  1. I don't know if this was such a good year on 2005 Good Year for Power Architecture · · Score: 1

Don't get me wrong, IBM seems to have found a better market for themeselves in video game consoles, but it hasn't been too sucessful in the pc realm with the 'power pc' processors. I think the console market is just a better fit for them as they don't seem to have the same production capabilities and release schedules as Intel or AMD. I guess Id call it semi successful, get out of one market, and into a new one, and time will tell if this was truely a success.

  2. I like the new slogan on Intel's New Slogan Clarified · · Score: 1

The new slogan makes sense as Intel has set themselves up to leapfrog AMD. This combined with the new Apple/Intel relationship is going to be huge. I think both sides are going to benefit from this arrangement and I am excited to see their collaborative efforts. I think both companies will play a huge role in the roll out of wireless mobile devices. AMD is fine for todays computing needs, but Intel might be the way to go for tommorrow.

  3. Re:And that's not all... on 'Intel Inside' No More · · Score: 1

Actually this naming convention sounds fine. How many people actually know what Athlon is? Turion anyone?? Sounds like its straight out of a Star Trek convention. These names are just short of saying Intel Dual Core... and Intel single core. I think this is easy enough for people to understand. It certainly makes alot more sense than the name Pentium. I also think that they don't need to worry about naming the 4 core processors for quite some time although Quadro Core sounds pretty cool!

  5. Java fast? on Ruby Off the Rails · · Score: 1

I know this is a bit a of a flame, but Java is anything but fast. I've seen too many bloated Java app servers to know of its 'speed'. If you have fast box and gobbs of memory, then Java runs adequately. Im sure Ruby is not a speed burning language either, but I would accept the tradeoff of easier and quicker development. I would like to see some examples of some larger scale Ruby web apps however.

  6. Re:Linksys is ruining their reputation on Linksys Adds Linux WRT54G Model Back · · Score: 1

There is definitely something wrong with the "new" WRT54G, version 5. When I surf the web, website load very slowly, almost like dialup. I have the same issues you just mentioned and have tried for several weeks to fix it. I've changed MTU settings, changed ports, read every support problem on the Linksys website. I'm surprised that *any* of these version 5 routers work at all!

Interesting, I have the same slow loading issues with the version 5 router I just purchased. My old Netgear 8 port router runs circles around this thing. I think I will call Linksys for a version 4 router as well!

  9. Lets all be honest... on How The 360 Works · · Score: 1

At the end of the day, all of this talk about threads in these processors will be a wash. In fact, I'll bet that most titles won't take advantage of it. Developers will find this to be a real pita to program and will cost them a good amount of time and money. It all sounds great in theory, but thats just theory. At the end of the day, people will realize that these machines are not super computers and their benefits will be outweighed by their cost.

  10. Make sure you have a Nintendo DS on How Not To Buy Crap Games This Season · · Score: 1

  11. Moron on Epic's Mark Rein Expounds On The Revolution · · Score: 1

When Nintendo said this industry was in a glut, I didn't really beleive it, until now. The only other thing I can think of is this guy is very insecure. To say gaming is diven completely with graphics is bologna. I think he is bashing Nintendo only because he sees them as a threat. My opinion is that 1) The revolution controller will work as described, 2) The system will not be underpowered (Without all the HDTV at those widescreen resolutions, Im sure it will be much easier to keep up the frame rates at the lower resolutions), 3) It will be more affordable than any of the systems, 4) The games will be among the very best, 5) Nintendo will find great success when its games finally go 'Online'.

  12. PSP is a clear disappointment. on PSP Hits 10 Million Units · · Score: 1

I think the PSP is clearly a disappointment based on several factors. The PSP was supposed to dethrone Nintendo in the handheld gaming market. The PSP was supposed to dethrone Apple in the poratable music player market. And the PSP was supposed to dethrone portable dvd players in the portable movie player market. Sony had big expectations with the PSP.

  13. NFL and Apple on ABC Affiliates Grapple With TV-Show Downloads · · Score: 1

Now I wish the NFL & Apple would partner up to download games. It still would be better to have real time like direct TV, but I would download the game after it is over, just so I can see my favorite team play. I hope the NFL reads slashdot!

  14. I never liked handheld gaming until... on The Gameboy Micro Reviewed · · Score: 1

There may be some people like myself, but I have a Gameboy Advance SP and a few games, played it honestly for a few months but never really became much of a handheld gamer. Mt GBA collected dust for a few months. I then gave things another shot and bought a Nintendo DS. Surprisingly, this is the only thing I play these days. It is so much more different, which I think is why it struck a chord with me. I play my DS so much more, although I think the micro looks really cool, I highly recommend a DS. I guess the main key here is size. If you just are looking for something small, the micro is for you. If you want a unique experience (which I think is truely unparalled), buy a DS.

  17. Revolution on Next-Gen Gamer Habits Profiled · · Score: 1

I know where I'll be putting my money. After the success of the Nintendo DS, I will definitely buy Nintendo's next gen console. It will most likely be the best value for any system. I want it to be something totally different and unique as compared to the PS3 or Xbox 360. I really think Nintendo has it all right this time around.

  18. Low Power on S3 Graphics Comes out of Hiding with Chrome20 · · Score: 1

I think possibly the real benefit here is the low power consumption. If they can incorporate this chip in laptops, I think it would be a good move for S3. Laptops have already begun outselling desktops this past year. If this trend continues, low power solutions are going to become the norm. Just look at the Apple/Intel deal and it is all about performance per watt. If most people are buying laptops, this means the majority of people do not buy high end video cards for their pcs.

I don't own a Mac at all and never have owned one. Until the past year or so I bought an iPod, and use iTunes on my Windows PC. I have been thinking about getting a Mac, mainly because of my dislike for Windows, but now Id rather wait until they have Intel based Mac laptops. The G5s I have read are pretty good, but still I want to buy a "new" machine and the G5s are not available in a laptop. Call me crazy, but Im looking forward to the Intel Mac and will probably buy one because they are using Intel inside. Maybe I am in the minority, I don't know.

  22. Re:Trouble in Techland on IBM-Sony-Toshiba Reveal New Cell Processor Details · · Score: 1

Remember this is IBM we are dealing with here. People who deal with IBM know what I am talking about. Most likely they will feed you with all these "apples to oranges" comparisons, with no comparison to other processors because its so different. While their chip might be a technological marvel, it might not work very well in many other situations. It will be very difficult for IBM to outpace future Intel/AMD chipsets in terms of price and performance. I think "different" is a better term for this chip than "revolutionary". I would stay away from this chipset for anything else other than a PS3.

  23. Arcade Football Game on Only NFL Game This Year Gets Lukewarm Response · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think it would be cool to avoid this whole mess and create a better arcade style football game. A game like this could take some cues from Sega Soccer Slam as an example. Or someone could develop a great football game for the Nintendo DS. Drawing up you own plays would be fun to do with a stylus. I think the possibilities are out there, its just no developers want to take the risk.
