that I am looking up Apple Valley, Minnesota unless I tell it. This article is really pointing out that the author cannot use the tools at hand. Maybe his next one should point out that hammers should have guards so that he doesn't hurt his thumb.
