Funny you should mention this. When I was just a kid of about 12 or 13 years old the going modem rate was 2400 baud and BBS's were where it was at. The rules to get access to the adult sections were always crazy like send in a photocopy of a drivers license, and often times pretending to be a girl and flirting with the sysop gained you entry within 10 minutes, no ID required. Most of the time I just typed out word for word the bs letters from penthouse/playboy I'd found in my dad's closet. (In these days porn 'video' found online was usually about 12 frames of animation that was looped very well so the male was in a perpetual thrusting motion. Hilarious.)

The best is when they called you out for downloading porn that obviously was predominately female, and telling the sysop that you really liked girls as well as guys and before you know it you have superuser status. You could download all kinds of things with that. (I think this is how I played police quest 2.) I remember having to setup fake 'meetings' with some of these sysops, just to keep status for a few more days. Nothing elevated user privelages faster than the possibility of some "hot chick" who is into girls and wants to meet you. Then I'd hide out for a few months and repeat the process all over again.

My pops at the time didn't have unlimited local calling for the phone line and our first months phone bill was something like 700 dollars. Ah, those were the days.

You are also correct that the DHLS encompasses some of the powers of the ex-KGB. Personally I think the reason for all the anti-Americanism is the wild capitalism we export. Making money is the only thing and that causes concern as the old cultural values and communities are slowly being whitewashed with nothing but consumerism. Being only a few hundred years old with no common heritage (being the melting pot) it is hard for us to understand a culture of thousands of years.

There used to be a line between culture and profits but that slowly disappeared during the 80's. Now some would argue that unrestrained profiteering is our culture, and that is precisely the problem. It need not be the case.

While our government is claiming to bring democracy to the Middle East, it is very evident that what they are really bringing is shopping malls, KFC, and Gap stores. I'm guessing that importing consumerism under the false pretense of democracy is the big issue here, and one that the world seems to be able to see right through with the exception of the American people.

That being said, I don't know what happened 150 years ago to harbor the resentment, but it is easy for powerful orgainizations to sway public opinion, as we all know.

They don't care how much it costs, they don't care about rootkits, and they certainly don't care if the CEO makes them into sheep. They want Final Fantasy, they want the PS3.

You are wrong to think that people won't buy this because of Sony's past behavior, they indeed will buy it. It's easy to decry it here on /. where anyone can go from star to stink with majority support, but real life isn't like slashdot, it is far far more stupid and careless.

Correction there, most game artwork is done at mid level detail and then rez'ed up or down to suit needs. Also, it costs exactly the same to export a texture at 1024x1024 as 256x256. You always work on the texture large and export it out small to hide any flaws it may have. Same applies to visual effects.

No one uses the high poly model for the game, it's for cinematics and for normal map creation. Having worked with Maya and 3D studio max for 5 years now, I can assure you there is no magic tool that lowers your poly count without totally wrecking your model. You have to do it by hand, no matter what.

Also, no game model has 1m or 5m polygons. 10k is approaching the limit of lag fest for a model. Keep in mind you often have 20 models on the screen at the same time.

As for your third point, well, who wants to get the hardcore gaming system "lite" version? No one. They are marketing it as 'hard core' and who wants to be $100 less hard core than the Joneses? No one who would spend $500 on a game system that is for sure.

Especially considering that it will come with 1 controller and likely be crippled in some other way as well. (For example: $30 bucks for the cable to connect to your super expensive tv to get better than NTSC resolution from it.)

I could get the best gfx card around and a gig of ram for my computer for that kind of money. If the "Next-gen" console has lesser hardware than my damn computer, isn't upgradable, locks my DVD purchases and rentals into a 50/50 crap shoot, what is my incentive to buy that thing again?

Or... if I had to have a new game console, I could buy a Nintendo for 200 bucks that plays every game for every system they ever made and even better, girls seem to love it if E3 was any indicator. With the $400 bucks I saved I could buy 6 or so games for it and the 2nd controller to match.

Hmm... let me think. An overhyped and overpriced system that locks me into a certain format for all future movies purchases from a company that surreptitiously installs rootkits on my computer without my permission or knowledge and demos burned crappy DVD-R's as the genuine McCoy... or... a game console built from the ground up to redefine gaming and put the fun back into it, get people off the couch and moving, 100% backwards compatible with all past games they have made, from a company that has been making fun games (not just video games) since 1889?

The issue I am trying to illustrate is that you cannot compare the Oblivion on the PC with Oblivion on the Xbox. Xbox loses hands down. Just because it costs less to process graphics doesn't mean you are getting a good deal. You cannot compare the two, they are so different.

You said "Fine, please let me know where I can get a rig for under $400 that will play Oblivion comparably to the Xbox 360. Custom or not, it doesn't exist." - That WAS your full post.

You left so many factors out of the equation you should be ashamed. For starters, you haven't factored in the price of the TV you are playing it on. So it isn't just $400 is it? If you don't have hi-def TV, you are already behind in graphics processing. With the mod "old-blivion" you could play the game at comparable settings on your dated PC because your TV has 1/3 the resolution of your monitor, unless its a good $2000 TV. And there where are we? Back where we started.

I am saying that this is comparing apples to oranges because in your little world the only difference is in the price. You are not recognizing that these two systems are producing different products with the same name. That was my point. You argument is basically stating that Xbox is cheaper, so it is better. I am saying that you are wrong.

You may have saved money on the system, but you got 1/2 the game everyone else got. Most 'gaming computers' come with a monitor. Xbox does not come with a TV. If you use crappy old hardware on a PC to run the game you get the same graphics as a shiny new Xbox on an old TV.

If you feel your post is about economics only, then I ask you:

What good is a $400 game system if you don't have a TV that is good enough to take advantage of it? And why isn't that included in your price?

I could show you plenty of $400 graphics cards that will play oblivion just dandy. That's the real comparison here, not 1 Xbox vs. a whole gaming rig.
