Agreed...when I found out my local school was getting rid of some "servers" (i.e. throwing them away) I went down and said "I'll take them!!!".

Now I've got a nice HP Kayak running BackupPC and some other older PCs waiting to be put to use along with some UPSs.

Later on I found out that they weren't throwing them away but the district was coming to pick them up....what the district did with them is another question (I seriously got the impression that they really were going to throw them away or just let people take them for free!).

I still think Linspire is one of the best distros for newbies. I run Fedora Core at home and I tried to get the wifey to switch to Linux and she did not like it one bit. She said, and I quote "It's like a really old version of Windows, I feel like I just took a step backwards."

However, during one of those special offers, "Download Linspire now for free", I installed Linspire on our laptop and she had no problems making the switch.

Granted she still went back to XP once she found out that her beloved American Greetings Create-a-Card program didn't run under Linux.

  13. I can actually reply to this one... on When Should You Quit Your Job? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I was working for a nice company, great benefits, pay was ok (not great, but good). I was doing VB work of all things. As easy going and laid back as it was it was not challenging at all and I was bored. Coming in to work, working half a day and then surfing the rest of the day can get boring day in and day out.

So I started to interview (actually only took one interview). I found a medical device company that was hiring...even though the position was for Windows Development I was assured that movement into the embedded side was possible.

So I took the job and quit my other job. It took 3 and a 1/2 years before they finally moved me into the embedded team but it was well worth the wait. Now I actually make more than I would if I had stayed at the other company (although I didn't leave because of pay) and I'm really enjoying the work.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is basically what everyone else is saying in one sentence...don't quit until you have something else lined up :-) And you shouldn't leave over petty things like development tools....only if you are truly dissatisfed with your job.

  18. late bloomer on Introducing Children to Computers? · · Score: 1

I was probably a late bloomer compared to everyone else. I was around 10 or 11 and my dad let me keep the Commodore 64 when I moved out with my mom (divorce). The best part though was he kept up his subscription to RUN magazine (C64 mag) in my name and address.

Just like others have mentioned here with Contact 3-2-1, RUN also had a program at the end of each issue (BASIC) that I would type in to see what it would do; then I'd change the code and see what that did.

Sad part is, I had nothing but my C64 and some Apple stuff all the way up through High School. So when I started as a freshman in College I didn't even know what a compiler was ('run' just ran my code) or how to add/remove PCI cards (while it appeared that everyone else did).

Now with kids of my own I'm wondering how I should get them involved. For now they just have educational games but at some point I may try and teach them some programming (but honestly I don't think they'll be interested).

With that being said, I agree with another poster that said you can't force it, they're either in to it or not. All you can do is expose them to it.

Apparently his code does have bugs from time to time:

    From http://www.tug.org/whatis.html
Donald Knuth, a professor of computer science at Stanford University and the author of numerous books on computer science and the TeX composition system, rewards the first finder of each typo or computer program bug with a check based on the source and the age of the bug. Since his books go into numerous editions, he does have a chance to correct errors. Typos and other errors in books typically yield $2.56 each once a book is in print (pre-publication "bounty-hunter" photocopy editions are priced at $.25 per), and program bugs rise by powers of 2 each year from $1.28 or so to a maximum of $327.68. Knuth's name is so valued that very few of his checks - even the largest ones - are actually cashed, but instead framed. (Barbara Beeton states that her small collection has been worth far more in bragging rights than any equivalent cash in hand. She's also somewhat biased, being Knuth's official entomologist for the TeX system, but informal surveys of past check recipients have shown that this holds overwhelmingly for nearly everyone but starving students.) This probably won't be true for just anyone, but the relatively small expense can yield a very worthwhile improvement in accuracy.
