The above commands spit out a Bare file list, one including Subdirectories. Those work as quick-and-dirty M3U playlists. Of course, if you can extract the ID3 tags, then you can probably incorporate them into the M3U

    3. And yes, enjoy your vice. Once you do that, I don't mind. Better you enjoy living a shorter life then suffer through a longer life.

    4. My vice would be Dilbert. The TV show. I lived for it. Now that Teletoon (I live in Canada) moved it to midnight, I don't care as much.

    Pocket PC 2000
    Pocket PC 2002
    Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC.

    So it already exists.

    And I'd love an iTunes for the Palm OS

    A very useful user management command. Add /? to the end to get a --help like summary. You can disable accounts with it

    C:\WINDOWS>cacls

    Change Access Control Lists. I think you can use it like chmod, play around with it to find out. Should be useful for your Program Files example

    Fast forward many years. Imagine your typical highway. All of the cars are equipped with their own senses, but also wireless networking. Road signs could have wireless adapters as well that would broadcast their prescence. Let's say a pedestrian dashes out in front of the car. The cameras catch it and hit the brakes. At the same time, that is transmitted to the other cars so we don't have a pileup

    If you want a PDA that does that, you're probably more oriented to Palm OS or Pocket PC. The entire purpose of Linux PDAs at this point in time is to cater to the supergeek. Those who look upon GUI tools with disdain. Face it, Linux PDAs right now are still a geek's device.

    But I am hopefull that in time they will be for the masses.

    *raises hand* Go to Staples and buy CD sheets, a binder, and some tabs. CD sheets are 8.5x11 sheets that hold CDs. Divide up the binder with the tabs, then keep the extras in the back. Easy. Cheap. Painless

    I call bullshit. If the police officer is not conducting an investigation, it is not obstruction of justice. Thus, he would in reality have no reason to search your person. Thus, the 'evidence' would not stand up in court.

    Of course, it would be hellish, being arrested, going to jail for a while, waiting for a trial, the whole criminal justice[sic] experience. Still, once the main evidence is thrown out on basis of an illegal search of your person, it should be easy to prove your innocence, even if you were guilty of possession of contraband.

    Gotta love the US legal system

    I belive the levy was challenged once on the basis that the Constitution Act only allowed the House of Commons to declare taxes/levies/etc. But that has pretty much disappeared now.

    Your microwave oven heats up things close to its antenna as well, and you know what frequency it uses? 2.4 GHz as well. Now, if these things did not have very powerful transmitters and used better antennas for the base station, we could save battery life and possibly make them safer.

    Good point. Just as a reminder to those of us my age, CP/M stood for Control Program for Microprocessors. It's interesting becuase it doesn't pretend to have everything and the kitchen sink like a Web Browser, media player, CD burner, instant messenger, *cough*Windows*cough*. It's just a program for controlling the hardware.

    Try AccessDTV It pipes the HDTV stream right onto the VGA stream but you can record (1GB/hour) and take screenshots. It was reviewed by How Stuff Works

    What do you have installed? After being on for about 48 to 72 hours straight, my XP Pro box starts to slow down. For best results I reboot every 24 hours

    Zip-Linq cables. They go by many different brand names (Boxwave Minisync is another) but are extendable cables. You can get ones that do USB A-B, A-mini, and extender (good for thumbdrives). The minisync is for PDAs.

    If you have a PDA, then some sort of USB charger is very handy

    As a Thinkpad G40 user, I BEG to differ. The 'eraser nub' as you call it, is the BEST pointing device I have ever used. I can move one pixel or across the screen. It is just that good. And i keep my hands in one position when I have to type and mouse at the same time.

    BTW, Thinkpads have a middle button that makes the nub act as a scroller. Very handy for reading /.

    Knoppix 3.2 physically locks the CD-ROM drive when in use. Your receptionist can press the eject button until there is no flesh left on their finger and it will not come out

    That is a VERY good thing. Still, why should computers have sound cards and speakers in a corporate environment?

    I dual boot XP Pro and Mandrake 9.2. Mandrake 9.2 has exactly what you are asking for. You do need to enable it (so does XP) but I guess it works. I haven't actually tried it though.

    Think about this. You make a custom liveCD, debug it, then deploy it on your Linux boxen. The boxes don't need HDDs, you could store user data on a network server. Even if a luser tries as hard as they can to mess it up, it's all fixed with a reboot. You could make different liveCDs for different departments with the proper apps installed (e.g. OpenOffice, payroll, accounting, sales, CRM, etc)

    Anyone ever consider this?

    About those EULAs. It is well known that a contract agreed to by a minor is NULL and VOID. Which means that when my 18th birthday comes, it will suck. But it also means the EULAs for the four dozen or so programs I have don't count.

    Just get a minor to agree to the EULA for you and it is null & void

    I very much agree. I have two computers: IBM Thinkpad G40: 2gHz Celeron, 128 mb RAM Compaq Presario 5330 Upgraded: 380 mHz K6-2, 320 mb RAM With XP Home they're about the same speed, but the desktop is a bit snappier. The desktop is from 1999, the laptop 2003 BTW, XP Home on boot needed about 120 mb, so it would page just to run something. I did a clean install of Pro and was down to about 100 mb On the desktop, at one point XP Home was 100 mb with lots of things in the background
