Are you kidding me? That's frigging genius. It means that people with Gmail accounts do the work for Google of spreading the gmail user base, which gets everybody more involved in the process and turns what is basically just a good webmail service into something just a little bit more special. You think Hotmail or Yahoo mail users feel/act that way? Hell no. Gmail is a perfect example of growing and differentiating a brand.

Yes, but in this context, the coders would be 'independent contractors',not employees, which would change what RAC could do to wayward coders.

Of course, any middleman company worth its salt would have legal recourse if any service provider of theirs actually went ahead and did this. Every employment contract I've ever seen stipulates that the employee cannot go work for a client without the express written permission of the employer.

Even your comment proves this point, as both client and employer are the same person.

While this "invasion of privacy" is a little unsettling, we're talking about 20 very high-profile people here, not John Q. public.

Also, everybody seems to be missing the other half of the story, namely how they targeted specifically this small group of people instead of wasting more money on a broader campaign. How much money did they save? How much more were they free to spend since they were targeting such a small group? How does the creativity angle work when you're targeting one guy instead of a large, poorly-defined wad?

The privacy angle here is a red herring. We should be talking about Advertising and marketing getting out of the 19th century.

Why is it that Christianity gets singled out?

Good question. Maybe it's because they're meshed deep into the government apparatus of the most powerful country on the planet? As for me, I just find 'em to be snooty assholes. Can't say that about any of the Muslims I've met, and I've lived in Saudi for two years. At least to a Muslim, and infidel is still a living, human being. I mean, they'll feel bad for ya, but it's not their problem to solve. To most Christians, if you're not one of them, the best you can hope for is to be ignored, because if you're going to hell, you have nothing to offer. It's creepy watching Christians ignore somebody because they're not "saved".
