  1. The amusing thing is.. on Sony's New DRM Technique · · Score: 2, Interesting

Most of the pirates they are fighting against aren't even interested in purchasing the music, and wouldn't even if they had to. Most pirates I know do it just because it's fun. It's a challenge - who can get the latest Britney Spears album out on FTP, IRC, and P2P networks the fastest. Adding DRM just ups the anty, making the game even more challenging - the only people it really hurts is the consumer. The music lover. The honest people who want to listen to music.

I stopped buying new CDs of artists under the RIAA months ago, and couldn't be happier. I rip all my music @ 320kbps, so buying a used, slightly scratched CD doesn't bother me.

If you are willing to be patient and keep an eye out, you can make it being perfectly legit AND not supporting an unethical industry - I picked up the latest NIN album used @ Slackers this weekend, and it just came out recently. I live and breathe music, and have a very large, extensive collection.

However, if you take my approach as stated, you must also at least consider the people downloading from the person who just downloaded from you, etc, etc.. The cost skyrockets. The higher you are up on the pyramid, the more you have to pay. I myself can't see any way to make this sort of thing more feasible to a lawyer, so the odds of any kind of plan similar to my previous post being implemented is slim to none.

  5. Well, sort of. on Cuban Says RIAA Damages Should be $5 Per Month · · Score: 4, Insightful

The main people the RIAA are going after are the SHARERS - the people who have hundreds, dare I saw thousands of songs in their shared folder, and are on a high-speed connection. 5 dollars per month per each individual person who downloaded from that one person is probably a little more what the RIAA would be after, if they had to affix something like that to the cost.

You don't have to completely stop buying CDs - I stopped buying NEW CDs (except for those released under labels not affiliated with the RIAA).. Click here to find out whether a CD is or not.

I hit used CD stores all the time - not only do I get my music without supporting the RIAA juggernaut, I get it CHEAP. I can get 5 CDs for around 30 bucks or less (Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Depeche Mode, Led Zep, VNV Nation, Holst, Vivaldi, KMFDM, and way more).

Plus, a number of used CD stores give indie artists an outlet for distributing their own music. I've both distributed my own and purchased others through lots of smaller shops.

  13. I wouldn't know about making it big, but.. on Online Business Model for a Band? · · Score: 1

There are a number of places that will host and link to indie artists. For instance, I am a Christian Industrial (loosely using that definition - I use Industrial stylings, but I don't limit myself to the genre) recording artist, so I am linked to by various sites conducive bringing fans of the style to me.

Another great way to get exposure is to participate in indie compilation CDs - there are a number of groups out there that compile CDs with the hit songs by numerous indie artists. Just make good use of google for this one, or wait for them to contact you (I've gotten asked to be on 4 or 5 from online references, and numerous ones in person).

The best suggestion I have is the most straight-forward - make a website, put up some songs, and put up fliers. You can improvise a bit on this idea - One thing I do is I pass around an album every year with the latest songs I've recorded, some previously unreleased ones, and the big hits. I put the title (exposed.2004 was the most recent), the band name, and the URL to the website for info on the album. Make sure you provide more music to download from the site other than what is on the comp CD.

Just a few simple suggestions. Good luck.

  16. Blackbox is ok, but.. on Blackbox (Finally) Updated · · Score: 3, Interesting

I prefer the likes of BadWM. Sadly, though, it is in dire need of an update. People are working on it, sorta :/ BadWM is what a minimalistic WM should be (IMHO) - no window decorations except for a border around the window, quick keyboard commands, and it handles virtual desktops. I really don't like having a titlebar on my windows.

I've been using Ion2 recently, and it isn't too bad either.. it's fast, although switching from BadWM to a tiling WM is a bit difficult :P

As far as those saying WMs shouldn't have to worry about memory footprints.. I have 768 megs of RAM, and I still don't like a WM that hogs RAM. I do memory-intensive work, and I don't want my WM taking up all my RAM just so it can look pretty. Even if I had 2 gigs of RAM, I'd still prefer BadWM or Ion2.

  22. Piracy in general helped me find my musical tastes on Has P2P Influenced Your Music Tastes? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I never really listened to a whole lot of music before music piracy. I had one or two CDs, a couple tapes, and that was it.

A friend at school started passing a collection of mp3s on a CD around at school. I copied em' to my HDD, and gave em' a listen.

Without that CD, I might have not been introduced to Industrial, and might not have become a solo recording artist myself. I now have purchased hundreds of CDs, and occasionally purchase music from iTunes and Napster (not iTunes so much, though - I've only purchased about 10-15 songs online).

After getting that CD, I got a taste of NIN and KMFDM - And I was thirsty for more. I asked friends online if they would recommend me other artists. Once I got a recommendation, I usually hit Morpheus or whatever P2p client I was using at the time to check em' out if I couldn't find samples legally.

Now, thanks to p2p networks, I am a music fanatic. I listen to classical, industrial, 80s/early 90s metal, blues, jazz, funk, electronic rock, and more. I also am a huge fan of indie artists.

I'm all about doing things legit, so I don't keep the music I download. In fact, I don't download anymore - I can't. All P2P traffic is blocked by my college. We can't even use BitTorrent.

Oh well, it just helps me to stay legal while boycotting the RIAA. I buy used CDs nowadays, anyway. It's cheaper, and since I just rip them to my HDD, I don't need a CD that's going to last forever.

Now, if I could just get my fans to distribute my music on p2p networks ;)

A small note: A year ago IIRC, I was using Limewire to do genre searches. Rather effective way to find quick artists in a genre, assuming people rip their music and edit the id3 tags properly :)

I started programming thanks to that wonderful magazine. It had qbasic programs that I would code, and then modify.

My recommendation would be Pascal, or C++ for Windows, assuming the user has the proper train of thought for programming. Pascal would be my primary recommendation, because the syntax isn't too bad and there are lots of books out on it. However, if the child has proven to have plenty of aptitude for programming, go ahead and start him/her out on C or C++ - they'll want to get plenty of use out of their experience, I'm sure, and it'll prove to be beneficial later on.

If you want to give them an extremely basic intro, try bash shell scripting in Linux. I've intro'd a few people to scripting through that, and they enjoy making their own simple shell scripts - however, they have to be exposed to Linux and it's mechanics to really be able to use it.

As far as my introduction to computing, I did it with the Apple software with the bears.. Jeez, can't even remember what it was called. Lets not forget Oregon Trail.
