I know that MA law on a yellow light just says "Same as the MUTCD", and the MUTCD rule about yellow lights is that they simply tell you that the green phase has ended, and the red phase will soon start. There is no obligation to stop (or do anything else) when the light is yellow.
Here's a good example: I live in an unincorporated area just inland from Myrtle Beach, SC. This area has a Myrtle Beach, SC mailing address, but isn't in the city limits. The city of MB recently enacted a new 'tourism tax' that tacks an additional 1% to the normal sales tax in the area. The problem is that businesses (including both local stores as well as out of state mail order companies, etc) are charging the extra 1% to anything with a MB address.
Aside from 1 small housing development, my entire zip code is entirely outside of the MB city limits, yet we are randomly getting charged the wrong sales tax (which we don't even benefit from, since we're not actually part of that city).
This brings back memories of running a Quake server, back when Quake was new. My boss in my hardware lab let us set up a spare box as a dedicated server, and now and then we would alter some of the server settings (like max run speed) without telling the other people that would join at lunch. WE knew to change the max run speed in our exec files, so they would sit there screaming at how we could somehow move around so fast, without knowing that we could even do what we had done!
Then there were the times where my buddy & I would stay late on fridays and play online (back when it was mostly big companies that had fast net connections), and we would replace the player skins with maxbright images, so we could snipe people more easily!
And before you start flaming me for being such an ass, we only did it now and then to get reactions out of people that had been super dicks while playing a fair game! We really were pretty good, and didn't NEED to do stuff like that!:-P
This has brought up the memory of when I installed AVG on my in-law's laptop a couple of years ago (after removing the Norton crap that came preinstalled on their Vaio). A few days later, she was visiting, and was pissed off about how she kept getting pop-ups from AVG, and wanted to know how to stop them.
I had to inform her that those pop-ups were AVG notifying her of malicious files that Norton never found. She was very upset to find out how infested her laptop was, but then she realized what was causing her laptop to run so horribly all the time...
Holy crap! Did someone on Slashdot just make an actual proper-sounding analogy? (Too bad it didn't mention a comparison to cars or an unlocked front door...)
One aspect of this "make a minor change to the drug" thing that really bugs me is the whole "take the drug with the expiring patent and make a time-release pill out of it" idea.
As a person who has had a colectomy many years ago, I am unable to digest time-release pills. Unfortunately, most useful OTC drugs have gradually changed into time-release (like most of the good allergy meds!).
But don't some phone companies refuse to transfer a phone number to another provider if the account isn't in good standing?
>The question kind of answers itself. You've explained the situation and they've explained the situation. As it stands they've >lost both a data customer AND a phone customer.
I had a credit card that actually bothered to spell my name with an apostrophe (O'Brien). There were a few instances where an e-commerce site, when asking for my name as spelled on my credit card, wouldn't accept OBrien, but would belch back with an error if I tried to use O'Brien. It's tough to type in my name if one of the characters in the name is illegal!
Isn't the customer/end-user paying to access the network? Why should SBC (or whoever) get to charge Google for me to access my email, when I'm already paying for that network connection?
As far as I have seen, if you change your account level at the Netflix website, it changes at the start of the next billing cycle.
So if you are part of the class settlement, and get the free month of upgrade, just go to the website and downgrade your account the next day. Presumably, it should take effect at the start of the next billing cyale, and it won't cost you a cent extra.
The email I got from Netflix notifying me of the settlement clearly states:
"After the benefit period ends, the new or upgraded level of service will continue automatically (following an email reminder) and you will be billed accordingly, unless you cancel or modify your subscription. You can cancel or modify your subscription at any time."
I've always assumed (well, not always. for the past few DT books), that the events in 'The Mist' were due to a thinny. Whether it was naturally occuring, or due to a military project, I don't have any thoughts on.
I would be willing to bet that you can make the argument for selling the copy of Windows that comes with an OEM PC. But what if the license key for that Windows install is locked to that machine? Go ahead and sell your Windows CD, lotta good it will be without that key!
I guess I don't need to buy a hybrid! My 1995 Accord gets about 30city/35highway!
>Honda's hybrids all get better gas mileage on the highway than in the city: > > * Honda Insight: 60mpg city, 66mpg highway (source) > * Honda Civic Hybrid: 46mpg city, 51mpg highway (source) > * Honda Accord Hybrid: 29mpg city, 37mpg highway (source) > >I've been very happy with the Honda Insight that I bought in 2001.
Simple way to remedy this is to demand a signed contract.
I recently closed a 6+ year AT&T Wireless account, and knew I had a standing contract on 1 of my 2 phones. AT&T insisted that I had a contract on both lines, and said that when I had added some service to the older line, I had invoked a contract renewal.
I simply kept telling the numerous people on the phone that I did not agree to verbal contracts, and only enterted into a contract on paper, and if they could not provide a signed contract, then they didn't have a leg to stand on.
After a few 45 minute phone calls, they relented...

Actually, it is also (at least in my family) meant to be spoken sarcastically.
In that case, it makes perfect sense.
I know I'm reading this article a couple of days after it was posted, but did I miss the post that said:
"In Soviet Russia, bomb tests YOU!"
??

Yellow Pages? What's that?
I haven't gotten one of those phone books in a couple of years (since I switched my phone service from Verizon to Comcast).
I seem to recall that ST:TNG relied heavily on the starboard power coupling as a foil/remedy for everything.

After skimming over the summary, I pictured desolate swaths of African wasteland, covered in mounds of expired ethernet packets...
How do you know web hype did nothing for 'Snakes on a Plane'?
For all we know, without the web hype, the movie would have opened dead last, instead of near the top of the pack...

I still recall how frightening it was when I was suspected of having a Vancomycin resistant Staph infection a few years ago.
"Why is everybody wearing the gowns and masks?"
"Why can't I leave my room?"
A similar thing that happened to me a few times:

Whoever wrote the summary clearly didn't RTFA.

I purchased a Win2K H.O.T. kit and got both beta and release versions of Win2K. All I got was Pro, Server, Advanced Server, and DataCenter.
No Home edition.
{Talk about a deal! I bought a NFR set, and got all 4 versions, with a license, for less than the cost of Win2K Pro alone!)
Why would we be discussing the London incident in a discussion thread about an internet browser book?
And you're complaining about priorities while you yourself are reading this thread!
How long until somebody tries to avoid getting into a car accident, guns the gas, and gets creamed when their car refuses to go fast enough?
