  2. incentive to cooperate as well on Why Japan Gets the Cool Stuff · · Score: 2

The Japanease government provides a considerable assitance and incentive for their companies to cooperate as well. Such a proposition is unheard of in the US, where much effort is spent ensuring systems DON'T inter-operate, all in the name of profit. SMS is a prime example, in Europe or Japan, you can cross systems seamlessly, such a simplistic seeming idea would take an act of god here.

LOL and there is a recoverable cost which CAN IN FACT be successfully sued for I KNOW, I DID IT in Contra Costa County(Calif) Small claims court. I was called twice by the same telemerketer with a 2 month period. I took them to small claims court to recover the loss, they never showed, I got a day off work (payed) the cost of a months' cell bill, and written assurance that my name and phone number had been removed. You may not like it but thats the way it is :)

you got a point, there is a huge usage difference between europe, japan and the us. It is probably due to the lack of interoperability between systems here. I can't send an sms message to anyone, only those on my system. There is no incentive for the companies to cooperate :(

they are called excel and directX. Work requires these heinously complex excell workbooks that every other office suite I've ever used has failed to render correctly. That is probably M$'s fault and not the other office suite but I have no choice in that matter. The directX part is because I like to game, I like to play new games, not wait for a port to be coded. I like to play online games when they are still popular. While Linux is begginning to see some games it may be a while before Grand Theft Auto 3 runs, or say Soldier of Fortune 2. I'd LOVE to be able to do away with M$ is lieu of Linux, but it has got to fill all my needs first of all.
