Hmmm...now there's a novel idea. While I never like the idea of "fuel-free" anything (there's always a catch), I could see this working well, especially for stationary applications (floating power plants, floating positioning "satellites" that aren't actually satellites since they aren't in orbit). I wonder though where and at what altitude you'd have to go to get decent return from this.

Yeah maybe I should have called blasphemy on him for implying that Linux and/or Firefox was somehow messed up, let alone doing so on /.

I never thought I'd do OS X, but after years of having "fun" with Windows getting it to work with "supported" hardware and with Linux getting it to work with "unsupported" hardware, it's nice having something that just works. Sure, it's pricey and the eye-candy isn't really adding anything technically, but for all around user experience, it rocks. And as someone very interested in user experience and interface, it's nice to immerse myself in what could arguably be the best (in those regards...I still need a PC for Counter-Strike).

I do use Mac/Safari, Windows/Firefox, Windows/IE, and others on occasion (or when at work) but just to check CSS quirks.

  4. Re:Won't help the people in India much. on Tsunami Warning System Up and Running · · Score: 3, Interesting

The biggest problem with my country, India, is that an early warning system won't make much of a difference because there is no way to inform most of the thousands of villages and settlements on the coastlines.

That pretty goes for every country in the 2004 tsunami zone. As others have said, a bit more regional and local cooperation is what is really needed - our (U.S.) best seismologists and such knowing that a tsunami is coming is nice, but for those that don't have CNN/BBC/whatever piped into their homes, the news will be late. Your comment is true, but a little too narrow-focused - and typical of the kinds of challenges faced in these situations.

And only on Slashdot could someone make such a worthless comment.

Solar wind, gravitational plots, and air winds all represent very subtle and dynamic forces that can't be directly controlled (unlike aerodynamic forces and engine thrust, for instance). If these guys are able to accurately navigate through winds and do it all more efficiently (and faster, hopefully) than currently available, the navigational community could apply their methods to a lot of different methods of navigation. It's like finding a better turbine blade - jets, powerplants, and watercraft could all benefit.

If you thought I was serious, please know that my favorite television programs are currently "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart", "The Colbert Report", "Family Guy", and "South Park"

The point was simply that if people want to blame video games for their effects on children, they should blame everything. As "The Daily Show" pointed out beautifully (and rather sneakily - if you weren't paying attention you missed the PBS watermark on the war footage) in Stewart's recent rant on Congressional hearings over violent video games, watching the news exposes children to more real violence than most video games. What about 30-40 years ago, when American (and other) children had toy guns, little green army men, and stories about the evil communists? That didn't have any effect? Sure, video games may bring things more and more realistically and with more and more user control, but if we go after them, we might as well go after all toys and entertainment (thus the point of my satire...that and the fact that its an election year, so I could totally see someone liking the idea of proposing a bill to tie the punishment for violent games and such to beefing up law enforcement.)

Amusing, but in all seriousness, I'd love to see how well this stuff can plot courses through winds. This kind of thing could also be great for space travel - both for plotting through solar winds and gravitational assists (or both at once). If it's that much better at plotting through winds than whatever else we've had up until now, maybe it's also better than whatever orbital navigation plotting we have rigth now.

Case in point - me. Last weekend, after contemplating a Xbox 360 purchase for months, I decided instead to just buy an Xbox 360 controller and hook it up to the Mac Mini already sitting next to my HDTV (gaming on a Mac - I know, blasphemy). Add Halo for Mac and some emulators, and I've got a pretty nice retro gaming system. And chances are, there'll be a Wii sitting next to it this time next year. $249 or less for a system, plus free or cheap retro games and one or two new games and I'll probably still spend less than the purchase price of one PS3 - without games, accessories, etc.
