  1. Overkill? on 13.1 Surround Sound Coming to a Home near you? · · Score: 3, Funny

    The only reason you really have that many speakers in a movie theater is because, well...it's big! I think 10 speakers is really the max for a home theater, and even that for the people who can devote a room to just a theater. My perfect sound setup would be a center, 2 front, 2 mid, 2 back, 1 directly behind, and 1 pointing down from the cieling. So that gives you pretty much full surround sound, as not much tends to happen below people in movies.

    For the average joe though I think 7.1 is pretty good, considering most people tend to get the cheapest speakers they can get, usually those ones that come with the theater packages, $199 for 7 speakers. I think the amount of speakers is less important than quality. I would rather be stuck in stereo with two very high quality speakers, than surround sound with 7 crappy ones.

  2. Different names on checks? on Identity Thieves Drain Unemployment Benefit Funds · · Score: 1

    I can understand the underlying concept of the fraud, but your social security number is linked to your name, atleast in New York state. I can guess you can change the address to where the check is sent to, but it seems hard.

    1)Most states won't send unemployment checks out of state without some extra paperwork, with more authorization.

    2)The computers will most likely pick up the fact that 100 checks are being sent to the same address. I had an issue once when I was collecting unemployment at the same time my father was, living in the same house. They don't send checks to P.O. Boxes either, so you cannot setup 100 different addresses.

    3)The name on the check will be the name of the of the unemployment recipient. Banks won't cash checks under different names without id. So now you're creating 100 fake id's, opening up bank accounts, and you have to go to 100 different banks, or you risk someone recognizing you cashign checks under different names.

    Seems awfully risky to me, with a lot of variables that can go wrong. Probably easier to just rob the people when they cash their checks and leave the bank.

The only thing I can think of is maybe a company used i as a demo reel type thing in order to get a contract from Nintendo? I would think no company would risk faking this and releasing it due to lawyers.

    It does seem like a lot of hardware to push on us in 2005-2006, but hey Nintendo does have an assload of money, and they may feel this is their last chance. 21. Usual Nintendo hype on Nintendo Revolution Under Wraps Past E3 · · Score: 2, Insightful
    They're probably simply afraid whatever they do have might be blown away by the PS3 and Xbox Next. I think Nintendo is running out of ideas as the other companies are getting developers who make platform games as well as Nintendo. Sony has it's Square and Rockstar. Microsoft has Rare and Bungie. Nintendo has well...Nintendo. Sure Nintendo has made some amazing games in the past, but they're starting to feel their age. Plus their incessent insistance that "mature" games be not included on their consoles, which are always delayed to the point that the hardware is behind what is currently out.

    The N64, which was originally the Dolphin, then the Ultra 64 was delayed almost two years. The Gamecube was delayed as well. Now we're seeing the possibility of an Xbox release this year, a possible PS3 release in Japan end of this year/early next, and Nintendo hoping to get the console out by end of 2006. If it's not delayed again. Then they release the DS, and now the Gameboy Revolution planned. The DS was a quickly made half-assed portable to beat the PSP to market.

    Don't get me wrong, I used to be a huge Nintendo fan. I always thought they were pioneers, but they're becoming that old dinosaur of the industry that's only still around because the brand name itself has some intrinsic value.

In specialized ways like the examples stated they sound good, but for games and regular applications it's probably useless. Imagine layering a room with this, and getting images on all 6 sides, and playign things such as an FPS, or RPG. Even adapting movies and such would be quite useful.

    Uhhh last summer or so when I bought my Apple iPod, the 4th gen one it stopped responding about 20 minutes after I got it and charged it up. I called up Apple since I ordered from them and told them the problem. After being walked through their procedures they told me to send it back, if they can't repair it, they'll give me a refurbished unit, but since the 4th gen was new my "chances" of getting a new unit back was good. When I paid $300 for a new product that worked for 20 minutes before breaking, to be told if they can't fix their bad product i'll get a refurbished unit was appalling. Had to spend days going up Apple's ladder to get someone to guarentee me a new unit. When this iPod finally goes kaput, there won't be another iPod in sight. Apple had their chance with me and it was a horrible experiance.

    That's right, i'm selling my popular newsite Slashdot for $30k. There's nothing sinister about this. The company really liked the website, and they said there wouldn't be as many repeats, dupes and Roland Piquepaille articles . I hear $30 grand is a really good number these days for this quality.

    So help me out: what would be a good swag of gadgets to get hold of for US$30,000? Here's my initial wish-list:

    * A dictionary to learn how to properly spell.

    * Some kind of anti-bias machine. Maybe Microsoft makes one.

    * An anti-duping machine.

    * A vaccine for my Apple Fever. And not the one that attacked my lower intestine that summer of 76.

    * Maybe a realdoll.
